Goodnet – A Gateway to Doing Good, is a media platform that aims to help you activate your goodness. Connecting between people, organizations and initiatives, Goodnet offers everyone a direct path to finding the opportunity that best suits them for doing good.

In 2007, Businesswoman and philanthropist Shari Arison, owner of the Arison Group, initiated Good Deeds Day; the main idea behind the initiative was that each of us can do something good to help/benefit others. Shari’s wish was to inspire people to make a commitment to do good.  The first gathering in 2007 was organized by Ruach Tova (NGO), the philanthropic arm of the Arison Group, and part of The Ted Arison Family Foundation. Since that first gathering of 7,000 committed souls, it has become a huge success as people around the world (50 nations in 2012) continue to sign up to perform acts of kindness towards others in their communities. To encourage greater participation, Shari and her team also created the website Goodnet, to provide participants with a portal to help them gather and connect with others interested in activities that exemplify doing good.

Recently, I came across Shari Arison’s organization on Facebook and when I found out that March 10 was the designated date for International Good Deeds Day, I signed on. When you join in, you are guided to a page to fill out a form with data and make a pledge to perform specific actions. Your created profile with your name and location is then added to a huge Participant board or pledge page showcasing many others active members. They even offer a toolkit to help you create an activity/event for the day. For this assignment, I pledged to send out daily virtual hugs: Here’s one {{{HUGS}}}  for you! However, you can pledge anything that tickles your fancy and it’s never too late to join. More below!

“Good Deeds Day has become the leading day of giving and this year individuals, school children, students, soldiers and employees from many businesses are joining in for the 7th annual Good Deeds Day with the aim of doing a good deed for others,”  Shari Arison

365 Days of Hugs

This year,  in preparation for Good Deeds Day on the 10th, NYC was designated as the venue for groups of organizations that gathered on Saturday the 9th to display and share information on how they were doing good in the world. In addition to the toolkit, another way to get ideas about what we could do to make a difference in the world is to read Shari’s book: “Activate Your Goodness” which is choc a bloc with invaluable information to keep us busy while staying  informed about the initiative.  Don’t worry if you missed this year’s celebrations. You can still sign up in preparation for Good Deeds Day 2014 which will be on March 9, 2014. Hope to hear your story between now and then!  Would you join in next year? What activities would you pledge to perform?

*Please bear with me as I continue to catch up on your blogs and commenting… Thank you all for your patience!

Positive Motivation Tip: Every day is an opportunity to do good. Celebrate Good Deeds Day today and every day you perform an act of goodwill.

Thanks for sharing. Without good deeds our communities and those living in them would suffer indeed.

      • 21/03/2013 2:47 pm

I’m good but tired of winter. It has been dragging on here and is cold. We are heading out to Montana next Saturday for a week family ski trip! I can hardly wait. WE have never really done a family vacation that wasn’t too my parents or in-laws or in Minnesota so this should be really special. 🙂

    • 05/04/2013 8:39 am

I know it’s well after the fact, but I bet you had a wonderful time away…. Glad to stay connected. 🙂

  11. 14/03/2013 4:41 pm

Every day should be Good Deeds Day, shouldn’t it? I wish I’d had time to read this back then and I would have signed up. And {{{HUGS}}} right back atcha. 🙂

    • 21/03/2013 6:38 am

Yes, it should be… I agree. But everything helps. 🙂

  12. 14/03/2013 5:47 pm

The idea behind Goodnet is wonderful and I really love the first quote by Shari Arison. Yes, we should use every day to do something good. 🙂 Hugs back!

TY Munchow! It drew me in from the start and I admire the fact that Shari took it to another level by creating a movement around doing good. 🙂

I’d never heard of her so I’m grateful for the introduction. Isn’t she so right. Her message should be listened to everywhere

    • 05/04/2013 8:42 am

      True… Definitely a positive influence. 😉

  14. 16/03/2013 2:22 pm

I wonder if we made a difference? Did you feel good won March 10th?

    • 05/04/2013 8:43 am

Hi Jacqui, I bet we did in our own way. Even a single act of goodwill reverberates… I’ve always believed it. 🙂

  15. 18/03/2013 11:58 am

Great idea. This is worth duplicating every day of every year. 365 days of good deeds!

    • 05/04/2013 8:47 am

Exactly… That’s the good thing about holding reminder events like this one. We can do good in our own way.

  16. 19/03/2013 2:44 pm

That’s a wonderful initiative! Thanks for sharing!
    Hugs!

Despite of the many evil and pain in the world, we should never give up in pursuing what is good. “I believe that if people will think good, speak good and do good, the circles of good will grow and our world will be a better one.” I hope and pray for this to happen, especially with the new generation and the ones to follow. Great post.

    • 05/04/2013 6:43 pm

TY IT! That is so true and I’m with you on the need for us all to wish each other well and live and let live…. Love to your family. 🙂

  18. 16/04/2013 1:21 am

So true, do good to others, and the good comes back to you… And yes, let’s pledge to make every day a good deeds day… Thanks for motivating… 🙂

I always believe that life is an echo. Whatever you give life will give it abck to you. So if you do good, good things will come to you too. Anyway, Good Deed day celebration is a great idea. I hope we can also do this in the Philippines and we can start in schools. This will surely encourage people to do good without expecting in return.

What a lovely idea, I do a random act of kindness every week but I like the idea of 365 days of virtual hugs. We could all do with hugs, it is something we all crave x
