To people around the world, the 14th Dalai Lama is an important religious leader and teacher in the Buddhist tradition. He is a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, a great humanitarian, philosopher and advocate for the path of universal responsibility, peace and compassion. We see his charismatic side even as he gives somber talks about the growing global crises or speaks about the urgency for global peace. Yet, there is another side to him; a humble, unassuming, playful side. He is a spiritual master who radiates a scintillating energy that pulls you in and steadies you, silencing the noise and cocooning you in a blanket of peace. In his presence, all petty thoughts drop away, time is suspended, and we are reminded of our collective, energetic human bond. Such is the power of his presence.

Recently, I saw the wonderful film, Road To Peace: Ancient Wisdom Of the Dalai Lama of Tibet about the beloved 14th Dalai Lama produced by Leon Stuparich. 15 years ago, Leon turned his focus on the Dalai Lama. He wanted to know more about the man behind the myth; about his incredible presence, and how to achieve happiness and a “more centered, peaceful life.” The film, which you may watch for free via the link above, takes us on a personal and up close journey with the Dalai Lama.
During the course of the film, the Dalai Lama answers an important question: How can we apply universal responsibility in our lives? His advice and wisdom which he gives liberally, and which I’ve included in my block quotes above and below, are gems to mull over again and again. I call them his gems on the road to peace. Leon’s goal is to expose as many people as possible to the Dalai Lama’s teaching and peace efforts. As the manifestation of the Buddha compassion, he promotes human values, religious harmony and freedom. What struck me first about the Dalia Lama is his humility and capacity to make everyone feel valued in his presence. He is also the voice of conscience when he reminds us that our planet is in crisis, and we can’t continue treating each other and the earth with reckless abandon. Another facet of his personality I admire is his persistence in exhorting all of us to do our part, to use our knowledge and inner strength to make the world a sustainable and happier planet. This is one of the most important men living today. Such wisdom is hard to acquire, but he is constantly studying. I have met him twice in Sweden and my children went to his house in Dharamsala, India. I admire him immensely. It’s not that you have to be religious, it’s to know yourself and to know the world, the human being. He is so simple and straightforward in that humble way Tibetans have.
When I visited the Pothala palace in Tibet and talked to people who revered him and loved him but were not allowed to even have a picture of him – my heart ached so much that I constantly cried. I met people who could tell about horrible and atrocious things done to them by their opressors.
That was the most beautiful but also the most heartbreaking journey. To know that I can never stay in contact with these wonderful people, that I can never see them again – is very painful. For a very long time after I had come home again, I could not even speak about what I had learned.
This people, the Tibetans, are strong. I am convinced that in their hearts they will never be conquered.
Thank you sharing your beautiful memories of the Dalai Lama. I think you should write a post about it for your blog, as you shared such wonderful insights above. The Tibetans are a remarkable people and the Dalai Lama will make sure we never forget. 🙂
I too have been very inspired by the Dalai Lama. I read a great book on his life and he has done so much to inspire people. I hope Tibet gets their home back someday. 🙂
