Reflections: You Yourself Must Change It…

Reflections: You Yourself Must Change It…

Dreams Before Waking by Adrienne Rich
What would it mean to live
in a city whose people were changing
each other’s despair into hope?-
You yourself must change it.-
What would it feel like to know
your country was changing?-
You yourself must change it.-
Though your life felt arduous
new and unmapped and strange
what would it mean to stand on the first
page of the end of despair? (An excerpt)

ACT: To stand on the first page of the end of despair takes courage. But even more so, it takes persistent action. Working for the common good; helping the down and out, supporting causes that matter, showing simple kindness on the street, acknowledging others, takes commitment. We can sit back and let others do it or we can contribute to change the despair into hope… even in the smallest way. Thank You to my top five commentators for 2012: Bree, Frizztext, Tilly Bud, Granbee and Three Well Beings  and thank you all who supported this blog (proper thanks in future post). More below!

Fun-Facts About New Year Resolutions via happywink.org
Here are some fun facts related to New Year as observed in America:
About 40 to 45% of American adults make one or more New Year’s resolutions each year.
Most popular resolutions include promises of weight loss, exercise and quitting smoking.
Also common are resolutions dealing with better money management / debt reduction.
The following statistics reveal how many of these resolutions are maintained as time goes on:
Past the first week: 75%
Past 2 weeks: 71%
After one month: 64%
After 6 months: 46%
About 67% of people make three or more resolutions.

ACT: It is never too late to act. Resolutions fail because of plans that are not followed or a lack of action. We give us quickly because we mess up… Don’t. Messing up is part of life and giving up solidifies the mess. Stay fluid and keep working that plan. Fall down, stand back up, tweak the plan, change the plan, rename it, don’t game it, don’t despair. ACT. What are you doing to keep your change plan alive? Do you struggle with it? Do share! Have an inspired day! Thank you. 🙂

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Daily Prompt: Resolved Have you ever made a New Year’s Resolution that you kept?
Positive Motivation Tip: We can change our plans as often as we wish. The key is to ACT.

hi Eliz, I’m proud to be one of your top five commentators for 2012 – and for sure I like to follow your articles 2013!

    • 04/01/2013 1:34 pm

I noticed I’m on your list too… That is what I call reciprocity! TY Frizztext… it’s all good. 🙂

  2. 04/01/2013 9:44 am

    Very well written… 🙂

    • 04/01/2013 1:35 pm

TY! Glad to read that you appreciate it. 🙂

  3. 04/01/2013 12:41 pm

Adjusting to change is one of the most important qualities these days. We have a HUGE action plan for this year. A little nervous, but we WILL act! Wish us luck!!

  4. 04/01/2013 1:38 pm

My resolutions are still hanging in there – 4 days of not biting my nails, and doing 10 minutes of meditation a day. 4 whole days! Yay me!

  5. 04/01/2013 2:18 pm

I’m working on the old house today and that is my ‘change’ for 2013! A big change for the better 😉

    • 04/01/2013 2:34 pm

Good for you… I’m evaluating how I manage my time and to put myself on a much needed internet rein. 2012 was challenging and even though my blog grew exponentially in every way, I have to become purposeful and finish my offline writings. 🙂

  6. 04/01/2013 4:41 pm

The first few days of 2013 have been full of action, Eliz. I just want to make sure I keep it up. I don’t want to be part of that 34% that drops off after the first month.
    Thanks for the inspiration.

    • 04/01/2013 10:30 pm

Pace yourself, stay focused on your goals and, as they say in Hollywood, don’t believe the hype or everything you hear! 😆 TY too!

      • 04/01/2013 11:08 pm

        Hi Elizabeth

You’re welcome and I look forward to “seeing” you soon.

  8. 04/01/2013 7:48 pm

I keep my resolution a secret. I might talk about goals but to resolve something takes a lot of thought process and preparation.

    • 08/01/2013 8:34 pm

True… My writing is about goals and some call them resolutions but I like the goal idea so we can keep it real TY! 😉

  9. 04/01/2013 8:26 pm

Inspiration abounds today as I go about my award nomination notices 🙂 I’ve been close to throwing in the towel. But, think I’ll keep plugging away at my plan. In the meantime, you can find your award here: http://wp.me/p2LjRv-cc

I can’t remember making New Years resolutions for myself. I am a big creator of inspirations to keep rolling, like a wheel moving forward without a beginning and an end. I believe in this approach to goals because when you begin there are things that are not anticipated and so changes have to be made to keep inspired to complete your goals. Well, I guess, I resolve to keep rolling 🙂

    • 08/01/2013 8:40 pm

That’s good enough… keep on rolling! 😆 The idea of goals is to help us re-frame our vision and open our hearts for new things to happen. I don’t write resolutions because I believe we should do it or skip it… TY! ::-)

  11. 04/01/2013 9:41 pm

I have a whole list of new intentions that require more focus and some follow-through! I’m counting on you to help keep me motivated! 🙂 oxo

    • 08/01/2013 8:42 pm

Oh, oh! Debra … I’m counting on you too. So we’ll give each other the push we need. TY! 🙂

  12. 05/01/2013 1:23 am

I’m tackling things on a small scale so I don’t lose <3 maybe be small but just as important I guess . Thanks Eliz 🙂

    • 08/01/2013 8:42 pm

Small is great… like the ants, we build on small to complete the goal… I like it. 🙂

  13. 05/01/2013 2:21 am

Another great quote to open the post!

    How do you find them?

    • 08/01/2013 8:44 pm

Great question… Grace, Serendipity, Muse… God… I believe that covers it… no credit taken. TY! 🙂

  14. 05/01/2013 2:11 pm

I so believe that we put too much on is when making resolutions…I have kept one I made last year…water aerobics 2-3 times a week…I have succeeded…because my goals were attainable…and something I like to do…now I’ll have to find a way to complete another goal…because that is what I call resolutions …goals…

    • 08/01/2013 9:12 pm

Good for you and so it is… Sometimes it’s best not to announce them so it won’t be held against you… TY! 🙂

  15. 05/01/2013 5:09 pm

We change all the time and the world around us changes all the time too. Thanks, Eliz, for all the quotes and pictures about change. As a 78 year old I have to accept certain changes that come with aging. I know there are more changes to come if I have the good fortune to live for a few more years. Do some exercises, yes, try to eat healthy food, yes, but still I won’t be able to keep up with a younger person. I plan on enjoying life as much as possible with deteriorating body functions due to aging.

    • 08/01/2013 9:14 pm

Good for you and we are all dying a little every day… TY for sharing so honestly that reality which sooner or later becomes our collective experience. 🙂

  16. 06/01/2013 5:01 am

I’d like to see myself to continue to understand more and accept people, culture, the world, and make change accordingly.

    • 08/01/2013 9:22 pm

Great idea… and pray you do, and that we all do too. 🙂 TY!

  17. 06/01/2013 4:25 pm

    So far so good 🙂

  18. 06/01/2013 6:43 pm

I never really, actually had a New Year’s resolution. Perhaps the one I had is not making any resolution. I try to act as a good citizen no matter what. I don’t have to write it down, or make any promises.

    • 08/01/2013 10:25 pm

That works too… Too many make leaps that are hard to keep up and that is where the danger lies… Frankly, just “showing up” is not a bad resolution to make.TY! 🙂

  19. 06/01/2013 11:13 pm

I’m more into action than resolutions. Show me the money…

  20. 07/01/2013 8:42 pm

Acting on those resolutions is one key – persistence in pursuit, I guess, is the other… Thanks for sharing those interesting stats on holding true. Your first quote is one I think of often in the context of other things close to my heart. xo

    • 08/01/2013 10:28 pm

      I hear you… TY for checking in despite your hectic schedule.. {{{HUGS}}}

  21. 07/01/2013 11:09 pm

I do love Adrienne Rich’s work. My favourite…

“When those who have the power to name and to socially construct reality choose not to see you or hear you, whether you are dark-skinned, old, disabled, female, or speak with a different accent or dialect than theirs, when someone with the authority of a teacher, say, describes the world and you are not in it, there is a moment of psychic disequilibrium, as if you looked into a mirror and saw nothing.”

    • 08/01/2013 10:52 pm

Quite powerful and raw… I loved her writings and will miss her. She died last year… A major loss to the world. TY!
