On Blogging: Are Pingbacks A Pesky Problem…?
Happy Holidays to All! It’s a pity to address this subject just before Christmas but, on second thoughts, it is not. What is a Pingback? Pingbacks are, as WP.com aptly put it, remote comments; a key way of linking and acknowledging similar posts by fellow bloggers. They are not useless, spammy comments meant to irritate the recipient, but another way to give a shout-out to a blogger. This link to WordPress.org gives more information on the distinction between spam and pingbacks. When a fellow WordPress blogger – Blogger A – sends a pingback, the primary purpose is to notify us that a similar post has been created and our post compliments it. The final decision to acknowledge or reject the pingback rests with Blogger B; no quibbles, no acrimony.
All pingbacks are not created equal; some are like weak pingball players and others like Rambo, so discretion is advised. If a pingback is on an unrelated topic, the easiest solution is to delete it. Sure, there are other important concerns we might have about spoof pingbacks and denial of service attacks, and those issues are reminders why we must be vigilant about the pingbacks we send and receive. Plus, Akismet does a fine job of helping us separate the wheat from the chaff.
In the four years I’ve been blogging on this platform, we have been blessed with an impressive selection of support tools and features; themes, Publicize, Likes, pingbacks, reblogs, mobile apps, Zemanta and more. All are meant to help us connect, communicate, and enhance our exchanges in our blogging community. Back in the days before we could send pingbacks via Zemanta and the Daily Post, we would write a post, then scour the internet looking for related topics. Now we have the ease of referencing other posts with a click and a copy. Is that a problem? I think not but, in fairness to those who object to pingbacks, there are common courtesies or a blogging etiquette we can observe with this practice.

For starters, don’t send random pingbacks and be careful to avoid passing on spoof pingbacks. Next, it is rude to send a pingback and not visit the blog in question. I rarely send a pingback without checking out the post first. I visit the blog I’m reaching out to and read the post… even if it takes me several days to visit. Visit the blog and read the post. I do that for all my pingbacks; including those from the photo challenge. When I do the photo challenges, not only do I visit and Like or Like/Comment on ALL the blogs I mention, I do same for other participants of the challenge.
Visit, read, and acknowledge the other blogger with a Like or a comment or both. The point of the pingback is to connect us with each other and keep the community connections and conversations growing. While it makes no sense to use a pingback when a post has nothing in common to offer, it is a helpful, productive tool, and I’ve never viewed it as something used to manipulate others. When in doubt, delete. Does it bring us more traffic? More below!

Does it bring us more traffic? A pingback sent to the Daily Post page, and/or blogs generated by Zemanta, exposes our blog to others and produces some traffic. When we ping other blogs and share our posts with our social media connections or, better yet, with authoritative sites, we get some traffic too. But overall, I can tell you that when I look at my daily traffic on the days of the challenge, it is definitely not massively increased by pingbacks sent to fellow bloggers. Also, a pingback doesn’t steal your traffic or expose your blog to voodoo priests; It’s a simple hello, so there’s no need to question the veracity of the sender. Our pingbacks/trackbacks are “no follow” which means that you don’t lose any traffic juice or hits. Traffic building is both effort and organic anyway… I’ll address that in another post.
I thought you’d find this interesting: Of the pingbacks I send from my photo challenge posts, a good percentage of those folk don’t reciprocate. When I’ve gotten lots of feedback, it has come from my visiting and supporting lots of other blogs participating in the challenge. Some bloggers think pinging is black magic, but think of it this way: When you add 95 related posts from the Daily Post page to your photo challenge post and hit publish, maybe 40 of those folk show up and the rest might/might not trickle in over the next few days. The rest of your traffic must come from other venues, and the effort you make to expose your blog to friends, family, subscribers and through social media connections, will make a difference. A pingback from a fellow blogger might annoy you, but it is neither spam nor a pesky problem… Go ahead, share some blog love this season. Remember, you are in control, and can always hit delete! I have disabled ping backs for many blog articles mainly because for me, ping backs comes as a comment. On daily post, I have seen pingbacks and track backs beautifully arranged as a separate section! But, in my blog, it comes mixed up with the comments, that too as big links! Is there anyway to get pingbacks as a separate section ? If it is theme specific, I don’t want to change my theme and the designs!!!
I believe they might be theme specific but it’s worth looking at your backroom admin page to see if options are available. Personally, I don’t mind them from fellow bloggers but I’m careful to check the source too. TY and Happy Holidays Shibin!

I don’t think you did but if yes, I trust you sent a link to a related post… You have to either copy and add a link or activate Zemanta and use their recommended posts in order to create a pingback.

It’s fine Julie. We learn from doing… As a newbie, I was the same way and I took workshops, read up on it a lot and learned from established bloggers what to do and not to do. When I started, we didn’t have the fantastic Daily Post community we have now, so it was harder to make connections and I spent more time on my blogger blog (which I need to revive in 2013). WP offers us so much that I think we have taken it for granted and that can lead to such confusions too.

I usually approve pingbacks unles it’s obvious spam and nothing to do with the post being pinged. And I do use them to direct readers to other bloggers’ posts that are relavant. Pingbacks are A-OK with me!

My post today was full of pingbacks to the many bloggers who have been very supportive of my journey. I only hope they appreciate the message for how it was intended.
I hope so too… Thankfully, I haven’t read anywhere about complaints on Blogging Award pingbacks. I can understand the concerns people have; especially when a pingback is sent and no follow through occurs. We all forget, but the civil thing to do is follow through with a LIKE or a comment or both.

I’ primarily use Zemanta pingbacks, and don’t really understand how to do any other kind. (will have to educate myself I suppose!) However, i LOVE getting pingbacks which arrive as comments in my blog.
So people don;t like pingbacks??!!??? I seriously had no idea!!!!
I use both Zemanta and copy/paste to showcase blog posts that fit the subject I’ve written about. In fairness to the complaints, what I take from them is that some bloggers see it as a random traffic baiting tactic. There are far more insidious ways to do that… but, when we visit and leave comments or likes on a blog, we introduce ourselves and our blogs to the other person. They can respond or not and that’s it. We can read anything we want into the visit but the fact remains that a fellow blogger visited and supported you. My position is: How about we start from that premise? TY! 🙂

Thanks for including my post in your related articles. I appreciate it. I think some bloggers don’t realize that you have to link to a specific blog post page in order to generate a pingback. Linking to the blog’s home page alone won’t do it. I always feel bad if I miss a mention on someone’s blog because I didn’t get a pingback. 🙂

TY Petchary, Yes, Zemanta is the easy way to get recommended posts on your blog and it needs to be activated on your blog. Sometimes I add a post myself if I’m not happy with the recommended ones.

great post which helps others understand the way pingbacks work. i have also noticed that sometimes a pingback does not find its way back.. like today, a post made by hugh cutler likes back to one of my posts, but there’s no notice. i think sometimes it’s at the whim of the pingback fairies!

Thanks for the thoughtful commentary about a concrete yet illusive subject. I have mixed opinions about them. Sometimes I delete them. More often than not I thank the sender and visit their blog. Mostly, I receive them during WP Weekly Photo Challenge. Since I have not dived into other social media, the Pingback is another way (as you said, within my control) to maybe broaden my base and meet others that I would not. I don’t mind ping backs, mostly they are from bloggers who are using them well. I also figure that my readers can spot a person who is just there for the traffic generation. I don’t care for folks who do that, but I try not to be too judgmental either. I personally don’t put them in other people’s blogs, that’s just my own preference.
Ping-backs are really a win win when used effectively. Frankly, unless they are sent to what is known as an authoritative site, they don’t generate that much traffic… but they are a great way to make new friends in the blogosphere. Zemanta is a helpful tool for recommending ideal ping-backs and it’s a good practice to send and receive some ping-backs… TY for your feedback! 🙂

As always, you provide great content on relevant issues. 🙂 I do use pingbacks on my posts as a service to my readers…listing a few other blogs where articles of similar interest might be found. I must admit that because of time crunchiness, I don’t always visit the blog I have linked…but after reading your post, I realize that it is good manners and good blogging etiquette to do so. 🙂 Normally, I link with bloggers I know and I NEVER pingback with anything questionable. 🙂 And I don’t put my own link in my comment on other people’s posts, except in unusual circumstances…or a trackback to my blog…I didn’t know that was acceptable.:)

I love pingbacks, Eliz. I especially like finding other blogs using Zemanta. It is all about making connections, so the more tools the better. Like you said, if it annoys someone they can just delete it, but that should not prevent the rest of us from tapping someone on the shoulder and saying, “Hey, we have something in common.”

I read your article but I am still totally cluesless about PingPong. I’ve experimented it on myself using my own post and I received a notification form Seeker to Seeker. HuH? I laughed at your pingpong line which by now, I know is your sense of humor at play! 😆 It’s a pingback and you can use them on your own posts to connect related posts on your blog too. 🙂 You can accept the notification, check out the origin, make a new blog friend, and move on to the next notice. They are harmless and make us build wonderful connections with others… 🙂

Great reminders and advice, Eliz. Although, I think you are more talking in line with managing Related Posts, which pings are only coinciding with. I rarely get pinged from Related Posts. But when I do I sure click to find its legitimacy.

TY Rommel I started with ping-backs because it seemed to be a concern for some fellow bloggers but, I imagine if they have concerns about it, they’d probably feel the same way about a trackback or any link-back. I’m glad I addressed it to clear the myth. TY! 🙂
I always enjoy blogging tips and information from you knowing it comes from a reliable source and an experienced blogger. Checking on every pingback makes sense. I always read before using a pingback and, I go over to check if someone pings me. That sounds funny…getting pinged. haha. 🙂
Anyway, you have a wonderful Christmas and I would say “chill” but I fear, you, are bionic and that word does not exist in your world. Lol! Blessings! 🙂

Well being incredibly daft I don’t quite get pingbacks. At times I include a link to someone’s blog in the body of a post, e.g. when that blog has inspired me or some such. But then I see myself in a list at the end of someone’s post, like the weekly photo challenge, and I don’t know how to go about returning the favour. Am I supposed to go back to mine and add a list at the bottom?
You are not daft at all Gilly. The link you send inside a post with a mention of what the other person said that caught your attention is a trackback. The recommendations from Zemanta and the copy and paste from the Daily Post photo challenge that we add to our blogs are ping-backs. You don’t have to create a pingback list unless you want to. The list for the weekly challenge usually comes from the submissions people make – they are trackbacks to the DP photo challenge – but they become ping-backs when I use them at the bottom of my page… Is this helping? We can add them to our blog if we want to or not. TY! 🙂

I think my attitude is similar to yours. I also use Zemanta and I always read the article before I actually add it to the bottom of my articles. I try to choose articles that either compliment what I am saying or offer an alternative viewpoint.
I don’t actually receive a lot of pingbacks myself, although I have noticed an increase in the use of pingbacks by spammers and I agree totally – BE CAREFUL! I monitor for spam very closely.
If someone pings me I always pay them a visit.
