Reflections: Be The Change…

18/11/2012

There is no delight in owning anything unshared. Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Reflections: Be The Change… Share

“Sometimes we hold on to our possessions because we fear we might run out – life seems scarce. But when we believe that giving is the way to live, we will produce more in the future – life seems abundant.” John C. Maxwell

When I first read the WP prompt on what change I would love my blog to make in the world, it took me back to my earliest blogging days in 2008. I started with clear goals to connect and contribute to the ever-growing online community of bloggers and social media fans. But the larger goal was to share a motivational insight and/or a nugget of inspiration to cheer others on. I have not lost sight of those goals at all although, over the years, I have ramped down on certain aspects of social media. Something I remain passionate about is my belief that we all want to be heard, appreciated and respected. Blogging is about community building and paramount to that belief is the support we give each other. As most of us know, supporting and staying abreast of all the blogs we read takes enormous work and so, an attitude of gratitude towards others who support us is key. I appreciate everyone who visits my blog and one thing I want to remain is grateful for the kindness and feedback.

“I want to give like I have plenty. I want to love like I’m not afraid” Chris Tomlin

Reflections: Be The Change… Be considerate

A pen is a powerful tool, and the way we use it can help or hurt others, so consideration is always important… Lately, I’ve read some posts questioning the motives of fellow bloggers who visit to like/comment on blogs. When a fellow blogger likes and/or comments on a post, instead of second-guessing their motives, let’s stop and consider that they took a moment out of their schedule to drop in and acknowledge our writing; then reciprocate with delight and a positive mindset. We can take it further and give generously by liking and supporting other bloggers new to us; not only our blog buddies. If you’ve ever given to others freely and with an abundant spirit, you’d know the joy the spirit feels. I’m always happy to encourage/support other bloggers; even as I struggle to stay on top of it too. Why? Because there is grace in supporting and helping others grow; we don’t achieve success by sitting alone in an ivory tower. We gain nothing from withholding our Likes and comments from other bloggers. We can be the change we wish for the world, by opening our palms and showering others with the same goodwill we wish for ourselves. Try it!

More below.

“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” Mother Teresa

Reflections: Be The Change… Be Charitable

As the saying goes, charity begins with us. When my fellow bloggers like or comment on my blog, I’m grateful for it and make the effort to reciprocate with a grateful, loving heart. It matters less to me to psychoanalyze why/how quickly/how slowly they respond to my post. It means more to me that a fellow blogger took the time to stop by and like and/or comment on my post and I will always appreciate the gesture. To reiterate a point from my earlier paragraph, blogging is about building community and making connections; some stay and some leave.  I use the Like button as an expression of the abundance/generosity I see and hope to see in the world, and I see no point in withholding it. Every Friday, I look forward to the photo challenge because I get to spend the next 4-5 days visiting hundreds of posts and enjoying the creative submissions of others. I Like all of them and comment on several… I give it freely and joyfully and life goes on. WE can all do our bit and it cost nothing but the time we commit to it. 🙂

Have a playful, restful Thanksgiving week ahead!
What are your thoughts? What do you do to support your fellow bloggers not just your buddies? Do you struggle with it? Do share! Thank you. 🙂

*Please bear with me as I catch up on your blogs and commenting… Thank you all for your patience! 🙂

Totally agree with that “there is no delight in owning anything unshared” – it is the same with egoists who think that they can’t use the community for any good – how much fun is it just to be an egotist all alone without any to be selfish against …? ‘hahaha’

I do agree that you have definitely achieved your goal with your blog posts. Of course blogging is a community, otherwise what would be the point? It would be no fun blogging in isolation. Like you, I firmly believe in supporting fellow bloggers with comments and “likes.” I also like to support them by posting links to their blog posts at the end of mine if it is relevant; and by quoting little bits from their posts inside my post. Or re-blogging. I have done some of that too, especially with other Jamaican bloggers who have a view on a topic I have also discussed. That’s a good way to support! Keep up the great work! You are on the right track.

TY Petchary! See, I’m behind even with your blog… I’ll be there soon. Thanks for the additional things you mentioned. Yes, they are all important to the whole and even if we do a few at a time, it helps. I am a work in progress and my goals remain as I work to achieve them… I’m not quite there. 🙂

Eliz…you were my first blogger ‘friend’…I was fortunate indeed to connect with you early on in my blogging journey because I could not have had a better blogging role model. You are kind and generous and caring and thoughtful…and your posts are a delicious combination of amazing photography and inspiring words.
What is my blogging challenge? Finding the time to blog AND read and comment on the many wonderful blogs I follow forces me to steal time that should be devoted to sleeping…but I believe that I am a better person for being part of the blogging community. 🙂
May your Thanksgiving be filled with friends, family and love. 🙂

    • 21/11/2012 8:52 am

May your Thanksgiving be bright, blessed and abundant too! Yes, we go back to the day when it was just you and Barbara commenting… I suspect that some bloggers were spoiled by joining when WP added more fabulous ways for us to connect. They never got to experience the Siberia of blogdom. Gratitude is so important to all we do. 🙂

    Dear Elizabeth,
This must surely be one of the best posts I have read in a very long time anywhere. Why? Because it is full of grace. It is full of kindness. It is choosing to see the best and the finest in others. So what if some choose to like and comment for reasons only known to themselves. Choose to believe in the best of their intentions anyway.

The message of this post touched me deeply because I think when we choose to see only the best in others – even when it’s just a smidgen of good in a sea of faults, we become the best that we can be.

I am blessed. I am honoured to know you. I really am. You choose to live out ideals and that makes all the difference.
    With much love and blessings,
    Sharon

      Dear Sharon,
I have to say that your comment touched my spirit and brought tears to my eyes. I am blessed. I am honoured to know YOU too!
So what if some choose to like and comment for reasons only known to themselves. Choose to believe in the best of their intentions anyway.

TY!!! Most of us have limited time and yes, we do the best we can. 18. 20/11/2012 9:13 pm

It’s interesting timing that I read your post tonight when you’re talking about how we comment and it’s almost three days from when you first posted! It’s funny that I don’t worry at all about how quickly someone responds to my posts, but I struggle when I have trouble keeping up and being timely with others! I don’t analyze either, Eliz! I really figure that bloggers in general are doing the best they can. It takes an incredible amount of time keeping up with everyone, and yet I really want to! One rule I did make for myself is that I won’t comment or click “like” unless I did take the time to read. I am genuinely interested, and I’m enjoying my new friends! 🙂 I hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving, my friend!

    • 21/11/2012 12:11 am

I get what you’re saying and I wrote this to acknowledge the fact that it is hard work liking and commenting in the community… and so instead of disdain, we can try a considerate, appreciative, kinder approach. I’m always behind and so when others visit me, I know they’ve made enormous effort to encourage me and I expect to return the blog love. TY!

You ask: What do you do to support your fellow bloggers not just your buddies?
I must admit I do struggle with this. You seem to read hundreds of blogs. I admire you for this, I really do. I always feel I’d like to be able to read a lot more blogs, Somehow, and it happens again and again, I miss out on reading or even looking at everything my ‘buddies’ write. Some blogs maybe are just a few pictures or a quote that appeals to me, well, this is not very time consuming to enjoy this. However, some other blogs are much more demanding. Whenever I take the time to read a more demanding blog, about a subject that interests me, I usually enjoy this very much. But strangely enough I always seem to be running out of time. It is the same with keeping up reading all the books I set out to read. With some books to finish them it takes me ages!
I wished I could read a bit faster and had more stamina to go on reading for longer. However, I must be glad I can read at all for I have some problems with my eye-sight. But maybe some of it is more psychological. I wouldn’t know. Maybe age plays a part too. I’ll; be eighty this year! 🙂

It’s sad how easily we can forget how important kindness and giving are – not only to those around us, but to ourselves. Simply living in a manner of giving and sharing with others changes everything about what we are and how we react to others – it creates a chain reaction, too, of people paying it forward, sometimes without even realizing that’s what they’re doing.

I agree: bloggers have power of words but we have to be careful with what we wright and outline things as our personal experience/expertise or mixed. Just showing your life can be hurtful for many

Driving changes can be a little bit scary but at the same time, it’s exhilarating for me, thanks for the inspirations and motivations as I know many people are reluctant to drive changes.

I really felt the line “there is no delight in owning anything unshared”. As much as we want to keep things to ourselves… what does that do? We can’t express the joy or excitement we have with the people we love. It is point less to be selfish. Share your experiences.
