Veterans Day: Honoring All Who Served…

Veterans Day: Honoring All Who Served…

Raw: Pres Obama Lays Wreath at Arlington

Today, in America, we honor the armed service men and women who put country before self. Veterans Day, also known as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day; is a time when we gather to honor those who fought wars so the rest of us could have world peace.  While some might think it’s ironic to see peace as a goal of war, it is appropriate to encourage all to seek peace on this special day; both inner and outer peace. In remembering those who fought bravely to keep us safe, we must use this opportunity to decide what peace means to us, to determine how we can maintain peace in the world, and then dig deep within for our own personal version of same.

“But the freedom that they fought for, and the country grand they wrought for, Is their monument to-day, and for aye.” Thomas Dunn English

Veterans Day: Honoring All Who Served…

Another way we can honor this special day is by focusing our energies on giving back to our veterans during the coming holiday season; Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and other days of celebration. Instead of spending money on endless trinkets and toys, we can make a holiday donation to the following organizations that help veterans and their families: The American Legion, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Disabled American VeteransThe Vietnam Veterans Of America and any other groups that call your heart. For a change, let’s brighten the holidays for a veteran too. More below!

“We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” Cynthia Ozick

Veterans Day: Honoring All Who Served…

One thing that stands out on this day is the spirit of gratitude that many express towards our servicemen and women. My prayer is that we not forget to give thanks for the blessings of freedom and peace we enjoy. Let us add Peace to the top of our special list of gifts we plan to share with family, friends and ultimately, with the world. May peace prevail in our hearts… What are your thoughts? What does this day mean to you? How do you honor Veterans Day? Do share! Thank you.

*Please bear with me as I continue to catch up on reading and commenting on your blogs… I’m halfway there. Thank you all for your patience! :-)

Positive Motivation Tip: On Veterans Day, it is important to examine what war and peace mean to us, and work hard to ensure our children grow up in a world that is at peace with each other.

Elizabeth, thank you for taking the time to create this tribute to Veterans, and to all the men and women in the armed forces. They are a monument to selflessness. Reading the world news is a daily reminder for me that we cannot take our life and society in America for granted. We have possibilities and hope that others around this world do not have 🙂

    • 14/11/2012 11:48 pm

That is true and we must remember to be grateful for it and not abuse it. TY! 🙂

We honored our personal WWII veteran yesterday and his friend with a nice dinner. It was also his 94th birthday.
    Nice post Elizabeth!

Thank you for this beautifully written post, Elizabeth! Truly a lovely remembrance of our veterans – and a reminder of what we can do for them as well. Nicely done (and thank you for the pingback, too!)

    • 14/11/2012 11:54 pm

TY and I enjoyed reading your post on the same subject too. They are truly deserving of the accolades.

  8. 12/11/2012 10:52 am

Thank you, Elizabeth, for reminding us that this day is about peace. I just watched Warhorse with my kids this weekend and thanked God that we have not had a World War in our generation. I really believe that if we seek inner peace, then the outer peace will follow.

    • 14/11/2012 11:55 pm

I agree with you… peace is imperative in our world today and we must do all we can to preserve it. TY!

Thank you, Eliz for honoring Veterans.
We honored our Canadians as well. A sobering reminder of the freedom we owe to men and women worldwide.

    • 14/11/2012 11:57 pm

Exactly… we must never take our freedom for granted. TY!

  11. 12/11/2012 4:05 pm

They should all be included when giving thanks. Wonderful post, Elizabeth.

  12. 12/11/2012 6:03 pm

Great post, Elizabeth! Thank you for honoring our veterans. We, too, always donate to USO during holidays.

    • 15/11/2012 12:01 am

Good for you… I think everyone should make the effort to give to at least one of the agencies listed above. TY! 🙂

  13. 12/11/2012 6:30 pm

Eliz….a beautiful post. Remembering those who currently protect our freedom and those who fought valiantly in past conflicts, is so important; and also an important lesson to pass on to our children. And Peace…Peace always~

    • 15/11/2012 12:02 am

I agree with you… Lots of lessons in courage and peacekeeping. TY! 🙂

  14. 12/11/2012 11:15 pm

I am so appalled and incensed that there is so much inefficiency and bureaucracy for our veterans who have problems with their health or when they want to start a new life after returning from combat to the United States. This is not right!

    • 15/11/2012 12:04 am

Well, this new administration will address the concerns you raise and hopefully correct them. TY!

  15. 13/11/2012 6:21 am

i pray for a world without conflict
    nice post

  16. 13/11/2012 7:01 am

    Great post! Thanks for sharing!

  17. 13/11/2012 11:27 am

Likeitiz, I totally agree! Our government needs to step up to make sure these heroes have easy access to post-combat training for “regular” jobs and health care ASAP. Thank you for the post, as always.

    • 15/11/2012 12:15 am

Our veterans deserve so much. TY for your feedback too! 😉

  18. 13/11/2012 8:59 pm

Thank you for honoring the men and women in uniform. For a popular blog, glad you took this time to broadcast their existence for a lot of your fans to hear. I work with them so I know their worth. They deserve attention and getting things in return.

    • 15/11/2012 12:18 am

Veterans everywhere deserve all the accolades they can get. It is truly the greatest effort… to serve your country.

  19. 13/11/2012 9:30 pm

It seemed this year there were more Veteran’s Day ceremonies in our area than in previous years. I think the fact that we still have some WW II Veterans living while at the same time so many younger men and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq may have multiplied the focus and attention. It’s never too often to be reminded of the sacrifice. Well done, Eliz.

    • 15/11/2012 12:20 am

I agree… I didn’t notice a shift in my area but your observations are correct. TY for checking in.

  20. 14/11/2012 2:00 am

Sometimes extraordinary circumstances can call forth extra ordinary qualities in men normally unnoticed and unsung in more peaceful times. Remembering and saluting their sacrifice and bravery can never be over done. Thankyou for this post.

    • 15/11/2012 12:21 am

I agree. because so many of our wars are fought abroad, it is easy to ignore the effort of those who gave so much… TY for your feedback.

  21. 14/11/2012 11:40 am

      • 17/11/2012 11:47 pm

It does come with the territory we call home — Motherhood.

  24. 15/11/2012 1:57 pm

I am very critical to wars in general and more specifically of all the wars the US have entered since WWII. But I still believe it’s important and appropriate to honour all those who were willing to fight for their country and what their country asked them to fight for.

    • 17/11/2012 11:50 pm

I hear you… I’m not a proponent of war either, but I do believe in honoring those who serve. They are courageous, dedicated folk who sometimes pay the ultimate price for their service. TY!

  25. 16/11/2012 5:13 am

    A thought provoking post Eliz!

    • 17/11/2012 11:52 pm

TY Deepa and it is a topic worth pursuing. 🙂

  26. 17/11/2012 11:16 am

I agree with Munchow above: I have no interest in war, have demonstrated against several but I have great respect for those who serve. It takes a special type of person and I’m definitely not one.

    • 17/11/2012 11:56 pm

It does takes a special type of person to train/serve in war…. I respect the spirit of courage and sacrifice they have. TY Marcia!

We in Europe have a totally different attitude towards all that’s guns and wars and soldiers. Interesting how different the perspective can be.

It’s interesting how much veterans are honored in the US. In Europe, everything military has something….not so popular to it.
