Weekly Photo Challenge: Mine…

01/10/2012

“We do not remember days, we remember moments. The richness of life lies in memories we have forgotten. Cesare Pavese

Weekly Photo Challenge: Mine… Camera, passport, wildflowers, adventure; all the memories are mine.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Mine… World travel remains a favorite on my list; trips taken and trips still on my bucket list. (credit: Wikipedia)

Weekly Photo Challenge: Mine… Creativity; Art, Music, Fashion, Museum trips

Memory: On October 1 and October 2, watch PBS at 9-11pm – Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, a four-hour documentary.

I thought about this week’s photo challenge offered by Sara Russo, and what stood out for me were my memories of trips, photos captured, flora and fauna in my immediate surroundings, and time spent with friends and family. Some of those memories are vivid, some are dim, and quite a few have simply faded into oblivion… So for now, I offer the obvious and will upload some more photos later… (updated) I still have to catch up on blog visits after an incredibly hectic week. Thank you all for your love and patience! Thank you Sara! 🙂

“When I was younger, I could remember anything, whether it had happened or not.” Mark Twain

Weekly Photo Challenge: Mine… The beauty of flowers; both the colorful and fragrant kind… and our pet cat Tangy in the middle of it all

Weekly Photo Challenge: Mine… Hiking in nature pulls me closer to myself and this Bear Mountain, NY, hiking challenge with my martial arts club members was memorable and mine..

Memory: Monday October 1, 2012, has been declared a public holiday in celebration of Nigeria’s 52nd Independence Day. Happy Birthday!

When I saw this week’s challenge, I asked myself a question (Ok, three): What is mine? What is mine? What is truly mine? As I thought about it, I remembered what my Dad used to say: “Go to school. Get an education. No one can take your education and the knowledge gained from you.”  Thanks Dad! You were right, but in this current economy, sadly, an education is not enough; resilience, a healthy mental attitude, faith, grace, skillful action, and the goodwill of others have more currency… Memories of better days help too and that’s what I claim as mine. Above and below are collages of snapshots that contribute memories of what I claim as mine.

“Of what significance are the things you can forget?”
Henry David Thoreau

Weekly Photo Challenge: Mine… Creativity; More Art, Music, Fashion, Food, Museum visits…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Mine… Socially responsible actions especially in tough times; Doing GOOD anyway

Memory:  Oct 1,1951 – 1st treaty signed by woman ambassador-Eugenie Anderson, 1957 – First appearance of “In God We Trust” on U.S. paper currency, 1958 – Inauguration of NASA, 1962 – James Meredith became 1st black at U of Mississippi and more.

This challenge gave me a lot to think about … and some of it made me sad. We live in a world were the rift between the haves and have-nots is steadily growing. Yes, I am grateful for the good in my life and yes, I am disturbed by the inequities. If we have everything and others have nothing, what do we really have? What is mine?  Share!  Have a great week.  Thank you for stopping by. What are your thoughts? What photos did you share on Mine to fit the challenge? Was it easy/hard to find photos that supported your perspective on the subject? Were you drawn to certain types of photos for the prompt? Do share? Thank you! :-)

*Please bear with me as I continue to catch up on your blogs and commenting… Thank you all for your patience! :-)

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. I will list some when  Zemanta  offers them up! 🙁  I added a few from WP Daily Post below. (I will update it and add more). We all appreciate trackbacks/ping-backs and Likes from fellow bloggers too! Check out how others interpreted the theme – Mine – also below. ***

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Weekly Photo Challenge: Mine Mine. Is there a place, object, or view that’s entirely yours, or you’re a bit selfish or possessive about? Is it a feeling you feel when you look at the photo, or perhaps an unwillingness to share? I get rather possessive about that first cup of coffee in the morning. It’s definitely mine and I want it all to myself. Share a picture that means MINE to you!

Positive Motivation Tip: What is mine? My actions and memories of people, places, things and life enjoyed.

These are all things I’m passionate about as well! I’m a Canon girl too 🙂

    • 02/10/2012 1:54 am

Same here Gilly and thanks! TY all for your feedback! I will return later today to start visiting your blogs and liking you all back. 🙂

  2. 01/10/2012 11:09 pm

Fun idea! When it boils down to it, my passport is my only possession I’m not willing to give away, or share … 🙂

  3. 01/10/2012 11:53 pm

    what great interpretations! 🙂

    • 02/10/2012 1:28 pm

TY Lisa! For some reason, I panicked when I saw the prompt… and then I spent time thinking about it. 🙂

  4. 02/10/2012 1:26 am

A very deep and thoughtful interpretation of “mine”, Eliz. You give us food for thought – again!

    • 02/10/2012 1:30 pm

TY Barb! You are so generous… Honestly, I didn’t know where to start with it but with time, an idea popped up… I am grateful for that. 🙂

  5. 02/10/2012 1:30 am

Why do you need 2 passports for!? Lovely memories from your pictures. Lots of joy.

    • 02/10/2012 1:34 pm

TY for asking Janet! One is an old expired passport which was sent back to me when I renewed it and I felt the photo looked a bit better with two passports in it. Plus it had memories (stickers and visa stamps) from old trips. Old tucked in the new. 🙂

  6. 02/10/2012 1:34 am

Excellent entry. So personal. Thanks for sharing.

    • 02/10/2012 1:35 pm

TY for your kind words too! 🙂 For some reason, this post tugged at my heart. 😉

  7. 02/10/2012 2:49 am

Love the way you tackled this one, Elizabeth. Tangy amongst all those beautiful flowers, is the winner for me. 🙂

    • 02/10/2012 1:37 pm

TY Adin! I use Picasa to scramble my photos and create collages, and when I saw this one with Tangy in the middle, it made me smile… I love it too. 😉

  8. 02/10/2012 2:50 am

I love your collages – they could only be yours 🙂

    • 02/10/2012 1:39 pm

Oh thank you so much Tilly! They are mine, and I have now learned another way to show many pictures without uploading so many individual shots at once… If you click on the picture, you’ll see a much larger, more detailed version… Thanks again! 🙂

    • 03/10/2012 3:12 am

WoW! Thanks Tilly! I must have wandered off when you replied as I would have chatted a bit more… I love it when a blog friend is online to continue a long distance conversation… TY for checking out the close ups of my collages. I’m enjoying this new found way of showing photos… 😉 Will be by your blog soon.

  9. 02/10/2012 4:26 am

Great post! Inspiring. How do you do your collages?

    • 02/10/2012 1:53 pm

TY gkm! I use Picasa 3.9 which offers a great way to organize, edit, and share your photos, to scramble my photos and create collages. Once you upload your photos, it has a tab to click if you wish to create a collage… It is pretty intuitive to use too. Here’s a link for Windows http://picasa.google.com/ and here’s one for Mac http://picasa-mac.en.softonic.com/mac 🙂

  10. 02/10/2012 5:30 am

    that’s a good answer!
    “What is mine?
My actions and memories of people,
    places, things and life enjoyed…”

    • 02/10/2012 1:54 pm

TY Frizz! I will add your link here… I didn’t get any rec’s from Zemanta and didn’t see you on the WP DP page. 🙂

  11. 02/10/2012 5:33 am

I love everything about this post. Simple fabulous 🙂
The collages have inspired me to make an attempt at that. Thanks. :-).

  12. 02/10/2012 7:19 am

Great post – love the composition of the top photo!!

    • 02/10/2012 2:01 pm

Thank you so much for your feedback! I took that yesterday afternoon when I found out what the challenge was… and those wildflowers (or weeds 😆 ) are from my backyard. 🙂

  13. 02/10/2012 7:47 am

I so enjoy your Weekly Photo Challenge posts and this one was exceptionally thoughtful and thought-provoking. Thanks.

    • 02/10/2012 2:03 pm

TY so much Suellen! It was a challenge and I’m grateful that my muse found a way to respond to it. Will be visiting everyone shortly! 🙂

  14. 02/10/2012 8:45 am

Great post and pictures! can’t take a photo of my own camera as I only have one but would have definitely put it in the picture too, had I been able to.
Awesome way to show what’s yours! Your art is also truly part of you. Thanks for sharing.
    Cheers!
    Jul’

    • 02/10/2012 2:28 pm

TY Jul’ for your comment! Could you ask a friend with a camera to lend you theirs for a few minutes and just put your memory card in their camera, take the shot and then give them back theirs, no? 😉
I’m still getting used to shooting with the Canon camera in the photo and tend to use my other one; a Canon Powershot more… so it was easy to do. I hear you… The collage for each photo file was created via Picasa… and was fun to do. Thanks again! 🙂

  15. 02/10/2012 9:31 am

I enjoyed your response to the challenge this week – the collages are such a good idea.
I have in mind an idea for my entry – just need to wait for the juxtaposition to be completed 😉

    • 02/10/2012 2:29 pm

TY Colline and I’m looking forward to seeing yours… sounds intriguing! 🙂

      • 02/10/2012 2:36 pm

Will be able to take the photos tomorrow 🙂

      • 02/10/2012 3:08 pm

Great! I’ll be by to catch it. 😉

  16. 02/10/2012 9:42 am

    Fantastic! I love the collages.

  17. 02/10/2012 9:55 am

What a beautiful and thoughtful post, Elizabeth.

    • 02/10/2012 2:30 pm

TY Naomi and good to see you again! 🙂

      • 02/10/2012 2:40 pm

I have been on the road almost since June, and am so far behind in my blogging, but it feels good to be back and on the road to catching up.

      • 02/10/2012 3:09 pm

Welcome back Naomi! You are not alone! I’m still working on last week’s posts and comments and will need to do double time… Phew! 🙂

  18. 02/10/2012 10:38 am

“Of what significance are the things you can forget?” What a phenomenal quote! I haven’t heard it before, but I absolutely love it. And I taped “Half the Sky” last night and will look forward to seeing it. I admire all your travel, Elizabeth and hope you find a way to get to all the other places you dream about! 🙂 Debra

    • 02/10/2012 2:34 pm

TY Debra! Love the quote too and hope to see more sites in my lifetime… by God’s grace. I watched parts of the documentary last night too and will catch some more tonight or tape it. 🙂

  19. 02/10/2012 11:17 am

Wow beautiful beautiful interpretation of the challenge! I love the collages too 🙂

    • 02/10/2012 2:35 pm

TY dear one and the collages are easy to do once you create a folder of photos on Picasa 3.9 🙂

  20. 02/10/2012 11:40 am

Do you have two blogs? I just saw this post at http://www.theblogfarm.com/weekly-photo-challenge-mine/

    Thanks for the pingback.

    • 02/10/2012 2:37 pm

Hi CG! The Blog Farm is a directory of blogs and it’s also on the WP platform. John Gilbert, the admin, sometimes submits our posts after they appear on the site, so that is what you saw again. TY! 🙂

  21. 02/10/2012 12:01 pm

    Great idea… 🙂

  22. 02/10/2012 5:47 pm

    Very creative! 🙂

    • 02/10/2012 6:01 pm

TY so much and you are divinely creative. 😉

  23. 02/10/2012 6:17 pm

Fabulous and creative post! A great interpretation of the theme.

    • 03/10/2012 2:02 pm

TY Fergie and I’m looking forward to seeing yours… they are always fabulous! 🙂

  24. 02/10/2012 10:00 pm

Nice take on the theme. Memories sure are the one thing that solely belongs to the individual. It cannot be taken away, it cannot diminish by sharing…

  25. 03/10/2012 2:27 am

I’ve also being puzzling over what I really consider as mine, and they are mostly intangible things – what you have said here about memories resonates, and the appreciation and enjoyment of things we see as we go about our lives. I like your perspective.

    • 03/10/2012 1:54 pm

Thank you Bluebee! Glad to see you again… I thought about it for a while too and the memory bit felt true to me… Glad you liked it. 🙂

  26. 03/10/2012 4:56 am

Excellent work for this week photo challenge my friend ,
    Thanks for sharing 🙂

    • 03/10/2012 1:58 pm

TY Jake! I love what you do with your themes too… Blessings! 😉

  27. 03/10/2012 4:56 am

I like your interpretation…our memories are our own. Love the quote at the beginning too. Oh…and thanks for the pingback as well!

    • 03/10/2012 1:59 pm

TY too for your feedback… This one has been close to the heart for me… 🙂

  28. 03/10/2012 7:13 am

Good you found a way to show and write about the – in fact – only thing really MINE. Thoughts and memories. Well done, I enjoyed it.

    • 03/10/2012 2:01 pm

TY for your comment… It’s interesting that when I first read it, I felt anxious… TY for the feedback as I’m digesting the responses and more. 🙂

  29. 03/10/2012 5:10 pm

This is a lovely and thoughtful response to the challenge. 🙂

    • 03/10/2012 8:59 pm

TY Imelda and as usual, I’m working my way to other blogs. 😉

  30. 04/10/2012 12:21 am

Wonderful displays…..how did you get those to post like a vision board? I know you have tons to do and with the twins! Never lose hope, you keep going strong. It is hard to be a mom, work, blog, comment and do all that you do. I will always support you Eliz. ♥

    • 04/10/2012 7:15 pm

TY Jackie! I created the collages with Picasa 3.9 a photo organizing software program that you can download for free. I added the link here for you: Picasa 3.9 – http://picasa.google.com/
You can also try Pixlr Free – http://pixlr.com/express/ also helps you create collages but they require a bit more effort… Try it! 🙂
As for me, all is well and with a bit more breathing room I can do more… I am grateful for your friendship and understanding too. 😉

  31. 04/10/2012 12:02 pm

This is such a wonderful post. A perfect entry for the challenge. I am amazed at how you created your poster boards for us to enjoy. A beautiful way to showcase your memories. Well done …!!! Isadora

  32. 04/10/2012 8:16 pm

Been meaning to print my photos but been procrastinating on it. It’s just too many of them to choose. Would love to see you hiking photos in good size. 😀
    High Five Canon users. 😀
    Awesome entry.
I haven’t been active lately, and am also behind on blogging. 🙁

    • 05/10/2012 1:51 am

      Hi Rommel!
Thanks for checking in, I feel a bit sad because I’m behind too. If you click on the photo, it will give you a bigger version to look at… I will share some more photos in a future post on my hiking venture. Will stop by your blog soon… TY for your patience! 🙂

  33. 05/10/2012 11:09 am

    • 05/10/2012 7:54 pm

TY Sunshine and I will complete my rounds I promise… I am so behind and connectivity in my area has been dodgy of late. 🙂

      • 05/10/2012 8:12 pm

As I always say to you, Elizabeth, it’s all cool in the Universe…I think most of us regulars totally know how it is so, not to worry.
        🙂

  35. 05/10/2012 7:28 pm

By the way, what type of Canon are you using and is it simple to figure out…I am looking to get a decent camera but every time the thought comes to me, it overwhelms me.;(

    • 05/10/2012 7:53 pm

I have two Canon cameras that I like and use. The Powershot is delightful and takes a wide range of shots… and it’s light compared to the Rebel T1 which is heavy but takes great photos too.The Rebel needs a few lenses; wide angle, macro, telephoto and they are pricey. So, I’m waiting to buy my wide angel lens and then I’ll use it more. For now, I reach a bit more frequently for the Powershot and that is what I used to take the first photo that included the other camera. Some swear by Nikon or other brands but I like Canon for its ease of use. Again, a totally amateur opinion. The professionals might think differently, although my photography school instructor loves Canon too. 🙂

I enjoyed your use of the photo collages to respond to the challenge. ~ Kat

TY Kat! They were perfect for the challenge and I had just started playing around with them .. so I was glad. 🙂

Our parents must have met somewhere before, because my father used to tell me, too, that an education is the one thing that nobody can take away from you barring death.
