Musings: On Prayers…

I receive Daily Word, a monthly book filled with prayers and uplifting messages for each day, from Unity,  and I find the inspiring words and stories help set the tone for my day. It is one of several publications I get that enrich both the spirit and the mind, and I enjoy reading through my copy before giving it away. While reviewing the July/August issue, I read a beautiful story about the power of prayer. A young exchange student had been attacked by her host family’s dog, and as the doctors prepared her for emergency surgery, it was a favorite prayer that calmed her. The prayer was James Dillet Freeman‘s “Prayer for Protection.” James wrote that prayer for soldiers during World War II, and its enduring message continues to uplift and embolden people world wide. Here’s Freeman’s prayer:

Prayer for Protection by James Dillet Freeman
The Light of God surrounds me.
The Love of God enfolds me.
The Power of God protects me.
The Presence of God watches over me.
The Mind of God guides me.
The Life of God flows through me.
The Laws of God direct me.
The Power of God abides within me.
The Joy of God uplifts me.
The Strength of God renews me.
The Beauty of God inspires me.
Wherever I am, God is!

In challenging times, many turn to prayer, and even some who don’t believe in it, appreciate the offer to be prayed for. Given the tragic events that happened at the Sikh temple in Wisconsin, there is a great need for prayer. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of all in the Sikh community affected by this tragedy. Prayers and blessings are needed at this time and always. I believe in the power of prayer, not as a panacea for whatever ails me, but as an alive force and intelligence that guides the way. It works in miraculous and mysterious ways and brings us back to a place of calm when we feel flustered. Do you have a favorite prayer? Share one of your favorite spirit boosters below. More below!

Affirmative Prayer for Unexpected Blessings by Edwene Gaines
I live in the midst of infinite abundance.
The abundance of Spirit is my infinite source.
The river of Life’s good never stops flowing.
It flows through me into lavish expression.
Good comes to me through unexpected avenues.
Spirit works in a multitude of ways to bless me.
I now open my heart and mind to receive my good.
With Spirit as my source, nothing is too good to be true.
Wonderful things happen to me, in me, and around me.
I give freely and fearlessly into life and life gives back to me with fabulous increase.
Blessings come from every direction in expected and unexpected ways.
Spirit provides for me in a generous and wonderful manner.
I am filled with joy, peace, and gratitude.
Thank you, Loving Spirit!

Above is another uplifting prayer by a Unity Minister, Edwene Gaines.  Affirmations raise the vibration of our space and pull us closer to grace and inner wisdom. I feel a great calm after saying one of my prayers, and I do hope you find some calm and comfort in them. Have a spectacular day! You are already a blessing to others. 🙂 What are your thoughts? Do you believe in the power of prayer? Do you have a favorite prayer that grounds you? What impact has it had on your life? What insights could you offer others? Do share! Thank you. 😉

*Please bear with me as I catch up on your blogs and commenting… I’m back on track with reading and responding to your blogs; albeit at a slow pace. Thank you all for your patience! 🙂

Positive Motivation Tip:Words have power and prayers are made up of words infused with affirmative energy. We are lifted and encouraged by prayer. Embrace it!

Beautiful post about prayer and its relevance. We have to slow down enough to continue to pray – in thanks and in need.

Yes, I agree. Taking time to reflect is key to managing our time on this planet… 🙂

This is so wonderful because I have recently rediscovered prayer (I was brought up with it but have since become rather cynical). I am now cautiously re-entering the whole prayer thing so thankyou very much for this fantastic post!

I went through a similar renaissance with prayer too. I rediscovered it later and have grown with it. TY! 🙂

    “Breathe in me
    O Holy Spirit
    That my thoughts
may all be holy…” the beginning of St. Augustine prayer to the Holy Spirit is my morning prayer before all hell breaks loose. 🙂
    Great post!

I do believe in prayer…It seems I have a running conversation with God all of the time…But, when I need answers that are too much for me to bear…I have to bend my kness and give Him my all…Focusing…and lifting my appeal up to Him…
I will also remember from Garth Brook’s song…”Thank God For Unanswered Prayers”…knowing God knows all…and will take care of what is troubling my heart…when the time is right…mkg

Uplifting post Thank You :+) Wonderful! The first prayer is one I have been saying for years but I only had the first 5 lines to memory. It would be nice to memorize the last part too. I believe prayer can be very effective.

TY Karen… You know that incident in Wisconsin shook me to the core and I am saddened by the violence and pain in our world… So many are hurting and turning to violence…. which is never the answer. TY for your feedback. 🙂
