Weekly Photo Challenge: Fleeting Moment… Street Photos from Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Man and man’s best friend waiting for WALK light…dog walking is a popular pastime.

I’ve always loved street photography but didn’t realize it was a genre within the art and craft of taking photographs. As a child, I loved looking through magazines that showcased fleeting or captured moments of people, subjects and events in every day life; subjects living life boldly or quietly, giving the observer, shielded by the camera‘s lens, a glimpse into the lives of strangers. I love this week’s challenge because as Eisenstaedt says above, life is a succession of  fleeting moments, and any of those moments might share something significant. Those fleeting moments include pauses or momentary acts of waiting and then movement. My photos for this challenge were taken on the streets of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. More below!

Greenpoint is friendly, family oriented, and the northernmost neighborhood in Brooklyn; an oasis for those folk who wish to escape the noise and endless grind of Manhattan. It was always considered a working class area with a huge Polish population, but in recent years, young professionals and those seeking something a bit more laid-back have moved in. It has also attracted a large Latino, South Asian and North African population, and has an ever growing yoga community. Naturally, the price of real estate has gone up. When I went there to capture life on the street, I could tell that people loved hanging out; walking their dogs, biking, skateboarding, people watching, chatting on their cellphones and waiting for the endless street lights to change.

The man with his dog observed me taking pictures, and turned his back when I came a little closer to capture him and his friends. Then he suddenly threw his hands in the air, turned around and said: “WTF! You wanna photograph me?” I smiled and said. “Yeah?” and took the shot. Only in NY. The Astral Apartments are beautiful and I loved the way the sun cast its shadow against the walls. The man and his son were watching a bird flying back and forth to the top of the building. I observed and captured their delight but my shot of the bird was a wash. 🙁    😆 More below!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Fleeting Moment… Street Photos from Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Cute guy with adorable dog (named oliver)… I asked to photograph them.

In putting these photos together, I tried to capture the essence of what I was experiencing on the street.  People observed me filming away and most didn’t seem to mind. I was trying to be attentive to what Andrew Wyeth termed in his quote, “It’s a moment that I’m after, a fleeting moment, but not a frozen moment.” Andrew Wyeth, and I aimed for those fleeting moments on the street when my subjects seemed engaged in living their lives even as some waited for the next thing…  I didn’t want my subjects to be frozen in time. I hope I honored that premise. The last shot was the only posed one because I had to capture that beautiful dog. His owner had a warm smile, and was so patient as Oliver first refused to look at the camera until he was prompted to do so for the 2nd shot.  Plus hey, the guy was cute too.

    Wonderful! I LOVE street photos. Do you know the FB page “Humans of New York”? Fascinating photos, and Greenpoint looks great for people-watching. (I particularly love Oliver and his cute owner, although they were obviously posing for their picture!)

      Thank you Jackie. The initial challenge for me is that I live in the suburbs and we do a lot of driving… I ended up going to Greenpoint for an event and walked around taking pictures. It was fun and solved my concern. Maybe you might try the same approach. Best wishes!

    Hello Elizabeth, this is a very interesting presentation of Greenpoint and I like your shots…. It is not easy to take photos of people without them being aware of it…unless you are some paparazzi with a kick-ass lens and can do it from afar. I had pretty much a similar experience when I was taking pics for “friendship” challenge… The moment the subject gets aware you are taking pictures of him, the moment is lost… Thank you for sharing this with us.       True… I tried to be as discrete as possible and found that when people were engrossed in what they were doing, they didn’t notice. Some saw me take pictures of others, and when I turned the lens on them they either didn’t seem to care or they became self conscious. I took a ton of photos and chose the ones I felt represented the challenge well. I did use a telephoto lens to maintain some distance. But, as with my WTF guy, some people have a finely tuned radar.     😀 I should get a dslr with a telephoto lens, as I shot mine with canon powershot g1 x and had to come veeery close :D. It is fine nevertheless, right?

      Yes, it is definitely fine and if you get a DSLR down the road it will help a lot… I’m still learning how to use mine… The series here were not taken with my Canon DSLR but with my Canon powershot with a great telephoto lens.

    I like street photography and I loved these pictures. I’m curious what happened with WTF guy after you took the second picture. Your post has given me motivation to bring my camera to work and to go out at lunch and take some pictures of people on the street at lunch rather than just sit around and do nothing.

      I would encourage you to start as it gets easier with time. Plus, there are places where people will be more accommodating and places where they won’t be. Go for it. After I took the picture, he smiled and playfully threatened to send the dog after me… I smiled back and asked if the dog was calm or vicious… and he assured me the dog was okay. I smiled, waved, and then gingerly walked away. He was a tough guy with a good heart… 😉

        yes it is so sad sometimes you can just pass a sea of people all engaged on the phone. Nothing is private, they row , they swear they love and talk about private things! But what really gets my blood up is drivers using cell phones !! It is illegal to use a phone while driving unless it is completely hands free! I see so many one handed drivers struggling round bends and creep along in heavy traffic!! Even worse they even text while driving??
        Back to your blog I love it, when I was in New York about six years ago I saw many such ‘fleeting moments’ and I photo some too. I had an Olympus Trip with film in it. I remember on in particular some men sitting in front of a Church having their shoes shined , it was near the Stock exchange I think! That is a lasting memory to me!

      TY dear one! I appreciate the feedback… You know what? I really enjoy the process and hope to continue to learn and grow with it. I was surprised when I read on a blog last week that they saw the weekly challenge as a competition! I don’t see it that way at all. I see it as a learning and sharing opportunity. Some have that philosophy and others don’t… Why must everything be viewed through the lens of competition? How about doing for the joy of it? Is that why some withhold responses? What a wasted opportunity to connect with others. Anyway, I suppose, to each his own. 😉

    I had a terrible time maintaining an Internet connection yesterday. The post would load the words and not the photos before “timing out”. So frustrating. As I read the words, I developed an impression of what the photos would be. Wrong! I pictured more gray and less green. Less people in some and more in others and some blurring with the “fleeting” moments. When I finally actually saw the photos this morning, they were so much more fun than my imagination! Oh dear. What does that say about me?! Lol! Beautiful, fun photos and a great idea! 🙂

      TY Karen! I’m glad you persisted. Thank God that I blog because I must or the towel would be tossed… I kept getting 504 errors yesterday as my blog experienced a spike in traffic and the system shut it down or whatever the explanation might be. It was sad, but I’m getting stronger at letting go and letting God in situations. Life is too short to stress over everything. I contacted support… Have a blessed week ahead! 🙂

    OMG – I have the same quote by Henri Cartier-Bresson on my photo. WOW – well, you know what they say,”Great minds think alike”.
    Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I used to travel trough Greenpoint, Brooklyn many, many times. Well – throughout all of Brooklyn for that matter. Fabulous to see all the diversity and imagery that is the flavor of Brooklyn. Love the guy with his hands up saying WTF, etc. He is soooo New York. It brought a big grin to my face. You gotta love that rawness they exhibit. Great entry ….!!!!

    Fleeting moments is a wonderful theme. Almost every second is a fleeting moment, but we just don’t notice. I love the picture of the the little boy looking up just like his daddy! That’s so special, and makes me think about how our children and grandchildren are watching us all the time…maybe we need to notice the fleeting moments so they will! 🙂 Debra

      TY! I can relate… After taking so many spinning classes my knees hurt a lot too. I saw a lot of bicycles in the area and it reminded me of Kyoto. 😉

    The saying “every picture tells a story” is really true with your photos. People are fascinating and I am looking at the genre of Street Photography with excited interest.
