you catch it like the flu,
When someone smiled at me today,
I started smiling too.I passed around the corner

Have you smiled today? Sometimes we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our lives, and a smile is the furthest thing from our minds. If your day has been stressful, blissful or uneventful, take a moment to smile anyway, it will help shift your mood. Then, spread some joy around. By now, we know there’s a ton of research on the subject. Smiling increases endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin to help our immune system. It helps us relax, express our feelings, elevate our mood and increase our confidence levels. Hey, it might even help us live longer…

What puts a smile on your face? Hugmamma and I had a funny exchange on her blog that started with the question – How do you make a laughing face? Answer – Use the punctuation mark : so it’s – Colon lol colon. 😆 It got me thinking about the beauty and power of a simple smile… and it put one on my face. What would you do if you couldn’t smile anymore? Imagine never being able to smile again and it might help us appreciate the friendly smiles we get from others and the chance they give us to smile back. Remember the blessing/grace that gives us opportunities to put a smile on another person’s face; our child, a friend, loved ones, strangers. If we could no longer do so, it would surely make us sad. Smile!

It never ceases to amaze me, the power of a smile. The dog made me laugh and reminded me that I’ve never seen a ‘doodle’, golden or labra, that didn’t have a smile on their face. I think they’re onto something.

A few weeks ago after losing my Father In Law to Cancer and my beloved dog both in the same week. I noticed as I walked around a big smile hit my lips. I wondered why this was happening and I relized as people smiled big and broad back at me that somthing in my nature new that I needed this connection to others and that even through my sadness a big smile apeared on my face. I was so greatful for each and every smile back. :+) 😆
It worked! Thank You for teaching my the laughing smile. 😆

I am Linda Rogers and I am the original author of Smile for you. That is the original title of the poem you, and the world have renamed smiling is infectious. I didn’t sign my poem and copied it on 5×7 cards with a goofy grin drawn in ink on one side with the title Smile for you. The poem was on the other side and I made about 12 hand drawn copies and passed them out to people who looked like they needed a pick me up. I am happy it has gone on for nearly 30 years and done its job well. I am sad to see others taking credit for my work.

Thank you for the offer but I am not sure I am feature worthy. This is the one thing I have done that was note worthy. The poem was never meant to be about me or to garner fame. It was about the smiles on others faces. The problem lies in others copyrighting my poem. They take away the law abiding citizens right to distribute it freely. Since I didn’t keep a copy, sign my work, get the names of the strangers I gave it to, or put it in print I do not hold a copyright on my poem. Others have copyrighted it. I have contacted 3 of these people. One has it published in a childrens book and made up a story for his site about how he came to write my words. One has it on a website and has given or sold rights to others. None of them responded to my emails. Not even a simple acknowledgement or apology. I guess I will have to trust that the smiles will continue to go on as they have for nearly 30 years now. Thanks for listening to my rantings. 😀
Sorry to hear this… I did a bit of sleuthing and found you sharing your story on a number of sites. I would love to find one of those people you gave the 5×7 cards to… It would put this all to rest. Fascinating story that I think you should share with the New York Times. They could assign a journalist to dig deeper into the story. You might not think you are feature worthy but I think you are. Every time a creative person has their work taken by others, it needs to be addressed.
