Reflections: On Savoring SuperMoons…

07/05/2012

“For most people, we often marvel at the beauty of a sunrise or the magnificence of a full moon, but it is impossible to fathom the magnitude of the universe that surrounds us.” Richard H. Baker

Reflections: On Savoring SuperMoons…

I love the Supermoon and its unique qualities and energies.  So you can imagine my delight when I read about an impending Supermoon; scheduled to brighten the night sky on May 5th. A SuperMoon is a term coined by astrologer Richard Nolle, in 1979, for a phenomenon that occurs when the  moon appears to be both larger than the norm and closer to the earth.  It is according to notes in Wikipedia “the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the moon’s disk as seen from Earth.” The technical name is perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system. I found some examples on NASA and have shared same with you. The videos share vital information and the poetry compliment the moon in all her magnificence.

“Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.”Anton Chekhov

ScienceCasts: The Super Moon of May 2012

The Moon by Emily Dickinson
The moon was but a chin of gold
A night or two ago,
And now she turns her perfect face
Upon the world below.
Her forehead is of amplest blond;
Her cheek like beryl stone;
Her eye unto the summer dew
The likest I have known.
Her lips of amber never part;
But what must be the smile
Upon her friend she could bestow
Were such her silver will!
And what a privilege to be
But the remotest star!
For certainly her way might pass
Beside your twinkling door.
Her bonnet is the firmament,
The universe her shoe,
The stars the trinkets at her belt,
Her dimities of blue.

If I could sit on a balcony and gaze at the full moon, I would… More below 😉

“You have to be able to appreciate these things. How many people can say it was a full moon last night and appreciate it?” Sandy Miller

ScienceCasts: SuperMoon 2011

Famous Chinese Prose Poem bySu Shih (lived in the Song Dynasty (1037-1101)
How often does the bright moon come?
With Wine, I ask of the blue sky.
In the heavily palaces,
I wish to return there, riding the wind,
but fear that in the high places of jade halls and eaves,
I cannot fend off the cold. Rising to dance with my clear shadow,
scarcely possible that I among men,
turn around the red lacquered pavilions,
dip below the silken-curtained windows,
shine on the sleepless.

There ought not be regrets,
but why so often are you full at times of parting?
Men have sorrow and joy and farewell and union.
The moon has clouds and clear skies,
waxing and waning.

Perfection is rare since days of old,
so wish only that the years be long,
to share beauty even across a thousand miles.

I hope you enjoyed this outing… What are your thoughts? Have you seen a Supermoon?  Does it affect you in any way? Do you love the energy they radiate? What  impact do they make on earth and why? Do share! Thank you. 😉

*Please bear with me as I continue to catch up on your blogs and commenting… Thank you all for your patience! 🙂

  9. 08/05/2012 6:58 am

As though the full moon isn’t awesome enough? You have some wonderful takes here.

    • 13/05/2012 9:56 am

They impressed me too and I was glad to find them on the NASA site and share them. TY! 🙂

      • 13/05/2012 9:57 am

I thought you took these photos, and would not have known otherwise had you not clued me in. However, they are still fantastic shots! 😉

      • 13/05/2012 10:02 am

😆 I’m glad I mentioned it then. I I have my credits and attributions at the bottom of my post above my signature. I always give credit when the photos are not mine. The best part is that Wikipedia helps me find photos in the public domain and I add credits at the end. They all came from NASA. 🙂

  10. 08/05/2012 7:35 am

Eliz…those are some of the most amazing moon photos I’ve ever seen…and lovely with the poetry! Thank you and an early Happy Mother’s Day to you. 🙂

    • 13/05/2012 9:57 am

TY Viv! I still have to catch up with you too! Happy Mother’s Day to you! 🙂

I wish you could experience a night on my back porch. I have photos of the moon as seen from my back yard perch that are unbelievable. If I was computer savvy, I would share them with you right here; but this old gal just learned how to use the pull down menu on my computer. 😉

    • 13/05/2012 9:59 am

I hope you post them on your blog then… It would be great to see what you shot. I have lots of trees and they do tend to block out the moon at times. TY! 😉

  12. 08/05/2012 8:24 am

Just perfect photos! I love them! I was in awe Saturday night and caught in the most beautiful sight…I kept trying to take photos, which with my camera and ability was pretty funny! But I tried. I love the Emily Dickinson poem, Elizabeth. I didn’t know it, but I will be getting a copy of that. It’s lovely! Thank you. Debra

    • 13/05/2012 11:02 am

TY too Debra! Glad you enjoyed these pictures. I was impressed by them too. 🙂

  13. 08/05/2012 11:37 am

I remember seeing a news report on this. The moon was larger than normal, but it was too cloudy where I live to see it. Oh well. At least I knew about this.

    • 13/05/2012 11:17 am

At least we get to see the aftermath of shots shared by others. 😉

  14. 08/05/2012 11:42 am

As a “moon child” (cancerian), I’m a huge fan of the moon. We were in LA and missed seeing the moon rise, but your beautiful choice of poems made up for it! Thank you!

    • 13/05/2012 11:25 am

TY and I hope you had a great time in LA! 😉

    • 13/05/2012 11:28 am

I was impressed by the photos too. TY! 😉

  21. 09/05/2012 8:16 am

    Awesome gallery. Fantastic pictures!

  22. 09/05/2012 8:33 pm

The moon is so beautiful when so large in our sky whether day or night! I did peek at it a bit but it was hidden behind so many trees where I live low on the horizon. So much has been written an can be written: an enigma, powerful yet relatively small, here before and after our life spans, desolate yet inviting…

  23. 09/05/2012 10:59 pm

You are child of the moon but You are sunshine to all of us Elizabeth.Be blessed and thank You for sharing so amazing photos.

  24. 10/05/2012 4:05 pm
