Weekly Photo Challenge: Two Subjects…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Two Subjects... Hot Dogs & Fruit...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Two Subjects...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Two Subjects...

When I saw the Photo Challenge for this week – Two Subjects – I was nicely surprised. Yesterday, in Manhattan, as I waited in the lobby of a building for an appointment, I looked out the huge picture windows and two food stands on the street caught my eye. First, it was the rich and colorful fruit that pulled me in, and next was the juxtaposition of a hotdog stand next to a fruit stand. I rarely see those two combinations on a NYC street and so I reached for my camera to capture the scene outside. Both men saw me aiming my camera at them and quickly turned their faces away. They didn’t mind me taking a picture of their carts, as long as I didn’t include their faces in the shot… I’ve added shots of their separate carts for greater detail. A classic NY moment.

“Consulting the rules of composition before taking a photograph, is like consulting the laws of gravity before going for a walk.” Edward Weston

Weekly Photo Challenge: Two Subjects... The Crow & The Seagull

Weekly Photo Challenge: Two Subjects...

When I shared my photo series on the birds at my local Sam’s Club, I mentioned that a lonely crow was hanging around trying to join in the food fray. He was a determined little bird and even when several of the seagulls yelled at him to move on, he kept coming back for food. He had a friend or two in the crowd and when I saw him perched on the roof of the store watching the action below with a seagull for company, I captured this shot… two subjects.

The man with the plastic drums was quite proficient at his craft, and attracted attention whenever he started drumming. I like that there are plastic buckets of varying sizes in front of him, and attentive listeners behind him; a subject attracting subjects.

“In my photography, color and composition are inseparable. I see in color.” William Albert Allard

Weekly Photo Challenge: Two Subjects...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Two Subjects...

What I liked about this shot, which was taken from the High Line Park in the Chelsea area of Manhattan, is that there is a huge sign in front of that new apartment building advertising the restaurant across the street. However, the rendition of the buildings shown in the ad drawing excludes the newly constructed blue/black/white building. Sort of a reinvented scene within a scene. I’ve added a shot that shows the restaurant’s location.  More below! 😉

“Human happiness seems to consist in three ingredients; action, pleasure and indolence. And though these ingredients ought to be mixed in different proportions, according to the disposition of the person, yet no one ingredient can be entirely wanting without destroying in some measure the relish of the whole composition. composition.” David Hume

Weekly Photo Challenge: Two Subjects...

When I visited the Laduree shop for some macarons, I took lots of photos and this one was a lot of fun. I was trying to show the product and the sellers/buyers eager to share and taste it.  It took a few more shots to get this one and it fits in nicely with the dual purpose of buying and eating. Hope you enjoyed this! What are your thoughts? What photos depicting Two Subjects did you find? Was it easy/hard to find photos that made sense of your views on the topic of Two Subjects? Were you drawn to certain types of photos for the prompt? Do share? Thank you! 🙂 😉

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. I listed several via Zemanta below. I appreciate TRACKBACKS/PINGBACKS & LIKES from fellow bloggers too! Check out how others interpreted the theme TWO SUBJECTS below. ***

*Please bear with me as I continue to catch up on your blogs and commenting… Thank you all for your patience! 🙂

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Weekly Photo Challenge: Two Subjects. This “theme” is more of a composition challenge. In the picture above, there are actually two subjects – one in the foreground (the cup), and one in the background (the dog) – both are essential parts of the picture and they each contribute something differently to the photo. Share a picture that means Two Subjects to you!

Positive Motivation Tip: A handshake requires that two subjects be present. What happens beyond that initial gesture is anyone’s call. Enjoy!

love ’em – ‘specially the crow & the seagull 🙂 I found a photo I’d taken of 2 ravens on the river beach 🙂

    • 17/04/2012 10:51 am

TY! This was a bit of a challenge finding extra photos but then I enjoyed the process.;-)

  2. 14/04/2012 12:11 am

I like how long you watched with empathy the life conditions of the crow: “…even when several of the seagulls yelled at him to move on, he kept coming back for food. He had a friend or two in the crowd…”

    • 17/04/2012 10:53 am

Oh TY Frizztext! It was fascinating to watch and ,you know, they were interacting like humans do… both in good and bad ways. 🙂

  3. 14/04/2012 12:27 am

I like the Edward Weston quote about composition. My idea for this wek came to me in an instant and little time for composition, I was hungry! The High Line photo is interesting and the more I looked at it the more I liked it.

    • 17/04/2012 10:57 am

TY Ronnie! It was fun and scary at the same time. The first shot was obvious to me but the others took time and I had to find them…:-)

The street vendors are so new NY and the building shots are terrific. The birds won with me too but I love them all. Now I’ll take a macaron thanks! 😉

Enjoy the macaron! 😆 and TY for your feedback. It was a fun one too. 😉

  17. 14/04/2012 9:36 am

My daughter and I heard some EXTREMELY talented people like him all around NYC! Do you remember where you saw that man with his “drums?”

    • 17/04/2012 11:15 am

Oh yes, he was in Portland, Oregon, not New York. My daughter and flew out to Reed College for accepted students weekend and we took a tour of Portland. I really love the area… Now if I win the Lottery, I could have a home there. TY! 🙂

  18. 14/04/2012 9:39 am

What a fabulous set of photos to meet this week’s “Two Subjects” photo challenge! Love the macaroons and the “building within a building”, but the bird just won my heart, as any bird, anywhere, anyhow, anytime, ALWAYS win my heart!

    • 17/04/2012 11:16 am

Oh sweet… those birds were fascinating to watch too. TY! 🙂

  19. 14/04/2012 9:40 am

  24. 14/04/2012 5:49 pm

I love the black, white, and blue building in Manhattan, and the “picture within a picture.”

Also, I wanted to reach my hand into my computer screen and pull out one of those macaroons. They look delicious! 🙂

    • 17/04/2012 11:22 am

TY for the comments and the macaroons travel well virtually! 😆

  25. 14/04/2012 8:17 pm

nice collection of photos … two subjects 🙂
i like the last one, the colourful macarons are as enthralling as are the (stiff) sellers eager to seel them … 😀

    • 17/04/2012 11:23 am

TY Amira! That was a fun one and I must have gained a few pounds sampling the selections… Ah, the memory. 😉

  26. 14/04/2012 9:27 pm

It took an observant eye to capture the two themes so well…I loved the food trucks. You were clever to catch the theme so quickly there–to see the differences so readily. Gorgeous cookies…buying and eating. Good pairing! Debra

    • 17/04/2012 11:25 am

TY Debra! The street vendors were right there and I thought it would make for some nice NYC shots… I carry a camera with me everywhere these days… I have still missed a few great opportunities but… TY! 🙂

  27. 15/04/2012 12:21 am

I like the contrast between the crow & the seagull.
    Thanks for the pingback.

  28. 15/04/2012 12:41 am

LOL – you and your macaron festish! 😆

I liked the fruit v hotdogs as well – I agree there is something quite intriguing about them being placed together – almost as if to meet the possibly opposing tastes of couples strolling.

    • 17/04/2012 11:26 am

😆 So you noticed, eh? Yes, and I captured it for the same reason as I thought the same thing; sweet and savory. 😉

  29. 15/04/2012 7:21 am

Great shots, Elizabeth. Love to see NYC from afar.

  30. 15/04/2012 9:03 am

    Love the juxtapositions!

  31. 15/04/2012 10:30 am

great collection! I love the two birds.

  32. 15/04/2012 12:16 pm

I love the food carts. Something you don’t see in Reno. Last summer when I visited NYC I remember the carts lining the street, each with a slightly different offering. Miriam

    • 17/04/2012 11:28 am

Did you eat any vendor foods? They are quite good and sanitary… TY! 🙂

  33. 15/04/2012 5:02 pm

  35. 16/04/2012 4:55 am

Love the composition of the seagull and the crow – excellent! And, as always, love your shots of life in NYC 🙂

    • 17/04/2012 11:30 am

TY for your feedback! Those little scavenger birds really rocked it, eh? 😆

  36. 16/04/2012 7:16 am

Good shots! I’ve seen lots of hotdog carts in NYC, but never a fruit vendor.

    • 17/04/2012 11:32 am

Yes, right. The fruit vendors have become popular in the last 10 years or so… People like buying from them too because their prices are generally cheaper than the markets. TY! 🙂

  37. 17/04/2012 12:45 am

You see the world in it’s purity. The photos shows a moving picture of man’s daily struggles with life. may it be a hotdog vendor, a fruit vendor, the man on the streets that most of us see or failed to see everyday. Thank you for letting us remember , for making us see, things we no longer noticed, for toughing our hearts with your words. Have a blessed day my friend…

    • 17/04/2012 11:34 am

WoW, TY! You have a great and pure heart Island Traveler, you capture the essence of a situation and share it… I had not considered that aspect of it but I agree. 🙂
