On Life: Food For Thought…

Powerful Expectations
The famous French ruler, Napoleon Bonaparte was given a star sapphire when he was a boy. The sapphire came with a prophecy that it would bring him good fortune and make him Emperor of France. Napoleon believed in the promise of the sapphire and accepted it to be true. He was crowned Emperor of France in 1804.

On Life: Food For Thought...

Expand your Comfort Zone
From birth a baby elephant is tied with a rope to a wooden post planted in the ground leaving it confined to very small space. Soon the elephant learns that he cannot break the rope. This space defined by the rope becomes the elephant’s comfort zone.
As the elephant grows up it could easily break the rope, but it does not even try because it was conditioned as a baby to think that it could not break free. As a result, the large elephant remains restricted and confined in a small space… Contd Below

“Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.” Carl Jung

On Life: Food For Thought...

Expand your Comfort Zone… Contd
This metaphor can be used to describe what happens to human beings as we become trapped in a comfort zone. The elephant can easily break the rope and we can easily leave our comfort zone. Just as the elephant’s space determines what it can do, our comfort zone determines what we are capable of achieving.
In order to expand our potential and succeed in life, we must expand our comfort zone into unfamiliar territory.
You will never realize what you are truly capable of achieving if you remain in your comfort zone. Via GreatMindsInspire

Great post Elizabeth. Whatever you shared through this post is so true. The photographs are excellent. It really difficult to define life in words, as it holds different meaning for different individuals. I just believe, life is very simple, we only need to keep it that simple. 🙂

    • 30/03/2012 1:35 am

Amen to that… We do need to keep it simple. TY! 🙂

Love that first quote about the parrot, and never tire of that story of the elephants. Thanks for this. Stu 🙂

“To think is easy. To act is difficult.” It’s true. We just do it now.

I agree with all that you have written. Truly if we can sweeten somebody elses pain its life well spent. Thanks for putting in words what I have felt always…

TY! Helen made a great point and I wish all sad people would remember it… :

Like all your food for thought — very nourishing! 🙂

  6. 30/03/2012 6:31 am

this is the quote I particularly like: “A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing” which is very similar to what my mother was wont to say, “do something….even if it’s wrong!” Half the time she was saying it in jest, but the underlying sentiment was always serious.
You’ve given us a great concept to think about as we go into the weekend, Elizabeth!
    🙂

TY and good to see you here again. It’s a great one for those of us with perfectionist tendencies… 🙂

This is great! I love the way you put the photos with the quotes and organized them to end with the Buddha quote. Your friend Nancy uses it too and I love it.
    Excellent. Aaaaaaaah! 😉

The limitations of “comfort zone” and “learned helplessness” can be such challenges….and so low key that they can be hard to notice…thanks for bringing attention to those ideas.
I saw a what I thought was a helpful quote on “enlighten daily” a few days ago: “live in such a way that if anyone should speak badly of you, no one would believe it.”
I’ve also been busy and not able to keep up with reading and pondering the many wonderful ideas in so many other people’s blogs. Ironically what I’ve been busy with has been 6 weeks of studying the dynamics of slowing the mind down and meditating a lot each day …resulting in a positive calmness and slowing down of the mind…..but I don’t quite know how to live balanced between calmness and connection…..so I need to expand that comfort zone to include new ways.

    • 31/03/2012 6:25 pm

I was wondering where you were… Best wishes on your studies and may you return refreshed and empowered… Your points are well taken and yes, we must be vigilant and keep up the effort to still the mind and grow… It is not easy. 🙂

    love some of those photos

I certainly believe in the power of our own expectations!

    • 31/03/2012 6:27 pm

I do too… and I’d love the lottery to connect with my expectations someday. 🙂

  13. 30/03/2012 11:40 am

Expanding my comfort zone–what a great goal for me over this blessed Palm Sunday weekend!

  14. 30/03/2012 12:07 pm

I love that Helen Keller quote – thanks.

😆 😆 You closing questions made me laugh. IN a way, my life IS on a billboard!

I do like the opening quotation. Luckily, I don’t have a parrot. 😀

    • 31/03/2012 6:31 pm

I was thinking of you when I wrote that one… 😆 Kidding!
Yes, I love that quote too… ’tis funny. 😉

I apologize for not visiting this week. Spring, soccer season, work–I am trying to catch up!

Hope all calms down for you this weekend… TY for stopping in. I’m way behind on comments and visits too… Slowly catching up. 🙂

  18. 30/03/2012 5:18 pm

This is so lovely! I so believe that what I think about sets my mind in action and the will seems to follow! One of my biggest frustrations these days is being with friends my age who are already talking about our “stage” as though life is nearly over. Goodness! I wouldn’t be able to get out of bed each day if I believed that. I plan for my life as though I have fifty more good years. LOL! I know that there are surprises every day and I don’t want to begin to limit myself at all! 🙂 Debra

    • 31/03/2012 6:36 pm

I had a good laugh over the word “stage” as I’ve never heard that one before. I’m with you on thinking positively and I don’t allow others to limit me either. 🙂

  19. 30/03/2012 6:50 pm

More like “Food for the Soul” I love your inspirational quotes!

  21. 31/03/2012 2:52 am

You always open with fabulous quotes. It’s my favourite part of your posts 🙂

Don’t you just love the brilliance in that quote…? It is perfect! TY! 🙂

  23. 31/03/2012 11:09 am

I enjoyed this post so much. I was particularly drawn to the quotes by Helen Keller and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. I view life more as a fine meal. I appreciate it.

  24. 31/03/2012 6:40 pm

Life is a fine meal for me too even when the tough moments come… TY for your feedback! 🙂

  25. 01/04/2012 6:08 am

Love the parrot quote! And those food pics look divine 🙂 Thanks for another inspirational post!

  26. 02/04/2012 9:23 am

I never compared my life to a meal or a date before. It is more like an ocean in that there is always movement and life, although the exterior may look either calm or storming, there is beauty underneath it all. Miriam

  27. 03/04/2012 10:25 pm

I like that Desmond Tutu and his quote. all the littles added up to overwhelm. Thanks for this post.

  28. 08/04/2012 3:09 pm

I’m enchanted by the concept of a sapphire star. Beautiful.

  29. 10/04/2012 6:34 am

Love the quotes and the story of the elephant, which I’d not heard before but is so true. We are products of our learned behavior. And we can change.
I might have written this here before — hopefully, I haven’t! I always think back to something a man in Barcelona told me years ago. I had to go to CS and when I saw the agent’s pockmarked face, it turned off my teenage mind, he looked ugly. I hoped I wasn’t going to be in his line but I knew I would be. When he signaled, I approached reluctantly. As I got to his window, he said something like, you can do whatever you want. I knew right away that it was a message for me and to this day, whenever I’ve feel unsure, I think of it.

My husband who takes cooking as hobby keeps on saying eating is a hobby of mine. I think food has a lot to do with daily life and it is always inspiring.
