Weekly Photo Challenge: Unusual…

16/03/2012

“Anything that excites me for any reason, I will photograph; not searching for unusual subject matter, but making the commonplace unusual.”  Edward Weston

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unusual… Changing terminal lights – The McNamara Tunnel, Detroit Airport

“I feel as though I have lived many lives, experienced the heights and depths of each and like the waves of the ocean, never known rest. Throughout the years, I have looked always for the unusual, for the wonderful, for the mysteries at the heart of life.”  Leni Riefenstahl

What is normal and what is unusual? In the world of one eyed fish, a two eyed fish is a freak… But is it? Remember the Twilight zone..? My normal could be your nuts! The photos and videos I share might tickle your fancy as unusual or not. I’ll understand. The first two pictures above were taken at the arrivals concourse at Ann Arbor Airport. CORRECTION: It is The McNamara Tunnel at Detroit airport. I adjusted the remaining two to show how the colors changed. What struck me as pretty unusual but equally stunning was the way the colors changed  as you walked through that tunnel; it felt like a psychedelic discotheque.

“Today is a most unusual day, because we have never lived it before; we will never live it again; it is the only day we have.”  William Arthur Ward

Traditional Irish Blessing: Happy St Patrick’s Day

“Afraid no, I wasn’t afraid but it was an unusual thing, it was an unusual feeling. It was an unusual atmosphere for me having grown up in this country and, and, and never seeing anything like that.”  Ralph Boston

These set of colorful lights appeared out of nowhere as I was driving home from a rural part of upstate NY. As I turned a corner, they were sitting there glowing in the woods in the dark night. I pulled over and took these shots; unusual for the area. The Irish Blessing  video is not unusual. (Thanks Francine!). I added it to celebrate St Paddy’s Day; now his story is a tad unusual. So, let’s just go ahead and celebrate all that we are; unique, unusual, unabashed, unadulterated, unapologetic… and then let’s stand tall in our St Patrick’s Day  regalia and blow off some steam… better yet, let’s get beyond the blarney. Slainté! (Irish for Here’s to your Health!) 😉

“If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary.” Jim Rohn

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unusual… The Octagon House

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unusual… The Octagon House/Armour-Stiner House

The Browser You Loved To Hate: IE

Today can be a healthy unusual day for you — and for others — if you take time to give someone a smile . . . to express a word of kindness . . . to lend a helping hand to someone in need . . . to write a note of gratitude . . . to give a word of encouragement to someone who is temporarily overcome with problems . . . to share a portion of your material possessions with others.” William Arthur Ward

This home, the Octagon House (Armour-Stiner House), is on the National Registry of Historic Places. It is a popular 8 sided, pink colored historic home in Irvington, NY. It is known locally as the Octagon House and I walk by it on my Aqueduct jaunts. Several years ago, I took a tour with the local Historical Society and was surprised to find the rooms were unusual in size and the ceilings somewhat low. The grounds are quite beautiful and the home is occupied. The video is just something to make you laugh. Enjoy! More below. 🙂

“Comedy is unusual people in real situations; farce is real people in unusual situations.”  Chuck Jones

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unusual… Floor length hair

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unusual… Nested Magazine Bowls

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unusual… Comic Con Character in Connecticut

“The Greeks already understood that there was more interest in portraying an unusual character than a usual character – that is the purpose of films and theatre.”  Isabelle Huppert

Okay, so the rest of  my unusual choices are an eclectic mix of photos. The first is my friend J with her floor length hair; pretty impressive. The next is a set of nested bowls made from magazine pages. They are quite sturdy and colorful. I got them at a fair. The last, for those familiar with Comic Con, is something my kids are into. Every year, they go to several of these gatherings where people dress up as comic characters.  Hope you enjoyed this! What are your thoughts? What photos depicting Unusual did you find? Was it easy/hard to find photos that made sense of your views on the Unusual? Were you drawn to certain types of photos for the prompt? Do share? Thank you! 🙂 😉

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. I listed several below. I appreciate TRACKBACKS/PINGBACKS & LIKES from fellow bloggers too! Check out how others interpreted the theme UNUSUAL below. ***

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Weekly Photo Challenge: Unusual. Share a picture that means UNUSUAL to you!

Positive Motivation Tip: Celebrate all that you are; unique, unusual, unabashed, unadulterated, unapologetic YOU! What is normal and what is unusual? In the world of one eyed fish, a two eyed fish is a freak… But is it? Remember the Twilight zone..? My normal could be your nuts! 🙂

What an UNUSUAL collection of unusual photos..and quotes… Crazy lights in both the terminal and the woods, unusual house… and the HAIR.. yikes that is long.. I would hate to have to try and keep the tangles out. How does she manage.

    • 17/03/2012 12:55 am

She manages with great difficulty. 😆 But she loves her hair and takes good care of it… The rest is … well… unusual. TY! Maggie and good to see you here. 🙂

  2. 17/03/2012 1:09 am

You’ve done it again! I love airports so those win for me but what an unusual collection and the lights in the woods are quite scary – UFOS’s! 🙂

    • 17/03/2012 1:14 am

Those lights in the woods were so freaking scary and they glowed… It was a snowy night too. If you noticed, there’s some snow on the ground… It was spooky. TY! I love airports too and I’ve never come across that type of light show. I loved it and took my pictures quickly … 🙂

  3. 17/03/2012 1:48 am

I like all octagon architecture – I’ve built one even for the birds at my window …

    • 17/03/2012 1:53 am

That is lovely. You should share a photo of your bird’s nest. TY! 😉

Your friend’s hair is amazing! I also loved the quote about either risking the unusual or settling for ordinary! Great perspective! 🙂 Debra

  9. 17/03/2012 3:54 am

oooh i loved so many of these—the idea of bowls made out of magazine pages intrigues me. i love the octagon buildings. i do have a question; do you accept blog awards? i don’t see any awards, i have a couple i would like to give you. but i don’t know if you accept them. i did not notice a statement saying you refuse them. please let me know~

  10. 17/03/2012 6:22 am

They are cool photo collections. That’s really unusual.

  11. 17/03/2012 6:33 am

    Great pictures and quotes….love it.

  12. 17/03/2012 6:56 am

You certainly complied with this weeks theme and challenge. The pictures are really unusual. My favourites are no doubt the ones from Ann Arbor terminal. Really surreal. And thanks for the quotes, I have made a notice of some of them, in particular Edward Weston and Jim Rohn.

  13. 17/03/2012 7:44 am

I like how you reiterate that what’s unusual to one may be perfectly normal to another. I think that’s important to remember. For example, I was at the State Legislature today lobbying for an animal welfare bill. I was struck with how many people there think that animal lovers are “nut jobs.” I wasn’t happy about that, but I used that knowledge to my advantage by using a “good ole’ boy” persona while talking with my elected officials.

These are the coolost photos. I loved them all but moreso the terminal lights. Go Ann Arbor! 🙂

I could say a little something about all these shots, but I’ll focus on that girl with the floor length hair. What a pain in the butt that must be. At one time I let my hair grow below my waistband, and even that was a major headache. I think if the young lady were to cut her hair, she would find it very liberating. But to each their own. 🙂

    • 17/03/2012 8:47 pm

J loves her hair long and the attention it brings keeps it all going strong. It is a lot of work she admits, but she’s up for the challenge. TY! 😉

  16. 17/03/2012 8:54 am

The inspiration bug bit you, for you were very inspire for the weeks challenge. It was very interesting, I loved the octagon house! Taking notes on that one for inspiration on a castle, but mine will be heptagon shape with a similar dome. Also those lights in the woods were stunning!!! You now I’m taking notes on that one, is great inspiration for story telling.

    • 17/03/2012 8:50 pm

Cool seems a gross understatement for this post, but it was the first word that came to mind. I would have to say that the terminal lights are my favorite photos 🙂

Love that house and your collection of unusual photos, Elizabeth.

  28. 17/03/2012 6:16 pm

Great photos, I have a particular fondness for airports, a meditation spot of sorts. You found some great quotes, and I love those lanterns too. Thanks for the Irish blessing as well, it’s good to remember. Blessings to you!

    • 17/03/2012 7:38 pm

Awesome! Glad to meet another soul who loves airports and the energy there that draws us inwards. TY! 🙂 Abundant Blessings to you too!

  31. 18/03/2012 2:35 am

As always beautiful collection of photographs and quote. Great job with this post Elizabeth. 🙂

  32. 18/03/2012 5:49 am

I like photos of weird and normal things. However, for some reason, I don’t like seeing pictures of people in biographies. The way that the pictures interrupt the stories annoys me. My goal would be to either have all the pictures be at the beginning or at the of the biography/autobiography.

    • 19/03/2012 3:08 pm

Very interesting observation… I wonder why? I love biographies and the photos have no impact for me. I go with the story and that’s it. TY for your insights and comment. 🙂

  33. 18/03/2012 7:19 am

    Loved your unusual choices!

  34. 18/03/2012 1:16 pm

    Gorgeous photos . . . the first seven. Quite a collection of the “unusual” . . . 🙂

    • 19/03/2012 3:08 pm

TY Cecelia, glad to see you again! I had fun with this one. 🙂

  35. 18/03/2012 4:51 pm

    Well done, E! 😀

  36. 19/03/2012 12:15 am

You inspired me today to search for the unusual and follow my heart. It’s easy to conform but going against the tide to follow a dream, a hope, a life long passion is hard. But it’s only when we battle the storm and claim our personal victory can we truly say, ” I lived my dream. I lived my life. I found my soul’s yearning.” Beautiful post as always. take care…

    • 19/03/2012 3:10 pm

TY for your inspired comment. I appreciate the generous feedback! 🙂
Hope you are enjoying your visit to the home country. 🙂

  37. 19/03/2012 7:15 am

I’d be dizzy if I were in those terminals!

    • 19/03/2012 3:11 pm

😆 I hope not! They are quite entertaining lights and, you know what, I forgot to add that they play soft music in that walkway too… 🙂 TY Leanne!
OMG! I forgot to add that fact to the post!!!!

  38. 19/03/2012 10:07 am

That’s true, unusual means different things to different people. The photos you took are amazing 🙂 And I love Ward’s quote – he’s so so right!
And happy belated St Patrick’s Day! I’ve been so so busy this week with projects that I missed this special Irish day! Thanks for sharing the beautiful music 🙂

    • 19/03/2012 3:12 pm

Aye aye. I augured you were busy with school work. TY for stopping in! 🙂

  39. 20/03/2012 10:19 pm

Wow , you have so much to share….best are the airport lights, haven’t seen before. Thanks

  40. 23/03/2012 10:36 am

Marvelous and joyful collection of photos to meet the “unusual” challenge. I am pleased to say I have visited the famous Octagon House. There is also one, never finished, in Natchez, MS! I am SO on board with that advice to be always willing to follow the unusual!
