Weekly Photo Challenge: Distorted…

02/03/2012

I had barely recovered from the satiation that the photo challenge on Indulge brought to my doorstep, when the new prompt – DISTORTED – arrived in my mailbox. What am I going to do? I complained to one of my kids, a philosopher and savvy photographer, and she looked at me and said, “Mom, the camera distorts reality every time it captures an image. We can distort that imagined reality further by twisting it into new forms and colors…” From the mouth of babes… WoW!

“It’s not only imagination, it’s the distortion of the vision. You suddenly think, This person is idealistic, this person is strong, this person has dreams, when you know better most of the time. You put what you want to see on people.” Olivier Martinez

After our little chat on what makes for a distorted photograph, I went looking for images in my files that were both distorted and colorful, and the results surprised me… Know where I found the best images? From concerts… Hmm mm. I also played around with some pictures I took of dinner at a Thai restaurant and a few other shots. I have added a bunch of distorted shots for your perusal above and below.

Perhaps because concerts represent the ultimate in imagined reality, it is easy to find and capture images of fantasy and exaggerated reality at them. What with all the lights, sounds and pyrotechnics, it is not surprising that they can offer contorted and fantastical images of the stars on stage… and we, the audience, join them in that fantasy world… albeit for a moment. There’s more below. 😉

“It’s essential to tell the truth at all times. This will reduce life’s pain. Lying distorts reality. All forms of distorted thinking must be corrected.” John Bradshaw

Weekly Photo Challenge: Distorted... More of same...

Whether we choose to view the world through a distorted lens or not is up to us. We can choose to live with the unfettered truth or keep our rose tinted glasses on… While it makes for colorful dishes and psychedelic drinks, it won’t change the facts. At the end of the day, reality bites back; especially when we least expect it and when we are not looking… Enjoy the madness.
What are your thoughts? What photos depicting distorted did you find? Was it easy/hard to find photos that made sense of your views on distorted? Were you drawn to certain types of photos for the prompt? Do share? Thank you! 🙂 😉

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. I listed several below. I appreciate TRACKBACKS/PINGBACKS & LIKES from fellow bloggers too! Check out how others interpreted the theme DISTORTED below. ***

Elizabeth, I struggle to maintain my website as it is, without taking on extra challenges! I did the postaday last year, I’m not taking on extra things this year. I just enjoy the work of others!

“Lying distorts reality…” – every day, listening to the statements of some politicians, I have this experience …

    • 03/03/2012 6:54 am

I hear you and I’m getting an earful with the primaries here in the USA too… endless distortions. Yikes! 😉

  7. 03/03/2012 8:42 am

Thank you and while I was here I read as much of your blog as possible! I loved the recent post on top about the flow of traffic to your blog and your first blog post! Funny isn’t it .. I love looking back at my first ones as well! I probably say too much about family as its for my family when I am dead! My daughter promises faithfully she will be re-posting my posts after I am dead and so I press on with her gorgeous face in mind! Hoping that I always will leave her with my most personal thoughts on a range of subjects. I will be with her through this medium for a long while after I am pushing the daisies up!

What keeps me happy and excited during this ugly time on earth is the thought that it will change as it always does! However, think at times we may not like the change that is coming. I have always been a frugal person having been reared by someone who went through the great depression of the thirties last century. That in itself was an experience. My great aunty is who reared me and she was tough. But I know things that many other people my age just don’t know. I always think about whether or not it is good for me and the world. I also water a lot of stuff down, ie the bodywash I use isnt a cheap one, I prefer to use this one but I also feel that as consumers we have been directed to consume and consume we do. I take that body wash and I dilute it ten times! It is fine and does the job marvellously but lasts ten times as long! now that comes to a saving or around $80.00 because ten containers of body wash would cost that much but one container costs $8.00. So I see there are a lot of things like this. We are hoodwinked so much of the time. I use Bi carbonate of soda and vinegar a lot! I buy in bulk wherever possible when stuff is cheaper! I buy enough dry goods for three months at a time and that saves me the petrol in going to get this stuff which would be in the vicinity of $200.00 worth of petrol. I do that job for $20.00 , saving $180.00 doing this. I could go on and on and on! I grow a lot of stuff myself in my back yard. Herbs and Garlic and the vegetables that are the most expensive to buy. Seeds are still relatively cheap. I was taught not to waste anything. Making an extra meal from practically nothing is my forte. Thankyou for you charming blog it was a top read! I also look at the sun at dawn, its an ancient practice called sungazing and it can be dangerous to do it any other time except dawn and at sunset when the UV is at 0. I believe this has many health benefits as I believe the large pharmaceutical companies know of but prefer us to not know and to continue with our trillion dollar habit of taking medication. I feel that the sun cleanses the blood and stops one from feeling an intense hunger. For years I joked I was solar powered. Fact is I was so absolutely correct! THANKS AGAIN.

Whoa Mezza! TY for your feedback… I asked for it and got plenty back. Thanks for taking the time to stop in and share. Times are hard and we all are feeling the pinch and overwhelm… It helps to turn to what has always strengthened us… faith and art and more. Have a blessed week ahead. 😉

  12. 03/03/2012 5:06 pm

Interesting take on the theme, E!

I prefer to see the “what is” as it is but (as part of life’s paradox) that tends to make my life rosier because I’m accepting of things as they are . . . instead of insisting they change to suit me.

    • 07/03/2012 7:22 pm

TY! This challenge was a tad difficult because I didn’t think I had any distorted photos. I don’t mind the rosier picture now and then, keeps me interested. 🙂

  13. 03/03/2012 6:01 pm

Very cool photos! My favourite is the one with Janet Jackson where her hair is over her face. It looks like her head is on backwards 🙂

    • 07/03/2012 7:24 pm

I was surprised when I looked in my file and noticed it… It is a little scary but works for the challenge. TY! 🙂

  14. 03/03/2012 10:25 pm

Wow… jaw dropping in awe of your talent

    • 07/03/2012 7:28 pm

Excellent photographs Eliz! I found this theme challenging. You’ve made it appear simple 🙂

    • 07/03/2012 7:40 pm

I found it challenging too and, when I look at all the photos, a couple of them are a bit of a stretch for the theme… but whatever. TY for your feedback! 🙂

  25. 07/03/2012 1:37 am

    Great collection of distorted images…
