The Oscars: The 84th Academy Awards Are Upon Us...
For starters, Billy Crystal, the host with the most, will keep us watching and laughing Sunday night. It seems like only yesterday when we celebrated the winners and losers of the 83rd Oscar awards… right?Β Anyway, like an endless party with props and power brokers, we are at it again as we celebrate the 84th Oscars/Academy Awards with some of the usual suspects and many new nominees. If you have spent any time at the movies this year, you know that we have seen some pretty good stuff and our share of fluff. While I might not have a bookie in Las Vegas, I’d like to toss my hat in the proverbial prediction ring and guess who would walk away with that handsome though stiff and very dead golden boy. Here are some of the top nominees, at least the ones I wait for…(I highlighted my predicted winners). Pick your preference or poison, and we’ll check in Sunday night to count the wins and losses. The Oscars: The 84th Academy Awards Are Upon Us...
An Academy Award is an award bestowed by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS)[1] to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, and writers. The Oscar statuette is officially named the Academy Award of Merit and is one of nine types of Academy Awards. Wikipedia
Since the first set of Oscars were handed out in 1929, the Academy Awards have been a captivating event; drawing viewers and prognosticators from around the world. Quite frankly, there are some in the industry who try to downplay the power and prestige an Oscar bestows on an actor and movie, and would like to see the Oscars not hold our collective attention as the final word… However, it continues to pride itself as the ultimate arbiter of what we should watch (thankfully not what we should wear) in as many categories as possible. I don’t remember my first Oscar award viewing; I wasn’t fed a rich diet of TV when I was growing up, and celebrities and drama queens didn’t play a huge role in my life… Let’s just say they were not firmly entrenched in my mind or on my radar. With time, naturally, I adapted and now I’m gungho about the Oscars… I watch, even when they piss me off by choosing someone I didn’t expect to win…

The grand show on Sunday will be filled with glitz and glamor, slick one liners from Billy, acceptance speeches (both brilliant and banal), fashion firsts and faux pas, and many of us will be glued to our TV sets waiting to see our favorites win. One important event that often takes place well before Oscar night is the special recognition/honorary awards event. Last November, James Earl Jones and Dick Smith received the Academy Honorary Award, and Ms Oprah Winfrey got the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her impressive contributions to desperate and needy causes around the globe. I don’t know if you’d be watching on Sunday, I will. Enjoy the show and may the best ones win… pass the popcorn will you? π

One of my favorite nights of the year. I’ll be in front of my TV starting with the E! Red Carpet show and up late till the end of the show. I’m so excited Billy Crystal is back. He is the best host.

For a couple years, one of my Movie Girl friends would have an Oscar party. We had to see all the nominees and vote for the ones we liked. Life took over and for the first time ever, I’ve only seen one of the film nominated, Midnight in Paris. I’ll be sure to watch at least some of it tonight. Thanks for the scorecard, Elizabeth!
Great lists! Tonight when I have a couple of friends over to watch, I will pull up your post for us to follow. It’s the best list I’ve seen! I know the Awards are a strange brew if put up against the context of real life, but let’s face it! I think we have plenty of real life to keep us focused and grounded in what’s real! I’m going to enjoy some good old escapism this afternoon and evening, some food I probably will regret tomorrow and some champagne, and just have fun! We used to go to the movies a lot but the past few years we stopped. I see the kiddie movies with my grandsons but we prefer watching at home without the hassle and expense for the most part. I still love the spectacle of the Oscar show and LOVE Billy Crystal, so I’ll be watching.

I love watching the Oscars, especially with Billy Crystal. I’m guessing the Artist will win big again, and Viola Davis from the help, but you never know. I’ll be watching with you!
I love movies and don’t watch enough lately, but I’m going with Midnight in Paris for best picture (mainly because I thought it was great), Viola Davis, best actress (because I thought she did an incredible job), George Clooney, best actor ( I thought he did a darn good job on this), Woody Allen, best director (I thought the acting and plot were brilliant)…and I’ll just watch what happens with all the others.
Normally, Dapper G and I race around to the movies to view all the nominated films but missed so many of them this year. However, I’ll log onto Netflix and tick them off. I look forward to tonight–the glitz, the glamour and Billy Crystal! ps Love your motivating tip.

Man, The Artist totally racked up! Being from Jackson, MS and having known the Stockett family personally, I was so very glad Octavia Spencer won for best support actress. The Descendants was another award receiver I am glad about.
