Music: Dark Nights & Morning Lights…

24/02/2012

“There is pleasure in the pathless woods, there is rapture in the lonely shore, there is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar; I love not Man the less, but Nature more.” Lord Byron

Music: Dark Nights & Morning Lights... We need both.

Truman / David Falzone – Morning Light

Music fills many gaps and spaces in our hearts; from our lonely nights to our glorious moments in day light. We reach for music to set the mood or heal our wounds. What most of us appreciate about music is that it rises above our ways of expressing emotion and carries us directly to the source. Music soothes on a lonely night and in the solitude of an early morning.

“Language… has created the word “loneliness” to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word “solitude” to express the glory of being alone.” Paul Tillich

The song above is a haunting one that speaks to the deep longing one has for the divine; especially when alone in the darkest hour of our lives. According to Wikipedia, it is “one of 27 samples of music included on the Voyager Golden Record, launched into space in 1977 to represent the diversity of life on Earth. “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground” was chosen as the human expression of loneliness.” More below 😉

“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.”  Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Cherokee Morning Song – Walela (A beautiful Native American song)

Do you reach for music when you feel lonely? are alone? Some of us love to listen to music to set our day and others prefer the company of music at the end of the day or in a nightclub setting. Either way, we find our connections, perhaps a sense of balance through our musical choices and that makes all the difference. Enjoy the music selection and offer me any that cover the theme of darkness and light. I like this quote by Henry Rollins as a counterpoint to the sadder view of loneliness. “Loneliness adds beauty to life. It puts a special burn on sunsets and makes night air smell better.” Have a musical weekend!
What about you? What are your thoughts? What music do you prefer when feeling down? What helps you to see the light? Do you have special happy songs? Do share! Thank you. 🙂
Positive Motivation Tip: Music lights up the night and brightens up our day; lonely or happy, we can find our song.

That Paul Tillich quote is perfect. Absolutely perfect.

Sometimes I listen to intensely sad music when I’m feeling down. There’s catharsis in release through someone else’s musical story. Other times, I try to reject the sadness with music, jamming to something loud, discordant music.

I spent a long time here this morning, just soaking in the music and the beauty and the words. Thank you from my heart for this post.

Thanks for reminding me about the Voyager 1-2 Earth Time Capsules! I’d totally forgotten about NASA sending music and pictures into space!

I understand how Willie Johnson’s song represents loneliness and despair. Thanks for sharing Eliz.

I love music all the time. When I am sad I often find release in music. There is no specific song but rather a song that I feel the words speak to me then that’s the song. It also depends on the cause of the sadness. There’s songs for different people that help to release the sadness.

When I am happy I love most types of music, I just have to be able to sing along!

I love the Blind Willie Johnson, a real lament. But is it loneliness he is singing about? I play music when I am alone – not lonely…

Music is an important part of my life. I studied piano, taught, and I have always listened to and participated in musical settings–choirs, small groups, orchestra. Music has always been important to me and often matched my mood! But I did go through a few years (long time ago now) when I was going through some very emotional times and I had to be careful what I listened to. Music is about emotions, and the “wrong” songs could just set me off and make life harder! It was quite an interesting personal music lab I was conducting. Debra

I’ve written a lot about Blind Willie Johnson and I’m very glad that you mention him in your collection; but really new for me: The Cherokee Morning Song – wonderful, thanks for that link!

    Hello,
Again, enjoyed your post, photos, & music. I enjoy listening to contemporary gospel music. When I listen to it I feel: energized, inspired, encouraged, and motivated. I feel that I can overcome any and all challenges, situations, and circumstances that I may encountered. I am uplifted and feel so positive about life through this music I realize that II amneveralonanAKKthat.Aeverything w

Ahhh, music – a universal language! I reach for music for all different reasons. It can be very relaxing.

Music is mood-enhancing. Funny but I match music to my moods–if I’m sad–I listen to sad music. Like the Cherokee morning song lots.

Love what Blind Willie does with his guitar — he doesn’t even have to add words. Music is a huge part of my life, I play it when I’m happy, sad and everything in between. Great post, Elizabeth!

Where to start on this wonderfully rich topic when you have given us Goethe and Blind Willie Johnson for starters? I have friends who never listen to music, for whom it is merely irritating noise whereas I find it impossible to imagine life without it. Lovely post!

“Loneliness adds beauty to life. It puts a special burn on sunsets and makes night air smell better.”–you TELL it, Henry Rollins! This is exactly how my elders before me and I before my children and them before their children view so-called loneliness! It is a gift and should be wallowed in and sung in and dreamed in and meditated in. Then we reach a state of solitude at one with the Creator and His Universe!

Because my work usually has me on sensory overload, I cherish my alone time. On my day off…I will spend the entire day surrounded by silence or music…I cherish this time.
