A popular saying using the word Down is “What goes up must come down…” I thought of that a lot as I gathered my pictures for this challenge. I love looking up and around me; not so much looking down unless a boulder is in the way. I was nicely surprised by the pictures I found in my files, and also reminded that our fascination with heights often includes a desire to capture what we see below. For this Challenge, I’ve added pictures I took from the top of some pretty tall buildings and when possible, I have added pictures of the buildings to give a sense of the distance. At 850 feet (259 m) tall, the 70-story GE building is the 10th tallest building in New York City and the 33rd tallest in the United States.

I took my picture of the Olympic Village from the top of the Olympiaturm tower on a clear fall day and could see for miles in Munich. What I remember about this structure was how exposed I felt and how narrow parts of it felt. It is a magnificent structure… The Olympiaturm in Olympiapark, Munich has an overall height of 291 m (955 ft) and a weight of 52,500 tons.

Taking the elevator to the top of Tokyo Tower was pretty scary because, at 1,091 ft tall, you feel the distance. About halfway through, I could feel the air thinning and my head spinning. The view from the topmost part was stunning. One thing I remember from that experience and of other very tall buildings is that you are aware of the distance to the ground, the shift in air and the height above. It is like touching the heavens… exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. At 332.5 meters (1,091 ft), Tokyo Tower is the second tallest artificial structure in Japan.

I was excited about my visit to the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington. Everyone I met in Seattle kept telling me to go and it was pretty impressive too. The ride to the top wasn’t unnerving as the guides were friendly and chatty. The Space Needle is 605 feet (184 m) high at its highest point and 138 feet (42 m) wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons.

The original 7 WTC building was destroyed on 9/11 and was 47 stories tall. This new building is 52 stories tall, making it the 29th tallest in New York. I was in the building for an event on the top floor. As is the case with tall buildings, we truly get a bird’s eye view of our surroundings and so I took several pictures that day. It was sad to look down to the site and imagine what was… It was comforting to look around and appreciate what remains; what is left of the Manhattan skyline.

The photo of the Space Needle is my favorite. But you wouldn’t get me standing at the top of it. I’m afraid of heights. I get scared when I stand ten feet above ground. I always feel the need to close my eyes and breath. :p

For someone who is afraid of heights, I sure do go up tall buildings… Truth is that I do it to overcome my fear of falling. Now you know why I seek out tall buildings to visit when I travel or when I’m local. 😉

There’s something about the Manhattan skyline,whenever I’m lucky enough to visit, I never tire of taking photos of it.

The cathedral is the one I like best,so unusual!
It is my favorite too… I remember feeling a bit sick as I leaned over the railing to shoot it. A group of us went on a special tour of architectural structures in Manhattan and that is why we were allowed on the roof. It is not open to the public. There is a roof garden on a lower level that is open but not this part. TY! 😉

I’m just permanently behind. When you visit you will discover I bit the bullet in the end and deleted 200 notification emails. There was no way I was going to catch up. I had to accept reality!
I might have to do same even though the thought pains me. Another decision might be to like all the 500+ posts in my box and then start commenting with new ones… Phew!
Wow beautiful photos! The buildings are taller and taller every year and the only way to look down is to be on top of one of them 😛
Isn’t that something? In countries with overcrowding, even taller buildings are going up. One day, we’ll need oxygen masks to get up to our 3500th floor apartments. 🙂
Some of your shots are amazing. What is really amazing is how man can cram so much concrete into one city block. Wow! I don’t know how people live and work that close together. To each their own, I guess. Give me those country roads any day. I do however, enjoy the textures of the buildings against each other. They do make for interesting photographs as you have proven with this post.
