Weekly Photo Challenge: DOWN…

22/02/2012

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Walt Disney

Weekly Photo Challenge: DOWN... St Patrick's Cathedral - Taken from rooftop of GE Building at 30 Rockefeller Plaza ("30 Rock") - Rockefeller Center

Weekly Photo Challenge: DOWN... GE Building... (tallest in the middle)

“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.” Steve Jobs

A popular saying using the word Down is “What goes up must come down…” I thought of that a lot as I gathered my pictures for this challenge. I love looking up and around me; not so much looking down unless a boulder is in the way. I was nicely surprised by the pictures I found in my files, and also reminded that our fascination with heights often includes a desire to capture what we see below. For this Challenge, I’ve added pictures I took from the top of some pretty tall buildings and when possible, I have added pictures of the buildings to give a sense of the distance. At 850 feet (259 m) tall, the 70-story GE building is the 10th tallest building in New York City and the 33rd tallest in the United States.

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning.” Maya Angelou

Weekly Photo Challenge: DOWN... Olympiaturm

The Alan Parsons ProjectWhat Goes Up

Alan Parsons Project » What Goes Up…  via LyricsDomain
What goes up must come down.
What must rise must fall…
And what goes on in your life
Is writing on the wall!
If all things must fall,
Why build a miracle at all?
If all things must pass,
Even a miracle won’t last… Contd

I took my picture of the Olympic Village from the top of the Olympiaturm tower on a clear fall day and could see for miles in Munich. What I remember about this structure was how exposed I felt and how narrow parts of it felt. It is a magnificent structure… The Olympiaturm in Olympiapark, Munich has an overall height of 291 m (955 ft) and a weight of 52,500 tons.

All our words are but crumbs that fall down from the feast of the mind.” Khalil Gibran

Weekly Photo Challenge: DOWN... Looking down from Top of Tokyo Tower

Weekly Photo Challenge: DOWN... Tokyo - Looking down from Top of Tokyo Tower

Weekly Photo Challenge: DOWN... Tokyo Tower

What goes up must come down.
What must stand alone?
And what goes on in your mind
Is turning into stone!
If all things must fall
Why build a miracle at all?
If all things must pass,
Even a pyramid won’t last… Contd

Taking the elevator to the top of Tokyo Tower was pretty scary because, at 1,091 ft tall, you feel the distance.  About halfway through, I could feel the air thinning and my head spinning. The view from the topmost part was stunning. One thing I remember from that experience and of other very tall buildings is that you are aware of the distance to the ground, the shift in air and the height above. It is like touching the heavens… exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. At 332.5 meters (1,091 ft), Tokyo Tower is the second tallest artificial structure in Japan.

“On the plains of hesitation lie the blackened bones of countless millions who at the dawn of victory lay down to rest, and in resting died.” Adlai E. Stevenson

Weekly Photo Challenge: DOWN... Seattle - Taken from Top of The Space Needle

Weekly Photo Challenge: DOWN... Seattle too - Taken from Top of The Space Needle

Weekly Photo Challenge: DOWN... The Space Needle, Seattle

How can you be so sure?
How do you know what the end will endure?
How can you be so sure
That the wonders you’ve made in your life
Will be seen
By the millions who’ll follow to visit the site
Of your dream? Contd

I was excited about my visit to the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington. Everyone I met in Seattle kept telling me to go and it was pretty impressive too. The ride to the top wasn’t unnerving as the guides were friendly and chatty. The Space Needle is 605 feet (184 m) high at its highest point and 138 feet (42 m) wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons.

“A true friend never gets in your way unless you happen to be going down.” Arnold H. Glasow

Weekly Photo Challenge: DOWN... Looking down on Amsterdam - Taken as we approached airport

Weekly Photo Challenge: DOWN... Another view from a plane... approaching the airport in Seattle.

What goes up must come down…
What goes ’round must come ’round…
What’s been lost must be found…

The original 7 WTC building was destroyed on 9/11 and was 47 stories tall. This new building is 52 stories tall, making it the 29th tallest in New York. I was in the building for an event on the top floor. As is the case with tall buildings, we truly get a bird’s eye view of our surroundings and so I took several pictures that day. It was sad to look down to the site and imagine what was… It was comforting to look around and appreciate what remains; what is left of the Manhattan skyline.

What are your thoughts? What photos depicting DOWN did you find? Was it easy/hard to find photos that made sense of your views on DOWN? Were you drawn to certain types of photos for the prompt? Do share? Thank you! 🙂 😉

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. I listed several below. Check out how others interpreted the theme DOWN below. ***

What an amazing , inspiring, beautiful set of photos about “down.” It’s like I went into a one thrilling , spectacular sky ride with words that uplifts the spirit. This one sounded so sweet, ““A true friend never gets in your way unless you happen to be going down.” true friends catch you when you fall, stay with you when everyone scattered to oblivion when time gets tough. Thank God for true , trusted, loyal friends…have a blessed day …

Love your “down” collection, Elizabeth. Not familiar with this song by the Allan Parsons Project. As I read the first line of the lyrics, what came to mind was Spinning Wheel by Blood, Sweat & Tears. It starts out exactly the same way, What goes up must come down. Had to Google it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi9sLkyhhlE

Remarkable photos Elizabeth! I don’t think I could have taken the photo looking down through the glass floor of Tokyo Tower. Gorgeous entry into the challenge!

    • 25/02/2012 1:59 am

TY and I bet you’d have captured a much better shot form that glass floor. I think I took more shots but need to find the disk. 🙂

I so enjoy and am inspired by the quotes you use in your daily posts. Many times I will use one as my status on Facebook; I hope you don’t mind 🙂 I love to encourage people with something each day or a few times a day. I hope that the quotes I post help people to pause…and give thanks…and pass on the blessing!

I’m so glad that I stumbled upon your beautiful blog. It’s always nice to know that there are people out there who seize the day, and look at the good side of life. 🙂

You are a very good photographer, and it seems to me that you love to travel a lot! 😀

The photo of the Space Needle is my favorite. But you wouldn’t get me standing at the top of it. I’m afraid of heights. I get scared when I stand ten feet above ground. I always feel the need to close my eyes and breath. :p

I hope you post again soon! Cheers!

Steve Jobs is a true visionary!

    • 25/02/2012 1:54 am

Yes, he was the visionary and I love the quote… 🙂 TY!

  24. 24/02/2012 4:22 am

I loved the Gibran quote. I’m going to carry that one around with me! I loved your thoughts on perspective! It brings to mind that some of those vantage points required a little “faith” and boldness to acquire…not so sure I’d like to go that high, actually, but then when you find the reward of the view, it is worth it. There’s a life lesson in that! I do admire the travel, Elizabeth! Debra

    • 25/02/2012 1:51 am

      TY Debra!
For someone who is afraid of heights, I sure do go up tall buildings… Truth is that I do it to overcome my fear of falling. Now you know why I seek out tall buildings to visit when I travel or when I’m local. 😉

  25. 24/02/2012 6:23 am

Nice collection. I’m glad that you post about Tokyo tower.

    • 25/02/2012 1:49 am

TY Cocomino! I knew you would approve. Have you visited it recently? 🙂

      • 25/02/2012 2:33 am

Recently I didn’t go to the tower but when I was a child, I visited there for some times.

    • 25/02/2012 8:44 pm

Oh cool! I took my kids and they were less scared than me. 😆

  26. 24/02/2012 11:31 am

There’s something about the Manhattan skyline, whenever I’m lucky enough to visit, I never tire of taking photos of it.

    • 25/02/2012 1:48 am

Yes, the skyline is magnificent. I would love to get some night shot someday soon. TY! 🙂

  27. 24/02/2012 11:53 am

Great collection. disturbs my vertigo 🙂 St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the GE building — I really like the framing and perspectives of these two.
And thanks so much for your LIKES and comments on my blog. keep inspiring!

    • 25/02/2012 1:47 am

TY and my vertigo is in over drive from all the blog posts I’ve seen on the topic. 😆

  28. 24/02/2012 12:39 pm

The cathedral is the one I like best,so unusual!

    • 25/02/2012 1:46 am

It is my favorite too… I remember feeling a bit sick as I leaned over the railing to shoot it. A group of us went on a special tour of architectural structures in Manhattan and that is why we were allowed on the roof. It is not open to the public. There is a roof garden on a lower level that is open but not this part. TY! 😉

      • 25/02/2012 10:43 pm

I’m just permanently behind. When you visit you will discover I bit the bullet in the end and deleted 200 notification emails. There was no way I was going to catch up. I had to accept reality!

      • 25/02/2012 11:03 pm

I might have to do same even though the thought pains me. Another decision might be to like all the 500+ posts in my box and then start commenting with new ones… Phew!

  32. 25/02/2012 5:29 am

Wow beautiful photos! The buildings are taller and taller every year and the only way to look down is to be on top of one of them 😛

    • 25/02/2012 8:51 pm

Isn’t that something? In countries with overcrowding, even taller buildings are going up. One day, we’ll need oxygen masks to get up to our 3500th floor apartments. 🙂

  33. 25/02/2012 7:38 pm

Some of your shots are amazing. What is really amazing is how man can cram so much concrete into one city block. Wow! I don’t know how people live and work that close together. To each their own, I guess. Give me those country roads any day. I do however, enjoy the textures of the buildings against each other. They do make for interesting photographs as you have proven with this post.

    • 25/02/2012 8:53 pm

I’m with you on that… I love the country and living close to the ground too. TY! 🙂
