Inspiration: I Wish I Could…

21/02/2012

“If I were to wish for anything, I should not wish for wealth and power, but for the passionate sense of potential — for the eye which, ever young and ardent, sees the possible. Pleasure disappoints; possibility never.” Soren Kierkegaard

I wish I could…
When I read this week’s prompts from MamaKat’s Writers Workshop, the fourth one caught my eye; I wish I could… Straight away, all kinds of ideas started popping into my head inviting me to add them to my wishful thinking list. It was quite exhausting as there is so much that calls our attention of late. If we’ve paid attention to events around the world, we’d know that there isn’t a surfeit of remedies for the pain and suffering in the world.

Sure, the sages advice us to be at peace with conditions as life is temporary. I also know that many courageous people are doing their best to overcome, to find innovative ways to cope with poverty, ill-health, famine, unemployment, depression, water and food shortages, debt … and you get the picture of pain and, perhaps, possibility. Yet, the list is endless and, somehow, we are all touched by it; directly or indirectly. “The world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming it.” Helen Keller  I wish I could bring an end to pain and suffering…

“Life affords no higher pleasure than that of surmounting difficulties, passing from one step of success to another, forming new wishes and seeing them gratified.” Samuel Johnson

When I think back to some of the happiest times in my life, what stands out are not just the most abundant years or the years of bountiful activity. What truly stands out are the years spent connecting with nature on the family farm, connecting with friends, family and my childhood playmates, and enjoying the simplest things in life. I was transported back to some of those carefree, happy days when I read a post by, fellow blogger, Sony Fugaban of Yobynos.

Sony had a picture of a cashew fruit and, with lightening speed, I was transported back home, climbing fruit trees, reaching for guava, cashew fruit, sour sop, ube (native pear), udara (star apple), and a host of  other exotic fruits that I don’t have access to here in the US. It made me wistful; even a tad sad that life has gotten so complicated. Then a thought came: Hold onto your wishes and your dreams for each one is a blessing that helps you plant a seed. “Always leave something to wish for; otherwise you will be miserable from your very happiness.” Baltasar Gracian. I wish I could reconnect with that place where fruits were abundant and free… I wish I could plant a banyan tree so all can have some rest and a place to eat. More below.  😉

“Seek not that the things which happen should happen as you wish; but wish the things which happen to be as they are, and you will have a tranquil flow of life” Epictetus

Recently, in Business Insider, I read about another major painting that will be coming up for auction through Sotheby’s next month. Apparently, it is one of only four originals of Edvard Munch‘s The Scream. This one is noted for its vibrancy and deep hues, and there is much excitement in the art world that it would probably fetch millions. I love art and pay attention to the whirlwind world of extravagant collections and collectors. This one definitely caught my attention.

Sometimes, I imagine how exciting it would be to own an original master, to be in the middle of a bidding frenzy and capture some of that excitement. I’ve attended auctions and I get the psychology of it all… Yes, it’s exhilarating and perhaps addictive… but I digress. “The fact is that people are good, if only their fundamental wishes are satisfied, their wish for affection and security. Give people affection and security, and they will give affection and be secure in their feelings and their behavior.” Abraham Maslow. Yes, I wish I could own Edvard Munch’s The Scream or Wassily Kandinsky’s Composition VII, and use the sale proceeds to fund scholarships and more for children around the world who hurt… I wish I could do more for humanity.
♥What are your thoughts? Do you have a heartfelt wish to share? What do you do with disappointments? If you could have a genie grant a few wishes, what would they be? Do share! ♥Happy ♥Wishful ♥Thinking ♥To ♥You! 🙂 Thank you. 😉

I’m not one for ‘I wish I could’. If it is physically possible, then we should try to make it possible for ourselves. If it is not possible, then what’s the point of wasting our time wishing?

I’m one with you on that wish. See, I lived in the province for 12 years and we also have plenty of fruit bearing tree in our backyard. I hope I can be able to realize that plan of settling in the country soon. I just need to finish something here in the metropolis.

Thanks for the quotes. My aching wish was somehow neutralized.

I do not wish to own expensive paintings, have no space to plant a tree.
Beside affection and security I only wish to be open for surprises

What a lovely post. I have so many wishes . . . I wish I could express them clearly.

Between the WISH and the THING . . . life lies waiting. 😀

    Hello,
What a great, inspiring, thoughtful, and encouraging post. I have many wishes; some that I may be able to make a reality; many that take a multitude of persons to make them a reality; some that will only come true in time with the help of God.
I will continue to make the ones come true that I can and pray for the others to occur in God’s time, according to His plans.
Thanks for the thoughts and inspiration.
    ShoutSweetie.

Sharing with joy and happiness and owning the beauty passing between you and others–hallelujah! Wondrous way to start Lent. Bless you! Fabulous artwork here. My jaw is still on the ground from looking at the magical banyan trees!

Elizabeth, thank you for lifting the spirit of our fellow blogger in Yobynos.

Wishes are important for our dreams and for transcending our lives into something more than a struggle. We all have our struggles – on various levels. And I think they are there to make us grow. Unfortunately there is much despair, poverty and hardship in the world, but we – who are in a position to make a difference – ought not to give up the idea of doing something – whatever little contribution it is – to make the world a better place.

Lovely post. Thoughtful words, beautiful images and the quotes you chose to share are wonderful.

I think I have reached a stage in my life where to keep a peaceful spirit I simply ask God to show me what I can do, and to pray for the connectedness of others to add to that strength and multiply the effect. There is so much need, of that I am certain. You keep us all asking the right questions, I believe, Elizabeth! Good for you! Debra

I’m not a “wish I could” person. Just trying to make best of the here and now! Love the Banyan tree photo.

  15. 22/02/2012 4:36 pm

I love the whimsical magical feeling of the banyan tree.

You’re wish says so much about you and your genuine good inner self. Your soul radiates such beauty, Elizabeth.

As for me? I think you know. I wish I could take away the world’s disabilities and the prejudices that flow from them. 🙂

As I saw the photo of the cashew, I’m realized that I haven’t seen one in ages! Wish I could bottle and send you some soursop, guavas, june plums, starfruits, guineps, custard apples, cherries, etc. A few days ago, I juiced june plums, starfruits, passionfruit and ginger. Was delicious!

Anyway, there’s so much work to be done in the world, sometimes I feel overwhelmed. But then I remember a friend told me that I should grow where I’m planted.

What kind of fruit is that in the top photo?

  19. 10/03/2012 1:35 pm

Hi Eliz! I’m also curious about the first fruit . . . almost looks like papaya. Hmmn. My current wish is either to have awesome computer skills to know how to fix on-line problems . . . like Error 324!
    🙂
