“If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work.” Thich Nhat Hanh

Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti…
May all find peace within and without
Wherever we look, May peace follow us there
Whatever we do, May peace meet us there…

I am coming a tad late to the Peaceful Photo Challenge as I postponed it yesterday for the important event on SOPA/PIPA Peace is an active not a static endeavor and everyday, people speak up, standup, sacrifice their comfort, and even die for the sake of peace… Although we seek solace in peaceful settings, those places cannot protect us if the world we step away from, albeit temporarily, is in chaos. ओम्, Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti… ॐ

“There’s something about the water – that solitary kind of peaceful feeling. You’re on Earth but not quite.”  John C. Reilly

I’ve written so much about the Old Croton Aqueduct and Scenic Hudson Park that I’ve ignored the fact that there are tons of beautiful trails, parks, ponds and pathways in my area. All of these wonderfully serene places offer us a way to retreat, regroup and refresh.

“Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue.” Gautama Buddha

The resting deer and sleeping Tangy, our family cat, epitomized “Peaceful” quite well. We are at our most peaceful when we cross the path from a state of alertness to a state of rest and sleep.

“Surfing soothes me, it’s always been a kind of Zen experience for me. The ocean is so magnificent, peaceful, and awesome. The rest of the world disappears for me when I’m on a wave.” Paul Walker

Water is both cleansing and soothing… When I think of peacefulness, the image of  a vast yet steady ocean rises within me. But peace must come from within, for even the ocean froths and roils, ebbs and flows, saddens us with tsunamis.

“Often, before returning home, I would take a long and roundabout way and pass by the peaceful ramparts from where I had glimpses of other provinces, and a sight of the distant country.”  Pierre Loti

In times of change, conflict, and even catastrophe, we pause to formulate a course of action… Take a seat for a while, you haven’t missed a thing. The fruits of your cumulative actions await you. Seek Peaceful options and solutions. More below.

Whenever possible, return to the primitive (nature) and the peaceful… There is much we can learn from the sights and sounds in nature. When we stop to look, listen and learn from what we see, nature gazes right back lovingly; she is not offering the beguiling gaze of a silent, distant lover…

Every living thing deserves a place to call home, a roof overhead, a sense of peace and personal pride.  Where is your home? Is peace in residence there? Where is your home away from home?

“Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul. Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is also a state of mind. Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people.” Jawaharlal Nehru

Unfortunately, there was a glitch of some sort… I was attempting to schedule the post when somehow the post got published before I could add my pictures… Do come back again! It is in moments like this that we learn a lesson on what it takes to act from a place of peace… I accepted that stuff happens! TY! 🙂

This is meditative and peaceful. I re-read it several times and printed it out for my fridge door. Peace is inside and it comes from deep place that we can all tap into. You have and this post is peaceful and powerful.

Completely awesom, incredible collection of peaceful scenes. I especially enjoyed the quote from the 14th Dalai Lama about a truly peaceful mind being very sensitive, very aware. You must have been VERY peaceful when shooting these photos. May peace be ALWAYS with you and yours!

  14. 20/01/2012 1:27 pm

Very peaceful shots, Elizabeth and great quotations.

This morning it is peaceful here too. The kids are still asleep (not sure for how much longer) and John has gone off to a casual job to help out a friend. I have silence apart from the birds twittering outside. It is actually the first time I’ve had some silence during my waking hours all week.

As Nancy would say, “Arrrrh, that’s better”!

  15. 20/01/2012 2:13 pm

Amazing collection of peaceful sceneries! Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog too. Have a great weekend!

Your life must be full of peace, since you were able to come up with so many peaceful images. In particular I like the picture of a bird’s nest in the sky at sunset. The colours are just gorgeous. Thanks for all the wisdom and quotes.

Beautiful photos of places that can represent peaceful conditions. So difficult to show by photo a state of mind. Yet you are able to capture it so well. Love the photo of the deer in your backyard and Tangy, of course!

  20. 21/01/2012 12:49 pm

Lovely photos and words Elizabeth – a post that brings a sense of peace.

Tangy has a charmed life, I’m sure 🙂 And what a great idea to have hammocks in a park! Never seen that before. Thx

    Love the Dalai Lama’s quote . . .

A peaceful mind offers a clearer reflection. _/!\_

  23. 22/01/2012 12:19 pm

Thank you for this beautiful and soothing post…I read it a few days ago and that sense of calmness and kindness in your post still soothes…the repeated “Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti” phrases are lovely and that final blessing is beautiful…thank you so much… ( I hope my frequent use of words such as beautiful, lovely etc don’t get me sent to “time out” in your own spam-land folders????… )

  24. 23/01/2012 6:38 am
