Happiness Haiku: What Does Happiness Mean To You? Laughter, Love, Hope, Abundant Joy...

I believe all suffering is caused by ignorance. People inflict pain on others in the selfish pursuit of their happiness or satisfaction. Yet true happiness comes from a sense of peace and contentment, which in turn must be achieved through the cultivation of altruism, of love and compassion, and elimination of ignorance, selfishness, and greed. Dalai Lama

This post sums up what I thought “happiness” is. Love, joy, inner peace , good health, family and friends, fulfillment and sense of meaning /purpose. Happiness too is that state when you wake up just seeing the world as full of optimism, possibilities, and a glow in your heart that consumes every part of you. Merry Christmas to you and your family. May all blessings be with you always.

Lovely post – I am very entertained to see that Ireland is in the Top 10 happiest countries – I am going to tell everybody that piece of news, as I live in Ireland and we have done a lot of complaining about our lot over the past few years! We are, however, by nature quite happy-go-lucky (as per our stereotype!) so hopefully we’ll reconnect with that!

I often thing that the conceptual framework of pursuing happiness as an end in itself is a mistake as it’s like peace and is a consequence of how we live our lives. I suspect we are actually hard-wired to serve others and that this is where our real happiness lies – not as slaves or enforced servants but voluntarily.

Most of us are happy to ‘serve’ our children, most of us get huge satisfaction from the welfare, happiness and accomplishments of our children – at least as much as from our own. If we could see everyone else on the planet as we see our families then maybe we’d not only function better we’d also be happier?

Thanks for the provoking of thought!

I love this thought by reciprocity that maybe we’d function better and also be happier if we could see everyone else on the planet as we see our families.

Happiness is to lay down on the right elbow,
after you’ve rested on the left for a while …

Oh, happiness could mean to never look back at the past. It depresses me. Just keep looking ahead and look at all the good things that will happen. As far as the world goes, I don’t see any happy world. There will always be war and there will always be global issues in our world. Let’s make world peace. That would help.

  13. 20/12/2011 2:48 pm

    love the map. very interesting.

    All’s right with the world!

Thank you for always being positive, Eliz and I really learn a lot from you and your blog 🙂
Happiness for me is when I see others happy.
Happiness for me is when I can love others.
Happiness for me is when I know others love me.
Happiness for me is when I see others smile.
Happiness for me is when I see my boys happy and give me their big kisses and hugs.

I agree with Carnegie: happiness should not be put off to some future date. We should all find our happiness (whatever that means to the individual) now.

    Look inside, find peace.
    Love, give, share, enjoy, savor,

Happiness is the state that is OTHER than everything else. It ranges from contentment to ecstasy. I’ve found it to be just a thought away, despite the circumstances.
