Musings: How Do You Embrace Change?

10/12/2011

“If we can recognize that change and uncertainty are basic principles, we can greet the future and the transformation we are undergoing with the understanding that we do not know enough to be pessimistic.” Hazel Henderson

Musings: How Do You Embrace Change? Change is constant… Adapt.

How do you embrace change? Do you resist or persist? When you are faced with great change, what do you do first? I believe it is Henry David Thoreau who said that: “Things do not change; we change.” When I was younger, we moved quite a bit, and some of our moves were international; across continents. One thing we had to learn rather quickly was to adapt to new environments and find ways to make the move positive. Of course, one of the first things we did was to make new friends and find neighbors to connect with and learn from. Our experience was mostly positive, but we experienced the occasional challenge adjusting to disgruntled new neighbors. Since change is constant, what becomes apparent for any of us going through change is that how we choose to handle it is critically important… our attitude matters. Below are Ten Tips on embracing change… What would you suggest? More below. 😉

“Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced.”  James Arthur Baldwin

Musings: How Do You Embrace Change? … Shift your perspective…

Whenever we go through changes in our lives, others are quick to remind us that change is good; change is growth, change is exciting and so on. However, it is important that we take some time to reflect on what has prompted the change in our life, and then decide what our best course of action should be. We can see change as a blessing in disguise, and as a time of growth which it is; the more we believe or take that positive position, the easier our times of change will be. Embracing change requires self-effort too. We can adopt the following tips to help us adjust to change:
♥Approach change with a positive attitude and perception,
♥View change as an exciting time of growth, blessings and opportunity to turn a new leaf,
♥Appreciate that a new location = new friends and fresh new things to learn,
♥Recognize that change gives us a change to step out of our comfort zone and embrace new ways of being/living,
♥Embrace change as a powerful opportunity for exploration and adventure

“If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we are not really living.” Gail Sheehy

Musings: How Do You Embrace Change? View it as an adventure…

This year has been a tremendous year of global and local change. We have seen nations change leaders and adopt new rules of engagement. Some of us have moved, changed jobs, experienced loss and all sorts of changes; both good and not so good. So even as we prepare ourselves to end 2011 and embrace a new year, we can look back and see how much we have changed and how we have weathered some of the storms in our lives. How have we handled the shifting tides in our lives? What lessons could we offer others? We can adopt these additional change tips:
♥Celebrate the positive changes and reflect on the lessons of the tougher ones
♥Focus on the great life lessons that change brought into our lives things in life
♥Be Proactive about what you have to do and set out intent on completing your plan of action.
♥Connect with new people and keep an open mind…
♥Imagine/Visualize where you wish to be and what you want to accomplish and then act on it…

Growing pains are part of the change process, but if we keep in mind that all things go through a flux and that our effort and attitude make a huge difference, we will come through in flying colors. May your experience of change be positive and uplifting… What are your thoughts? How do you embrace change? Do you resist or persist? When you are faced with great change, what do you do first? Do share! Thank you. 😉

There isn’t much I’d add to your list, only: Declutter – choose what you want to take with you and let go of what has become obsolete – stuff as well as habits and habitual thinking…Make room for what is coming 🙂

‘Declutter’ – I think I have to add this to my list!

Thanks for all your attention to my posts. With your help my blog received 49 visits yesterday–a record number, and it was a Saturday (weekends are always slow) to boot! Thanks again.

Declutter–yes! That’s the beauty of moving. When you see how much stuff you’ve accumulated you begin to realize how little you can live without when it’s a choice between packing it or pitching it!
Great post, Eliz. I like to think I enjoy change, but I enjoy it more when it’s on my terms. LOL.

    hello again!
I actually love change, and thinking back on it, i’ve felt this way since i was a young kid. Now that i’m on the other side of 55, (yayy, my birthday was last week.. i LOVE my birthday!) I suppose this is a good thing. I’ve been noticing that many of my peers shy away from any type of change, even those that might bring happiness.
I hope you get some replies from people who face change reluctantly or with absolute avoidance…i’m very curious about differences in attitude.
(I’m enjoying your blog very much, Elizabeth! )

The only constant in life is change. Don’t know where I first heard that but it has been very true in my life. You just have to keep an open mind and open heart.
    Thanks!

I view change (and LIFE) with “cautious optimism.” 😉

Wonderful and full of inspiration 🙂

Mmm… I’ve not always good at managing changes. Thanks for the tips! I might have a few changes happening in my life in the next few months so I need this!

I thrive on change!! I love that there is always something new on the horizon 🙂 Thanks for the reminder!!

I would love to say that I embrace change optimistically, but I’m not a very adventurous gal! I tend to cultivate routines very carefully, and feel at my best when those routines hum. Now and then I sense a rut, and will branch out some. Truthfully, though, change is inevitable and nothing stays the same very long. You do inspire me to think a little “wider,” Elizabeth–you always do! Debra

Oh, Elizabeth – I have a million big questions! Where do I start?

We are still “starting out”, so to speak! Will I finish our book? Will it be published? Will we build a new house? Will the kids get into university?

Let alone the really BIG questions of will I ever live to see world peace, or protection of the global environment.

OK – don’t ask me how I did this, but THIS comment is meant to be on the previous article! Arrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

I really think I have embraced more than my fair share of change this year, so I am hoping 2012 will be a year of stability! 😀

Love the first photo. It’s amazing! Thank you for this post and the positive motivation tip. I’ve got to remember to see the positive.

It depends. Sometimes, I grab change with both hands, at other times I waffle, resist, persist, drag my feet.
