We spend a lot of time during our lifetime waiting for all sorts of things; love, doctors, food, life, concerts or museum events, anticipated outcomes, success, revenge, happiness and an endless list of events and things that keep life interesting. With each milestone we complete, we have an expectation of what would come after and how it would impact our lives. Even that wonderful sculpture of Sigmund Freud could use some human company posing for a photo opportunity or sharing a discourse on Freudian slips! 😉 Living in a big city, like in the city that never sleeps, includes doses of long waits for everything; especially waiting for public transportation. Why do we spend so much time waiting? Why do we even agree to wait for entry to a ridiculously popular restaurant that sits 5 people and takes 6 month reservations?

For this prompt, I was quite surprised at the collection of photos I have that show people waiting in all sorts of settings. I wondered what it was about waiting that caught my interest. Sure, the excitement and anticipation that precedes a great show, a fine meal or even entry to the Alexander McQueen show add to our conversations on waiting. The retrospective was phenomenal and I wrote a post on it and added all the pictures I took that night… It wasn’t easy to do, trust me! Waiting to be fed at the 5th Station on Mt Fuji or at a fine restaurant at The Chelsea Market is an exciting prospect any day. Try it.

Woohoo! Zemanta is back and that was worth waiting for; just like these folk are waiting for customers. Would you like to buy some honey or dried fruit? Or would you like to join the young ladies waiting in front of the Diplomat Hotel in Stockholm? They look ready for a performance in their beautiful gowns. Waiting for the dentist is painful. Waiting to hear bad news can be devastating, and that car? The poor owner must have been shocked to see it. Above, we see the aftermath of that freak snowfall and storm we had last month or so. Waiting for Sade was thrilling… Like all concerts by artists we love, we don’t mind the long wait.

I must admit I attended that OWN cattle call and camped out with friends the night before. We had fun. I was curious but I doubt I’d do it again… Rockefeller Center is quite romantic in the winter… and lovers meet there to have a lovely evening skating, window shopping, enjoying the magnificent Christmas tree, or just chilling… A worthwhile wait, no?

I’m still digesting the events of the night I attended the Jay-Z and Kanye West Watch The Throne Show… I will post on it sometime soon. It was amazing with some twists that gave me pause. The excitement in the air was palpable… Everyone waiting for the stars to appear; then Jay-Z walked by with security. My camera f—d up. That’s life, eh? The other picture is of Reed College Library. I loved my visit, with one of my kids, to Reed College. We had a great time and the students impressed me; refreshing and smart. I also loved visiting Portland. I could live there; well, after Seattle perhaps… 😉

Graduation came like a cool summer breeze… Waiting 12-13 years for this moment and then … magic. I hold cherished memories for my kids and it was worth the wait. The NYC cabbie shot you see was taken as part of a complaint I planned to file… Funny now, right? It wasn’t at the time and I’ll share that story someday. Life goes on even while we wait… What about you? What does waiting mean or look like to you? Was it easy/hard to find the right photos for your examples of waiting? Hi Eliz nice collection of photographs for this weeks theme. However, I disagree with Alexandre Dumas(if I dare) “All human wisdom is summed up in two words – wait and hope.”
For example: you could wait for a train all day long but unless you check the timetable first they may not run on that day” Hoping does not come into it LOL 🙂
Sometimes as well as the patience we show in waiting as to be balance with actions
Thank you PiP for your comment! I think what Alexandre meant was that life is about waiting and also about hoping for positive outcomes but not necessarily in the way you describe it. I would hope that anyone on a train platform would check to see why there is a delay and not stand there forever.

I follow the wisdom of Mister Rogers, “Let’s find something to do while we’re waiting, while we’re waiting…” It’s a really great song.
My kids watched Mister Rogers and I grew to love him too… Yes, let’s keep our lives moving forward as we wait for those often delayed dreams. 🙂
I don’t mind waiting if it’s for something fun or interesting. Last night I had to wait for parents for parent conferences–not fun, I try to be patient. Great collection of photos–interesting!
Yes, same here. I didn’t mind waiting to see the Alexander McQueen retrospective. I was very excited to do so… but waiting for some things is not fun at all… Then, there are things we shouldn’t even bother waiting for… TY! 🙂

Oh my goodness!!! Your picture of the Freud sculpture at Clark illustrates “waiting” in ways that go far beyond that bench!
For those who are unfamiliar, Clark University is located in an area of Worcester known as Main South, where waiting is so routine it’s institutional!! Less than 5 minutes from Freud, people wait for buses, food pantries, drug dealers, spare change, hope.

Waiting is something I am not good at and the Lord humbles me each time I drive my car or have to wait in line at a store.
It has been another year for all of us. A year of waiting, doing, moving, receiving and giving. As we await for 2012 , its an opportunity to evaluate which part of our lives in 2011 was worth the wait and thus worth nurturing. Everything there is to wait and celebrate are sum up in this post. Beautiful post my friend. I wondered when your going to post about “waiting” and after reading it I said, ” that is definitely worth the wait!” Inspiring as always. Merry Christmas…,
This is a timely topic for me because this week I experienced an excessive waiting at a provider’s office. Polite me, didn’t say much out loud, except at the end “how much longer?” but I planned never to return as it was stressful for me. The owner of the business rang our doorbell tonight to deliver an order I had placed with him. I had cancelled our app’t. as I wasn’t looking forward to slow service. I found it touching, so he has me as a customer now, hopefully I’m more relaxed about waiting. 🙂
I was looking at the train station on Canal St. and the Met, have been there many times. Makes me want to travel to NY next year and get together with my friends, probably will.

I ususally don’t mind waiting…I utilize the time to take in my surroundings, check my list of things to do and people watch.
Passive waiting is a bore… I consider active waiting a bonus time, or bonus time-out for my thinking brain – anything that takes my mind off “waiting for”
