Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting…

07/12/2011

“All human wisdom is summed up in two words – wait and hope.” Alexandre Dumas

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... Sigmund Freud at Clark Univ waiting for human company... 😉

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... A fine cup of tea is worth waiting for...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... The ubiquitous NYC subway station wait for a train...

We spend a lot of time during our lifetime waiting for all sorts of things; love, doctors, food, life, concerts or museum events, anticipated outcomes, success, revenge, happiness and an endless list of events and things that keep life interesting. With each milestone we complete, we have an expectation of what would come after and how it would impact our lives.  Even that wonderful sculpture of Sigmund Freud could use some human company posing for a photo opportunity or sharing a discourse on Freudian slips! 😉 Living in a big city, like in the city that never sleeps, includes doses of long waits for everything; especially waiting  for public transportation. Why do we spend so much time waiting? Why do we even agree to wait for entry to a ridiculously popular restaurant that sits 5 people and takes 6 month reservations?

“None of us knows what the next change is going to be, what unexpected opportunity is just around the corner, waiting a few months or a few years to change all the tenor of our lives.” Kathleen Norris

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... People on the Met Museum balcony waiting for Alexander McQueen show

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... People waiting to be seated or served...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... Waiting to be fed at a food stand on Mt Fuji's 5th Station...?

For this prompt, I was quite surprised at the collection of photos I have that show people waiting in all sorts of settings. I wondered what it was about waiting that caught my interest. Sure, the excitement and anticipation that precedes a great show, a fine meal or even entry to the Alexander McQueen show add to our conversations on waiting. The retrospective was phenomenal and I wrote a post  on it and added all the pictures I took that night… It wasn’t easy to do,  trust me! Waiting to be fed at the 5th Station on Mt Fuji or at a fine restaurant at The Chelsea Market  is an exciting prospect any day. Try it.

“Everything you want is out there waiting for you to ask. Everything you want also wants you. But you have to take action to get it.” Jules Renard

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... Waiting for customers to buy their goodies in Normandy...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... A busy market day with fierce competition in dried fruits... seller waits..

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... It was early morning in Stockholm and they were dressed for a concert... waiting.

Woohoo! Zemanta is back and that was worth waiting for; just like these folk are waiting for customers. Would you like to buy some honey or dried fruit?  Or would you like to join the young ladies waiting in front of the Diplomat Hotel in Stockholm? They look ready for a performance in their beautiful gowns. Another lady waits with a camera in hand… I’ve added a selection of photos on the subject… Come back for more.  More below. 😉

“Waiting is painful. Forgetting is painful. But not knowing which to do is the worse kind of suffering.” Paulo Coelho

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... Aftermath of the storm... car waiting to be rescued.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... Crowd waits in anticipation at Sade Show..

Waiting for the dentist is painful. Waiting to hear bad news can be devastating, and that car?  The poor owner must have been shocked to see it. Above, we see the aftermath of that freak snowfall and storm we had last month or so. Waiting for Sade was thrilling… Like all concerts by artists we love, we don’t mind the long wait.

“How much of human life is lost in waiting.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... Waiting to sign up for OWN contest to have your own TV show..

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... At Rockefeller Center skating rink... some skate, some wait...

I must admit I attended that OWN cattle call and camped out with friends the night before. We had fun. I was curious but I doubt I’d do it again…  Rockefeller Center is quite romantic in the winter… and lovers meet there to have a lovely evening skating, window shopping, enjoying the magnificent Christmas tree, or just chilling… A worthwhile wait, no?

“We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” Joseph Campbell

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... Waiting at the Jay-Z & Kanye West Watch The Throne show as Jay-Z walks by...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... Waiting to enter the library at Reed College tour in Portland...

I’m still digesting the events of the night I attended the Jay-Z and Kanye West Watch The Throne Show… I will post on it sometime soon. It was amazing with some twists that gave me pause. The excitement in the air was palpable… Everyone waiting for the stars to appear; then Jay-Z walked by with security. My camera f—d up. That’s life, eh? The other picture is of Reed College Library. I loved my visit, with one of my kids, to Reed College. We had a great time and the students impressed me; refreshing and smart. I also loved visiting Portland. I could live there; well, after Seattle perhaps… 😉

“Waiting is a trap. There will always be reasons to wait. The truth is, there are only two things in life, reasons and results, and reasons simply don’t count.” Dr. Robert Anthony

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... Waiting for HS graduation ceremony to begin...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting... NYC cabbies waiting for the red traffic light to change...

Graduation came like a cool summer breeze… Waiting 12-13 years for this moment and then  … magic. I hold cherished memories for my kids and it was worth the wait. The NYC cabbie shot  you see was taken as part of a complaint I planned to file… Funny now, right? It wasn’t at the time and I’ll share that story someday. Life goes on even while we wait… What about you? What does waiting mean or look like to you? Was it easy/hard to find the right photos for your examples of waiting? Were you drawn to specific examples for the prompt? Did you enjoy selecting your photos for this prompt? Do share? Thank you! 🙂

Positive Motivation Tip: A lot of life is about waiting; for love, for life, for food, for concerts or museum events, for outcomes, for revenge, for happiness. Be present in your wait… Time flies

  2. 07/12/2011 10:02 pm

Waiting is painful… as quoted by Paulo Coelho in your post… especially when one had to wait for Zemanta to return! Please don’t leave old friend!
    🙂

    • 08/12/2011 9:17 am

Yes, there are times when we wait in pain and perhaps in vain… I’m glad Zemanta is back too. TY for your feedback! 🙂

  3. 07/12/2011 11:24 pm

What happened to Al’s hair? 🙂

    • 08/12/2011 8:40 am

nothing…he’s freud! 🙂 one genius can often be mistake for another 😉

      • 08/12/2011 9:05 am

No, he wasn’t mistaken for another, just identified as another; stuff happens! 😆 TY!

    • 08/12/2011 9:03 am

😆 Yeah Tilly, that was a classic Freudian slip to call him Einstein… He must have been turning in his grave. Don’t ask how I had one man in mind and introduced the other. Oops si daisy TY!

Hi Eliz nice collection of photographs for this weeks theme. However, I disagree with Alexandre Dumas(if I dare) “All human wisdom is summed up in two words – wait and hope.”
For example: you could wait for a train all day long but unless you check the timetable first they may not run on that day” Hoping does not come into it LOL 🙂
Sometimes as well as the patience we show in waiting as to be balance with actions

    • 08/12/2011 9:26 am

Thank you PiP for your comment! I think what Alexandre meant was that life is about waiting and also about hoping for positive outcomes but not necessarily in the way you describe it. I would hope that anyone on a train platform would check to see why there is a delay and not stand there forever.
Yes, we wait, we hope and we act… actions are definitely an important part of the equation. TY PiP, I love your feedback! 🙂

  5. 08/12/2011 3:12 am

Don’t arrive anywhere early…that cuts the waiting time by quite a bit 😉

    • 08/12/2011 9:26 am

BB you had me laughing on that one! 😆 TY!

  6. 08/12/2011 3:35 am

I follow the wisdom of Mister Rogers, “Let’s find something to do while we’re waiting, while we’re waiting…” It’s a really great song.

    • 08/12/2011 9:28 am

My kids watched Mister Rogers and I grew to love him too… Yes, let’s keep our lives moving forward as we wait for those often delayed dreams. 🙂

  7. 08/12/2011 4:12 am

I don’t mind waiting if it’s for something fun or interesting. Last night I had to wait for parents for parent conferences–not fun, I try to be patient. Great collection of photos–interesting!

    • 08/12/2011 9:30 am

Yes, same here. I didn’t mind waiting to see the Alexander McQueen retrospective. I was very excited to do so… but waiting for some things is not fun at all… Then, there are things we shouldn’t even bother waiting for… TY! 🙂

  8. 08/12/2011 5:23 am

Nice combination. I like the ” graduation ceremony to begin..” They look so happy.

    • 08/12/2011 9:31 am

TY! It was a fantastic day and it was so good to be in a happy gathering… Kids, parents and everyone enjoyed the event. 🙂

Great images… loved the one of the tea room!

    • 08/12/2011 9:33 am

TY Savira, It is a beautiful Tea Room and it is even more so when you visit it. The space, the lighting, the rich aroma of exotic tea leaves, and the friendly service make a huge difference. 🙂

Oh my goodness!!! Your picture of the Freud sculpture at Clark illustrates “waiting” in ways that go far beyond that bench!
For those who are unfamiliar, Clark University is located in an area of Worcester known as Main South, where waiting is so routine it’s institutional!! Less than 5 minutes from Freud, people wait for buses, food pantries, drug dealers, spare change, hope.

Thank you for posting this brilliant, thought provoking photo!

    • 08/12/2011 9:12 am

Thank you too for your comment. I appreciate your enthusiasm for that photo… It is one of my favorites too. 🙂 We visited Clark on accepted students day and had a good time there. My daughter chose to go to another school. I loved the campus and our visit.

  12. 08/12/2011 6:16 am

    thought provoking article again …

I agee it is a great collection of waiting shots! I have one of me waiting at the airport for my family to arrive – perhaps I should have used it!

    • 08/12/2011 12:23 pm

That would have been great but, you know, save it for your book! TY 🙂

  16. 08/12/2011 1:53 pm

That poor car after the storm. Out of all the great photos that one spoke to me.

  17. 08/12/2011 2:38 pm

Great post! An analysis of waiting. It is intriguing to see all the different aspects and ways of waiting that you show and write about. Nice pictures!
Thanks for the pingback; much appreciated!

Waiting is something I am not good at and the Lord humbles me each time I drive my car or have to wait in line at a store.

  19. 08/12/2011 5:34 pm

It has been another year for all of us. A year of waiting, doing, moving, receiving and giving. As we await for 2012 , its an opportunity to evaluate which part of our lives in 2011 was worth the wait and thus worth nurturing. Everything there is to wait and celebrate are sum up in this post. Beautiful post my friend. I wondered when your going to post about “waiting” and after reading it I said, ” that is definitely worth the wait!” Inspiring as always. Merry Christmas…,

  20. 08/12/2011 6:54 pm

This is a timely topic for me because this week I experienced an excessive waiting at a provider’s office. Polite me, didn’t say much out loud, except at the end “how much longer?” but I planned never to return as it was stressful for me. The owner of the business rang our doorbell tonight to deliver an order I had placed with him. I had cancelled our app’t. as I wasn’t looking forward to slow service. I found it touching, so he has me as a customer now, hopefully I’m more relaxed about waiting. 🙂

I was looking at the train station on Canal St. and the Met, have been there many times. Makes me want to travel to NY next year and get together with my friends, probably will.

Very well done article and photos!

  21. 08/12/2011 8:30 pm

    Why wait . . . meditate! Ohm . . .

  22. 08/12/2011 8:59 pm

I ususally don’t mind waiting…I utilize the time to take in my surroundings, check my list of things to do and people watch.

  23. 08/12/2011 9:28 pm

Passive waiting is a bore… I consider active waiting a bonus time, or bonus time-out for my thinking brain – anything that takes my mind off “waiting for”

  24. 14/12/2011 7:15 pm

    Lovely collection of waiting photos.
