Like the eyes, windows give us an opening through which we can see or retreat from the world. Everywhere we look, there are windows staring back at us; some intricate, some inviting, and others utilitarian. No matter how we choose to define the windows we see, in simple or spiritual terms, what is important is the fact that they bring light to a space, they add character to a structure, and they give us a way to look at others and at the world… For this challenge, I had to pair down on my selections because I love taking pictures of buildings and had tons to choose from… I hope you like my final choices.

I love looking at buildings; especially architecturally beautiful buildings. Whenever I travel, I always find time to walk around the city or town I’m visiting to enjoy the local architecture, take pictures, and imagine the lives of the inhabitants in the homes I walk by… If you pay attention, the design, layout of homes vary from country to country and I love when I come across an old home that is representative of some aspect of the history of an area. The size and shape of the windows also tell a story. Are they large, open and welcoming? Are they small, intricate, draped with heavy curtains? What does that say about how people view privacy in their town/city/village?

Another thing about windows is that it soon becomes pretty apparent that newer, modern buildings have full length, floor to ceiling reflective glass windows, like the Frank Gehry building above, and that older buildings have windows that are smaller, with moldings and intricate designs; each more magnificent than the last, as if the artisans were competing to see who could be more flashy or even gaudier than Antoni Gaudi – one of my favorite architects of all times. By the way, I love bay windows… a lot of brownstone buildings in NYC have them and I love the idea of sitting by one and looking outside.

The quote above by Elisabeth K-R is one of my favorites because it touches on a powerful aspect of the human spirit and character. Like beautiful bright windows, we shine and shimmer in the sun but who we truly are comes through when the sun sets and moonlight or dark night sets in. What are our windows like? Buildings with lots of windows always fascinate me. I try to imagine how much effort went into the design and how they heat the space in the winter. Whenever I walk around Manhattan, I marvel at the many tall buildings with endless, small windows; often representing high priced space with somewhat small square footage. People love the city and are willing to pay for it. You just learn to maximize your space till you earn more and upgrade…

NYC has, like many other cosmopolitan cities in other parts of the world, beautiful architecture. Some of the buildings in the city are so gorgeous that one stops to admire them for a while. I’m always curious about buildings with something unique as they offer us food for thought… What about you? Was it easy/hard to find the right photos for your example of Windows? I know Frank Gehry well because I was a studen of architecture. However, I have never visited his architecture.
NY sounds interesting place. I should go to the city.

The summary at the end is perfect, for it is when we are faced with the greatest challenges that you must find the light in your heart that will allow you not to be enveloped in the darkness.
