Memories: A Day Of Dance, Song And Synchronicity…

Memories: A Day Of Dance, Song And Synchronicity… and dance, though not quite like Jagger

Have you ever had a song follow you everywhere, popping up in all sorts of places? Well, the song, Moves Like Jagger has become one of those synchronicity experiences that has me scratching my head. I first heard the song at my Jazzercize class. Each day I showed up for class, it didn’t matter who was teaching the class, they’d play that song. Soon, I had it playing in my head, I found myself singing parts of it in the supermarket, in the shower, even while driving my car. Then my blog buddy Nancy at Spirit Lights The Way had it listed as one of her Music Monday songs… I think.  As if that wasn’t enough, one of my kids and a few friends created a video of themselves singing and dancing to it… Hm mm, I started to pay serious attention to that crazy funny song…

“Today equals the sum of yesterdays dreams and tomorrows memories” William Shubin

Then, a few days ago, I was minding my own business in NYC during a break from a workshop, and as I dashed to get a bite to eat, there were a group of young dancers executing pirouettes and plies to the same song. Yes, Moves Like Jagger, not I Can’t Get No Satisfaction… I couldn’t help but think back to the days when dance was an important part of my life. I’ve always loved music, and dancing was a big part of my life. I  took Dunham technique dance classes at Alvin Ailey, studied African dance, ballet and jazz, spent many Manhattan nights at the best dance/disco clubs, and even considered doing music videos, but my family talked me out of it… Here I was on the street, being reminded about when I executed some serious moves too. So, I put my bag down for a moment and did a turn or two… It was quite liberating, and brought back a flood of memories of how much dance was a life line for me at one point in my life. Quite honestly, I’m not sure how or why I let it go. Yeah, life happened, kids came, foot surgery and shifting expectations occurred.  But, at that moment of dancing on the street, I finally got the message of the Moves Like Jagger song.  More below 😉

“I’ve never tried to block out the memories of the past, even though some are painful. I don’t understand people who hide from their past. Everything you live through helps to make you the person you are now.” Sophia Loren

Memories: A Day Of Dance, Song And Synchronicity… even Jagger must be impressed

I’ve heard the quote “The best things in life come in threes, like friends, dreams, and memories,” and I find it speaks to the wonderful memories that show up when we least expect them.  I grew up listening to Mick Jagger and the band and their music. I Can’t Get No Satisfaction was one of my favorite songs back in the days when I was a kid listening to Mick, The Beatles, and a bunch of artists from that era.  Oddly, I always fancied Mick as an energetic singer but a bit of a spastic dancer. 😆  So the crazy funny song always makes me smile…  It might be time for me to dig up those dance shoes and take a few classes again.  What are your thoughts? What memories attached to songs come to your mind? Do you have any stories to go with your songs? Do share! Thank you. 🙂

Friends, dreams and memories — love that! My grown-up daughter and her friend were playing some dance music downstairs the other night. They let me dance with them — JOY and memories.

I wish I was a dancer myself so I can dance in the streets too.
I like that song and it has a catchy tune. This post made me so wistful, I love it.

I used to think Mick was a bit of a spastic dancer as well. Now, he’s got a tribute song to his moves? Gah! I’m old!

Love this! I’m so out of it – until I saw the Maroon 5 video, I had never heard this song! Makes me want to dance too! Gotta go download it now. Oh yeah, and btw, where’s the YouTube of you dancing? Your fans are waiting… 😉

Thanks for the link . . . but it wasn’t me. I featured Wild Horses a few weeks ago, but I’ve never heard the song Moves Like Jagger before ~ maybe you changed the memory. 😉

Be that as it may . . . when something keeps popping up, it usually is the Universe trying to get us to focus on something of import.

    On with the dance!

You studied at Ailey… wow! I LOVE them and have seen them more times than I can count. Trying to figure out a way to go this season.
    Fun post. Thanks

“We cannot change our memories, but we can change their meaning and the power they have over us” – David Seamands – That is so true! And it is interesting how we all can have different memories the same event or moment. That just shows how it is our perception that really matters, not what actually happened. Very thoughtful post Eliz. Thank you. 🙂

Music is such an integral part of our lives — it truly is difficult to hear good dance music and not want to get up and move.
Where I am now, I hear drumming at least 4 times a week. If I hadn’t been writing today when they started, I would have gone over (again!). They were playing a song I recognize and it just made my heart sing. Can’t live without music.

I never saw the video before. The first time I heard the song, I thought it was kinda dumb. Now whenever it is on the radio, I will stop whatever I am doing and start dancing.

Thank goodness I am not the only one who is doing this.
