Tangy: A Day In The Life Of An Indolent Cat...
Our family cat Tangy is a very sweet American, short-hair, tabby cat. He is lazy like many of his kind who spend their lives indoors; indulged and waited on hand and foot. We got him at an animal shelter about 5 or so years ago and he has become not only the baby of the family, but also a loving, cuddly companion who acts like he owns the place. I was speaking with a friend today and I mentioned how he often finds a way to inform us when we are running out of cat food. He goes to the pantry cupboard, meows at the almost empty box and kicks it a few times…. “I wonder what he would say if he could speak to me directly?” I said. She laughed.
Sure enough, a prompt came via email about who we’d like to speak/not speak for 24 hours… Naturally, I’d like Tangy to fill in the meow gaps. But how does he spend his day? Our Tangy’s schedule:
Between 1:00 – 5:30am: Plays with his imaginary friends and catnaps in between. Periodically, dashes up and down the hallway before napping.
Between 5:30 – 7:30 a.m: Scratches on our bedroom door demanding company and food.
Between 7:30 – 8:30 a.m: Meows at staircase door to be let out; especially as he see members of the family going in and out… and then wanders off to the dining area to look outside and wait for the black and white cat, squirrels, or even deer that stop by.
8:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.: Sleep, eat, poop, chew the furniture, his toys, shoes, magazines and newspapers, play on the hardwood floor, check himself out in my bedroom mirror, climb into any empty box or bag big enough to hold him … and make frequent trips to the kitchen to eat. More below…
Our Tangy loves to sleep and he prefers to sleep in confined spaces; ideally cozy ones where he can cuddle up and wrap himself in a blanket, towel or a t-shirt. He loves boxes and whenever we get a package in a large enough box, we let him climb in and enjoy a nap for a day or two before we toss it. Sometimes, I wonder if he’d give Garfield a run for his money in the entertaining or lollygagging department? More on Tangy below. 😉 *** Come back later for more pictures on Tangy!

6:30 – 10 p.m: Hang out with family members, demand back rubs and ball games, walk on furniture, lie on dining table, rub against humans and purr happily when attention is given.
10 p.m. – 1 a.m: Eat, poop, sleep curled up on the sofa or in a box. Will wake up soon to really start his day all over again with some variation on the same routine.
While I used a time line above to give you a sense of his schedule, it isn’t a definitive timeline. His schedule revolves around his sleep time and everything else follows his sleep schedule. As you might know, cats love to nap hence the term ‘catnap.’ He probably sleeps for about 17-19 hours a day and when he’s awake, he plays, eats, and demands a back rub. One thing Tangy loves to do is rub against your leg or arm or even face and as Susan McDonough suggests, “When your cat rubs the side of its face along your leg, it’s affectionately marking you with its scent, identifying you as its private property, saying, in effect, ‘You belong to me.” I can live with that. Well it is so nice to see this post about your cat. I love cats as you may have noticed from my recent post on my two cats Thai-G and Little Baby. Thai is a very intelligent cat that has a variety of human-like behaviors. For example he lets me give him in a bath in the bathtub and he always stands on the toilet seat waiting for me to get out of the shower, so that I can sprinkle him with water and wet his coat. And while I dry myself off, he does the same at my feet. 🙂 Yeah I love their meditative state of mind as well.
Our pet shop has animal quotes on the walls. My favourite: Cats were once worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this.

Tangy sounds like an ideal friend. Yours is the second catty blog I’ve read this morning — there’s just something about the feline. Mysterious and meow meow meow — if only they could talk….
I’m convinced cats were humans just before they returned to life as cats. How else to explain their behaviors, their you-are-here-at-my-pleasure-and-to-serve-me attitude? Hahahaha, you just gotta love them!
Anyway, your Tangy’s way of telling you he’s out of food reminds me of my cousin’s bird. She tips the feeding can over and scratches until someone notices and brings her more food!
I love Tangy! What an adorable little cuddle ball! And those looks are so condescending… You cannot see cute with a condescending look and not end up smiling in return!
You know, there are cats with their own Facebook account – a friend of mine put one up for his cat and did some entries which were hysterically funny about his version of what the cat would post as his status. Tangy would be purrrfect for that (sorry – couldn’t resist!) 🙂

I love cats, but alas I don’t have one because I have two big dogs. Dogs are not as independent as cats, they like to know where their humans are at all times and prefer not to be left alone. But a dog is always happy to see you when you get home, whether you’ve been gone for 5 minutes for 5 days, they greet you like a long-lost friend! Since I work from home, I would be very loney without my dogs!
If I weren’t allergic I would have a cat in addition to my 2 dogs. The dogs would be cool with a cat I’m sure. I’m also sure there would be a power struggle between Sydney and the cat and I’m not sure who’d win that one.

A cat of luxury … I want to be Tangy
Ah, what a cutie! He reminds me of one of a friend’s cat, Monty (Montgomery, actually. His “mom” is from England). Monty was a great favorite of all the stitchers who gathered at Ann’s house. We left our stitching bags open for Monty’s inspection. If one of us had a sufficiently interesting bag, it would become his home for the evening. He was very gentlemanly about letting us have our bags back at the end of the night. His preferred sleeping spot was Ann’s knitting bag, which she stuffed with old rags to keep it comfy for him. You know a loved cat when the owner carries her knitting in a King Soopers (local grocery) bag! I’m glad Tangy has such a loving home and you have such a great companion!

I like Tangy! Cats can be wonderful companions, even though people think of dogs as the “companion” animal. I’ve had a couple of cats over the years and both were special in their own way.
