At some point in our lives, we’ve all been to places where we probably outlasted our welcome; intentionally or not. When that happens, there are often subtle ways we are nudged to move on… Sometimes we notice and at other times we ignore the hints. Here are ten signs that tell us it’s time to move on from a party, a visit with relatives, an event or any place that isn’t your home.

♥Everyone has left and the host is yawning
♥The children come downstairs and ask if you’re the delivery guy
♥The cops come to pick you up as someone called saying an invader is in the house

I agree that “some” guests “do not know when to leave.” I feel it is the attention seekers or talkers..braggers…they just don’t quit. I have often been at a party where this has happened in the past. It was especially true of the “drinker” of the party. I am always on time for parties, and I know when it is time for me to leave. What is crazy is my sister is always late. LOL… That is what makes us special I guess.
For people like you, Eliz, it is never time to leave!

Some people don’t know when to quit or leave a party. It is so sad when a host has to tell them to leave.
With the snow in your area, I bet the cafes are packed. Take care and get some rest.
I’ve had a few guests like that. Sometimes, you have to tell them straight out.
“Everyone has left and the host is yawning” This has happened to me several times. guests arrive at 19.00 and they are still there at
02.30am…they’ve drunk all your wine, hit the brandy and still looking for more.
Subtle hint (In that there is no more alchol on offer)
“Would you like a coffee for the road?”

I nearly died of embarrassment!
They went but we never received a return invite.
I have had a few of those…I have had house guests that have stayed with me and not lifted a finger to help despite me asking them to do so!

I now have this fantastic comment to get overstaying guests to leave – “OMG is that the time. I haven’t written my blog yet”. Works every time or at least the one time I have used it. 😀

My husband complains that I’m always the last to leave a party! I guess my sign to leave is his impatience…
You have reminded me that one sign my husband should notice as being an indication it is time to depart the home is when the five other family members are sitting in the car ready to gooooooooooooooooo.
Yes, the yawning is always a sign!! I have tried that to get people to leave… In Jamaica, people don’t take the hints (subtle or not so subtle) very well! Hope you get power back soon!

Well, I thank you for all the great suggestions. I must make a list to keep handy…we’ve had non-stop houseguests since early July, and somehow my name has made it to the “friends and family” registry alerting all that we host a free B & B. I may just have to pull out this list and find a few prompts to augment the look of fatigue on my face! Hope your power is restored. Weren’t you resourceful!! Debra
Finding just the right time to leave is somehow close to art. You have to feel the atmosphere and make everyone comfortable with your leave. My personal tip is to leave earlier than you would want to.
