Our First Snow Storm

Our First Snow Storm of Fall 2011
The snow storm that has swept through the North East today has left us all quite surprised by the amount it dumped on us, and the mess it might leave in its wake. Sure, we heard about it coming and were resigned to what it all meant in terms of inches and clean up. What we didn’t expect, at least from this peanut gallery, is tons of heavy, wet snow that took down power lines and cut electricity to over 500,000+ homes in my area.

Somehow, over the years, some of us had become immune to the power outages, it affected some towns and spared others, but not this time. Old man winter, in a hurry to sweep down on our region and wreck havoc everywhere, is determined to make sure that this snowfall season will become an equal opportunity abuser. Naturally, we are all miffed.

Snow is beautiful to look at from a seat by a bay window, with a fireplace burning,  chestnuts roasting in the open flame, and our bodies wrapped in warm flannels. Anything else, and it’s a nuisance of huge proportions; from downed power lines, slippery roads, dark cold homes, and felled trees, to all the wastage that comes from foods we must toss out from our refrigerators. Sure, things could be worse, I know. Thank you!

If feasible, I’ll add my photos and say enjoy our first snowfall for Fall 2011 but I can’t. (Last night when I wrote this post, typos and all, on my neighbors iPad as they gassed up their generator, I couldn’t add pictures; now I can from my only cafe with internet service). I even had the audacity to take an almost 2 hour walk today when it was barely a flurry. By the time I trudged through the aqueduct and made my way home, my sneakers were soaked and my sweats were  heavy from the snow. I wore a raincoat, but it didn’t matter. While it wasn’t cold or windy when I left home and headed out, committed to maintain my exercise routine, it got heavy and wet and a tad chilly by the time I got back home…

I want to say I hate the snow but I don’t… I’m being honest, my friends. No, I’m not moving to California, Florida or any warm clime anytime soon. I’ll just give Old man winter a call, and tell him to mosey on elsewhere. We can reconnect in December or when Winter arrives. I pray he picks up his phone so I won’t have to send him a tweet or like him on Facebook. 😉
