Our First Snow Storm

Our First Snow Storm... heavy and wet... covering everything in its path

Our First Snow Storm of Fall 2011
The snow storm that has swept through the North East today has left us all quite surprised by the amount it dumped on us, and the mess it might leave in its wake. Sure, we heard about it coming and were resigned to what it all meant in terms of inches and clean up. What we didn’t expect, at least from this peanut gallery, is tons of heavy, wet snow that took down power lines and cut electricity to over 500,000+ homes in my area.

Somehow, over the years, some of us had become immune to the power outages, it affected some towns and spared others, but not this time. Old man winter, in a hurry to sweep down on our region and wreck havoc everywhere, is determined to make sure that this snowfall season will become an equal opportunity abuser. Naturally, we are all miffed.

“I frequently tramped eight or ten miles through the deepest snow to keep an appointment with a beech-tree, or a yellow birch, or an old acquaintance among the pines.” Henry David Thoreau

Our First Snow Storm... More of same and melting slowly...

Snow is beautiful to look at from a seat by a bay window, with a fireplace burning,  chestnuts roasting in the open flame, and our bodies wrapped in warm flannels. Anything else, and it’s a nuisance of huge proportions; from downed power lines, slippery roads, dark cold homes, and felled trees, to all the wastage that comes from foods we must toss out from our refrigerators. Sure, things could be worse, I know. Thank you!

If feasible, I’ll add my photos and say enjoy our first snowfall for Fall 2011 but I can’t. (Last night when I wrote this post, typos and all, on my neighbors iPad as they gassed up their generator, I couldn’t add pictures; now I can from my only cafe with internet service). I even had the audacity to take an almost 2 hour walk today when it was barely a flurry. By the time I trudged through the aqueduct and made my way home, my sneakers were soaked and my sweats were  heavy from the snow. I wore a raincoat, but it didn’t matter. While it wasn’t cold or windy when I left home and headed out, committed to maintain my exercise routine, it got heavy and wet and a tad chilly by the time I got back home…

“I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.” George Washington

Our First Snow Storm... Notice how heavy the snow is?

I want to say I hate the snow but I don’t… I’m being honest, my friends. No, I’m not moving to California, Florida or any warm clime anytime soon. I’ll just give Old man winter a call, and tell him to mosey on elsewhere. We can reconnect in December or when Winter arrives. I pray he picks up his phone so I won’t have to send him a tweet or like him on Facebook. 😉

What about you? What are your thoughts? Did the snowstorm affect you? How are you coping or are you unaffected? If affected what are you doing? Do share! Thank you. 🙂

This post was inspired by Old man winter 🙁

I wouldn’t want to Like him on Facebook either!
I was shocked when one of my friends said snow was expected today and when I spoke with her mid-afternoon, power was already out. She checked into a hotel near her home. I heard on the news earlier that electricity probably won’t be back before Wednesday. Yikes!
Be safe, dry and warm. Hope your electricity stays on. Send photos when you can. Like you, I like watching snow from the comfort of home but hate power cuts, being cold and having to clean it up.

Not expecting a snow storm any time soon Marcia?

It’s crazy isn’t it? I hope it doesn’t mean you are going to have a savage winter Eliz.

Stay safe indoors and keep warm, hope you don’t have any power cuts.
I’d love to see some pics if and when you can take some – we don’t get snow where I live and as you say, it’s nice to look at but can have a devastating effect on our lives.

I’m right there with you ElizOF- I do like to look at the white snow; after it accumulates, its beautiful to look at from the baywindow-but, when one has to get out to drive in it-it becomes a different picture !!

No matter how old we get, weather always surprises us because it is so capricious.

It sounds like the snow has had a big impact on your area. I can’t imagine what it would be like.

    cheers

Good for you getting out walking in that junk yesterday and for two hours! I’ve been walking 2 miles a day for some time, but it’s not enough anymore. I need to jack up on the distance.

Snow is very beautiful without any relation to our lives.Take care.
    Hope your warm life. 🙂

We were too far south to get this snowstorm but we did have our first frost last night. I brought in all of the plants from my porch–now it looks lonely and sad. Since you’ve gotten such an early snow–perhaps that means you will also get a very early spring 🙂

We watched the storm on TV. We are glad we moved south. Stay warm! 😀

I’m with you… this was NOT amusing at all. I read recently they’re expecting a snowy cold early winter and a milder jan. / feb. Of course they were all wrong with their predictions last year and the year before. But given a choice I’ll take the snow in jan/feb because that’s when I’m prepared for it.

    Stay warm and safe!

Snow storms are something I never have to contend with. Bush fires and floods yes, snow, no.

It really can wreck havic, I see. Glad you and yours are OK and hope power is not off for too long.

  13. 30/10/2011 2:13 pm

Thank you all for your comments! I will catch up when I have full access to power. For now, I’m on a time limit at my local cafe… Will visit your blogs soon. 🙁

  14. 30/10/2011 4:47 pm

Hope your power’s back soon! We were lucky here; some 65,000 people lost power and we weren’t included. We do have a lot of sympathy for you, though!

  15. 30/10/2011 6:41 pm

Brrrr….the snow is beautiful, but the complications can be trying….stay warm…and I hope the power is on by now…or will be soon….

  16. 30/10/2011 7:54 pm

I remember the ice cold burning sensation after walking outside for a long time on my face and the wet freezing feet from the cold. I never used to notice it so much until I came inside and out of it! Then it would hit me! You are brave to be out there taking pictures and walking!

Goodness sakes, woman! Stay warm by the fire with a nice glass of wine, a blanket and a good book!

  17. 30/10/2011 9:55 pm

No snow yet but I am sure it’s coming…..power outages are a quick way to FULLY appreciate all the luxuries we have in our daily lives.

We don’t get snow where I live. I used to miss it but I am not so sure now!

  20. 31/10/2011 9:13 am

I have never been in the snow time before. It was only winter that I had. Hope you are ok, Eliz

Seeing these photos and reading your blog I remember why we left Montreal all those years ago. I am very impressed that like Cobb and Co you keep on getting through. 🙂

  22. 01/11/2011 2:05 pm

Wow! That’s some snow. Especially for so early in the season.

  23. 01/11/2011 7:08 pm

I’m in south Jersey, so the storm didn’t affect me. I only got a couple of inches of snow on the ground. On the night after the storm, my brother and I played snowball fights in my front yard. That was fun, only because it’s been since March that we got any snow. Sometimes Winter can be fun, it just depends on if its overdone or not. I just can hardly believe we got snow before Halloween even.

It’s crazy to hear about this freak snow storm at the same time as it’s a comfortable 60-70 degrees during the daytime here…..I heard about this on the news and felt bad for the ones that lost their lives and for the ones without power. Hopefully, there are no more freak storms this year!

  25. 04/11/2011 12:53 pm

We got fierce winds and torrential rains. I don’t mind snow storms as long as the sun comes out the next day and melts it all!
