Inspiration: Color And I Are One…

11/10/2011

“Color possesses me. I don’t have to pursue it. It will possess me always, I know it. That is the meaning of this happy hour: Color and I are one. I am a painter.” Paul Klee

The Beauty of Colors
Imagine a world without color… What would it look like to you? If it weren’t for the kaleidoscope of colors that greet us and surround us on a daily basis, we’d all go mad for the lack of variety. While we might not spend a lot of time talking about it, color is very important to most people. We are particular about the color of our clothes, our car, our homes, our walls, the shoes we wear, and even the polish we wear on our finger nails. My experience with color goes way, way back to … my childhood. As far as I can remember, my first favorite color was red. I loved all things red and had a favorite red mug.

“It is only after years of preparation that the young artist should touch color – not color used descriptively, that is, but as a means of personal expression.” Henri Matisse

Inspiration: Color And I Are One... The punk rocker look; black clothes and spiked hair

By the time I became an angst filled teenage punk rocker, I had switched loyalties from red to black and burgundy. For me and my teen friends, Black was the color of hipness, of rebellion; the sanctuary of the outsider determined to ignore the crowds. However, in London, we were not the only ones with slashed t-shirts, tight black pants, Vivienne Westwood plaids, colored hair and pins in our noses. Every Sloane ranger and hip kid borrowed something from the look and made it their own. By the time I moved to New York, everyone was wearing black. I tried my hand at navy but it seemed so tepid compared to the brashness of black.

“Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions.” Pablo Picasso

In New York, we talked about color; shades of skin colors and its implications for that matter. Color was political, it was social, and at various points, it was also emotional. I chose my colors carefully; add a bit of this, a touch of that, a smidgen of the other and soon, I was experimenting with colors with names I’d never heard of. I bet Dora could relate…  And then I found yoga or maybe it found me, and my choice of hues shifted to whites and brights. Orange was the thing… Salmon, Saffron, the blue pearl mama. Nobody asked the question Plinky posed: If you could only wear one color for the next month, what would you choose? If they had asked me back then, I would have said, “All colors have value, color and I are one…” More below. 😉

“And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variations in your languages and your colors; verily in that are signs For those who know.” The Qur’an

Time has brought me full circle, and I have reverted, somewhat, to the colors of my youth… Black and Red still hold sway with me, Salmon and Saffron still appeal to me, but I love my whites too. I wear them when I please; to spiritual events, the healing centers or when I darn please. Damn the fashionista who will dare to step in front of me and say… “We don’t wear white after Labor Day!” To that one I would say, “Excuse me? I wear what I please, Color And I Are One…”
What about you? What are your thoughts? What colors do you like? Do you have a favorite shade? If you could choose one color for a month what would it be? Do share! Thank you. 😉

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Plinky: If you could only wear one color for the next month, what would you choose?

Wonderful post! Colour is energy of great power. Colour therapy is only one small aspect of how we can use colour to manage how we feel. By wearing and surrounding us with certain colours we influence ourselves and others.

Many people go through colour phases like you, Eliz, describe it. They are an outward expression of how we feel, but also who we want to belong to. Colour preferences can also change seasonally, weekly, or even daily, according to our mood and needs. Any questions about the trends towards black during recessions and other hard times? Any idea how to counter them? 😉

Ty for your insights Maria. I enjoyed this exercise and could have written more but didn’t want to bore…. I love colors and even though black is a basic color for me, I wear other colors too. In tough times, it represents both the darkness and the struggle. I don’t think we need to counter it; we should just embrace it and move forward with our choices… TY! 🙂

      • 12/10/2011 9:40 pm

“…embrace it and move forward with our choices…” IS the best (perhaps even the only good) way to counter = to balance something 😀

    • 13/10/2011 7:44 pm

Yes, I feel that way lately about things… It helps me stop wondering and worrying. TY! Maria! 🙂

I love the colour Blue myself but a world without colour would be sadly without contrast so you are right to celebrate it. As for what colour you should wear. Whatever you like and whenever as you say

    • 12/10/2011 6:47 pm

Blue is a hugely popular color and I adore it too… and yes, I wear what I please and everyone else should as well. TY! 🙂

Color makes us feel alive, inspired. It makes us feel and express an emotion. It makes our world a better and brighter place to live at. Beautiful post/photos/painting my friend. Stay blessed always.

Ty for your blessings and same coming your way… Color adds pizzazz to everything. I can’t imagine a world without color. TY! 🙂

    Blue/Green/Turquoise/Teal are my faves . . .

Artists can color the sky red because they know it’s blue. Those of us who aren’t artists must color things the way they really are or people might think we’re stupid. ~ Jules Feiffer

Color shapes our appetite for life. Thanks, E!

    • 12/10/2011 6:53 pm

I love the shade you mentioned… especially teal. I don’t know about Jules but I’d color the sky any shade I want and children often do… There’s an artist in all of us… more so in some than others.
Color shapes our appetite for sure. TY! 🙂

As an artist I am all about color. I’ve always used color liberally in any house I’ve ever decorated but most of the time I’m more subdued with my wardrobe.
Love how you worked with this.

One colour for a month? I couldn’t possibly choose! 🙂 nice post!

    • 12/10/2011 6:55 pm

Ha ha! I know it would be a challenge for most… but doable! TY! 🙂

How boring would the world be without colours! As for me, I’m not sure I have a favourite colour. I’m trying to decide what colours to paint the walls of my new appartment and it turns out to be really hard. Who would have thought?

    • 12/10/2011 6:56 pm

Yes, the world would be a boring place without color… Test a few colors on your wall and go with the shade that puts a smile on your face. 🙂

  13. 12/10/2011 2:09 pm

Seamlessly woven post! I greatly admire your writing skills.
If I could only wear one color for the next month, it would be blue. But, I would wear every shade of blue possible!

    • 12/10/2011 6:57 pm

TY for your kind words… I love your blog too… Blue is a great shade and it does come in many shades… Good hunting 😉

Color, for me, conveys emotion and beauty. For those who cannot see color, I wonder how they feel? The emotion and beauty, I imagine, is channeled another way. I feel very fortunate to perceive color and they way light plays upon it. As a brilliant photographer, I can see how color is significant in your life. Your talent reflects that in all the photos you take!

And I would definitely go with black for a month, if I had to…:)

    • 12/10/2011 7:00 pm

I might lean to black too because it is versatile and hides much. I feel the same way you do about the grace of seeing color… I guess the blind perceive emotions in many other ways..
TY for your support. My work is in progress… TY! 🙂

  15. 13/10/2011 3:45 am

    Great photos, E!

Magenta is a favourite colour of mine, as is black. Red I have never been a fan of as far as clothes for me go, as my skin tone and red don’t like each other much. As for rules about when to wear or what age to wear – never have taken a scrap of notice!

    • 13/10/2011 4:50 pm

I like magenta too… in the fall. 🙂 Red suits me even though I don’t wear it as much as I’d like… TY! 🙂

All my students in Japan knew Deborah-sensei’s favorite color: green, followed closely by pink. And yet, in the wake of my return from Japan, I find myself enthralled by the combination of blue and orange, as I remember it from the torii of Miyajima. ♥

    • 13/10/2011 7:49 pm

Actually, I was going to say that green and pink go well together, ditto pink and gray. Blue and Orange sound lovely… I love orange and wear it more now; especially burnt orange/pumpkin. Blue doesn’t quite look good on me… I like it though. TY! 🙂

  17. 14/10/2011 12:17 am

Well Liz, color and I are certainly one:) I have had a love affair with color since I was a child and I first started drawing with colored pencils. And now, it is difficult to be without color when expressing my inner self through my art.
As for clothes, I like the sublime and neutral …. black, blue, gray and a splash of color in small amounts.
Visit my latest posts and you will see lots of colors 🙂

    • 14/10/2011 5:47 pm

I bet, as an artist, you have tons of colors on your posts… I did visit and will stop by again. TY! 🙂

Eliz, I have to ask what a sloane ranger is? You got me on that reference.

  19. 23/10/2011 8:50 am

I can wear anything but I gravitate towards red – my favorite color (love a red dress!) and black because it’s utilitarian.
Colors greatly affect my mood. When I’m in a bold, take-no-prisoners attitude (or want to get there), I wear red. When I want to feel sexy or mysterious, I wear black.
I love white for its freshness but I stop wearing anything white in public when it starts to turn beige.
