Memories: A Few Songs To Remember…

08/10/2011

Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.” Kevin Arnold

Memories: A Few Songs To Remember...Music memories bloom like flowers

Not long ago, I shared some of my favorite songs. Today, I read a post, Bygones, by fellow blogger John, on Blithe and Untroubled Life that got me thinking of the powerful influence music has on our memories. When I listen to a song or hear an oldie played on the radio, I am transported back to a particular time in my life when… X happened; sometimes good and sometimes not so great times. Regardless of the emotions I recall, the songs stay with me and I can cherish them again.

Alicia Keys – Fallin’

Mary J. Blige – Family Affair

Justin Timberlake – Cry Me A River

Musiq SoulchildHalfcrazy

The songs above and below bring back memories of the millennium decade and the challenges I faced. What I find remarkable now is that when I look back to that period, I see the growth and the joy I got from the songs.  So we always, in hindsight, realize that our struggles were not entirely insurmountable… We conquered them … with great music to help us along the way. What about you? More below. 😉

Erykah Badu – Certainly (flipped it) – 2 versions which do you like?

D’AngeloUntitled (How Does It Feel) – 2 versions which do you prefer?

Christina Aguilera – Beautiful

David Pomeranz – Got to believe in Magic

No matter what we are going through in life, we can always find solace in the beautiful, lyrical world of music… The best thing about it is that whatever suits you musically, be it contemporary, classical or crazy, you can find the right genre for you and get your groove on. I never tire of listening to music and while I have favorites, I always open my door and heart to new sounds. Thank God for music. What are your thoughts? What memories attached to songs come to your mind? Do you have any stories to go with your songs? Do share! Thank you. 🙂

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Write a top ten list of your favorite songs and from Mamakat’s Writer’s Workshop: Tell us about your song

Positive Motivation Tip: Music creates and brings back memories of days gone by and special moments to come… enjoy it.

TY Miriam for stopping by… I love music and even though I love a lot of the new stuff, I find myself gravitating to a lot of the old stuff too. 🙂

I wrote an entry recently about five songs that feel as if they’re actually transporting me in time and space, but there are some other songs that have been moving me since. I was actually thinking of doing an entry on the Scrubs soundtrack, which was what I listened to as I set forth on my (second) move to Los Angeles. It was 3:30 or so in the morning, and I watched my siblings wave me off, my brother-in-law holding my dog (who he and my sister watched for the next seven weeks) and making him wave, too. Scrubs feels like home to me, so that I felt like I’d best be able to recreate the feeling of taking home with me by playing that soundtrack to start. I was totally right, and the feeling endures–as I recently (re)discovered! Hold on Hope, Hallelujah and Have it All (which I hadn’t realized were all “H” songs until just now) are my favorites, but all taken together are magic to me.

I haven’t heard the Scrubs soundtrack but will go listen to it now that you mentioned it… I love music and listen to it daily… very relaxing. TY for your feedback. 🙂

I love your motivational tip ! “Music creates and brings back memories of days gone by and special moments to come… enjoy it.”-when I listen to the words of my favorite songs, I can feel for the moment that I am “in the moment” reflecting the past and sometimes the present. Beautiful post!

    • 09/10/2011 11:53 pm

Yes, it is about moments isn’t it? I find music creates loads of them for me too; some from the past and some from the present. TY! 🙂

    • 09/10/2011 11:57 pm

      TY Penny,
Yes, music is about moments; both good and bad ones and we use music to revisit experiences and create new ones; in the past and in the present. TY for your feedback. 🙂

Music is my food and life . . . don’t take it away!

    Thanks, E!

I feel the same way… When all else makes little sense, music stays constant. TY! 🙂

It’s also interesting to be part of a relationship and discover how differently the same music can relate to the same experience. I discovered today for the first time in 40+ years that a song I thought totally inconsequential is one with extreme meaning for my DH.

    • 10/10/2011 12:00 am

That is a great point. There are songs that I remember from years back and when I mention them to friends from that time frame, our memories and reactions are quite different. My kids have memories of me playing the Mary J. Blige song a lot… We laughed about it yesterday…

You are absolutely right: certain songs bring one back to the moment. It gives on a sense of place and time.Gives me an idea for a post. Have a great week, Eliz.

Good for you! I look forward to reading the post when it is written. I know that people feel differently about music and I get it… I’m yet to meet a person who hates all music. TY! 🙂

I love your selection here and the music posts you write. I find music helps me shift my mood too.
I’m a fan of many types of sound but I love spirituals and classical music.

Same here too and thank you for your support.
I do love all kinds of music too. TY! 🙂

Very strong memories come to my mind with certain music. It’s funny how the two have that association. When I was very young (age 17), I met the love of my life and I had hated the song Sultans of Swing but it was playing when we were on a date once and it changed my whole frame of mind… Then, that young man was killed in a fatal accident when he was 22 and yet again, that changed my frame of mind when I heard it. Now decades later, when I hear that song, I am hollow and wistful… Each emotion strong, but changed over many, many years because of that association.

Strangely, Christmas music affects me emotionally as well. It fills me with happiness and comfort. 🙂

Great selection of music here, Elizabeth! Thank you for yet another emotionally provocative post.

Beautiful sharing… We attach strong memories to songs…They bring out our inner deliciousness. 😉 TY! 🙂

I don’t know whats with cry me a river that if i’m hearing that song i always feel sad..They say that this particular song has to do with the real feeling of justin timberlake when Britney spears left him…hahaha that was quite of a showbiz…
Anyway music has been really a part of our lives and so with our experiences. We do remember certain thing or a certain memory by just hearing it.

So we must listen to songs and let us all be inspired..

    • 12/10/2011 6:25 pm

Must be… I do love the song and Justin is so talented…. I enjoyed your post so much that it helped me with mine. TY! 🙂

Oh man, every time I hear “Sexy Back” on the radio, it makes me remember this one time I heard it back in 2006. I was in my mom’s van, and she still drives that van even today, and I had the volume cranked up and I was signing mostly the parts that Timbaland sang in the song. Another song I’ll always remember is “Ain’t Another Man” by Christina Aguilara. I think “Beautiful” was her second single, which came out right after that song. Now, the last song I want to mention is “Numb” by Linkin Park. It’s probably the best rock song I’ve heard. I mostly listen to dance and hip-hop, but I still listen to hit-music sometimes. I don’t really hear any good music anymore like there was in 05′ and 06′.

Beautiful selection, Elizabeth. Music really is the food of life – so let’s play on!
