Weekly Photo Challenge: Sunset…

05/10/2011

“When I admire the wonder of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in worship of the Creator.”  Mahatma Gandhi

I love sunsets even though I used to wonder how photographers captured them.  Whenever I saw a magnificent sunset, I would sit in awe and watch it till it faded away. Sunset are mysterious and deep; often strewn with myriad colors ranging from gold, to red, to orange and even to the darkest purple. Sunsets are full of promise;  reminders that what diminishes, grows back, returns another day. But, does it return the  same?

“Know what you want to do, hold the thought firmly, and do every day what should be done, and every sunset will see you that much nearer the goal.” Elbert Hubbard

When I look through my photo folders, I notice forms and figures, people, places and  endless things… But where is the sunset? Where are the elements that keep us hopeful and grateful to mother nature?  Where are nature’s grand gifts; sunrise, sunset, the weather, the galaxies… Sadly, my files are filed with photos of adventures and things. Most of us capture the faces and places that sparkle before us when we are on vacation, on a a pilgrimage, or in the neighborhood. The sunset shots will come later..

“Happiness is a Swedish sunset; it is there for all, but most of us look the other way and lose it.” Mark Twain

As per my shots, they were taken on two days. Day 1 was gray and cold. day 2 was bright and sunny. I tried to remember the tips I saw in nolagirlatheart’s blog. She had a YouTube video that was quite helpful. Even though I don’t know what a Swedish sunset is, I do like the quote by Twain. Yes, the sun shines and sets on all of us,  but what is the Swedish part to the quote? Let me know. Hope you like these… Come back for more later. 😉
On a sad note, Steve Jobs Co-founder of Apple Inc  passed away today, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. My condolences go out to his family. He was a visionary and a man of action… His pioneering spirit will be missed.

“Lost, yesterday, somewhere between sunrise and sunset, two golden hours, each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered for they are gone forever.” Horace Mann

Now that I have ventured into the world of sunsets, I will practice taking more. Nothing beats the beauty of a setting sun. Nothing is more magnificent than capturing one brilliantly… What are your thoughts? Was it easy/hard to capture your sunset shot? Do you like sunsets or sunrises? Was this prompt fun? Do share? Thank you! 🙂

Positive Motivation Tip: With every sunset comes a sunrise. Don’t despair… Cherish the good and it will return.

It is a lovely time of the day. I agree. We don’t really see them from my home because of all the trees so I go looking for them at the park. TY! 🙂

Those are great shots Eliz! Surprisingly there are some lovely sensets here in Brooklyn that I’ve managed to capture. The one nice thing about the senset is everyone can enjoy it no matter where you are, unless you’re in jail or something…

    • 12/10/2011 6:07 pm

Oh Brooklyn has the best sunsets… I remember from my days living there. Yes, it is free to all to enjoy. TY! 🙂

Great collection of sunsets..I think we have also similarities about wondering on sunsets. Every time I see sunsets I tend to be mesmerized by the beauty of it.I’m also sad about Steve Jobs perhaps his life finally faced its sunset..

Each photo tells a story of a beautiful sunset, unique by its own. Every word you expressed about this beautiful gift of nature is true. My favorite was the quote from Gandhi… I do feel close to the creator whenever a sunset or sunrise unfolds or when a breathtaking nature wonder

    • 12/10/2011 6:12 pm

Me too.. I love the Gandhi quote… Sunsets do bring us closer to our spirit life. TY! 🙂

  15. 07/10/2011 9:36 pm

… or when a breathtaking nature wonder unveils itself. Have a blessed , inspiring weekend my friend.

  16. 07/10/2011 10:35 pm

The pictures remind me of summer. Great pics as usual!

    • 12/10/2011 6:13 pm

TY Miriam… I took them recently and it was a rare warm and sunny day.TY! 🙂

  17. 08/10/2011 7:27 am

I saw this on my iPhone and then again just now on my MacBook… (thanks Steve Jobs- RIP). The colors on the iPhone were not nearly as crisp or beautiful as they are on my MacBook.

Really beautiful shots. But however lovely catching a sunset can be with a lens, I will always feel a sunset is best when you experience the enormity of its beauty in the moment. The best sunsets I ever experienced were when I was in Wailea, Maui… If you can, Elizabeth, go take some more photos, there!! 😉

    • 12/10/2011 6:14 pm

I pray to visit Hawaii in this lifetime. Well, I’ve been to Honolulu but for a very short time. I see such gorgeous photos of the Islands and I wish to visit… I heard the bugs are huge too. 😆 TY!

  18. 08/10/2011 4:48 pm

Well, it is said that a red sunrise means that good weather to come, whereas a red sunset could anticipate bad weather. I read that in a children’s weather book when I was younger. I never captured any sunsets, although I always wanted to. I felt like I did one time, because I remembered it so well. I was around 10 years old, and I saw that sunset over the trees, and there was an orange-blue sky.

    • 12/10/2011 6:16 pm

I love those orangey, blue, purple blends… They make the sky look like a rich painting. Love sunsets. TY! 🙂

Sorry I’m so late to this party–beautiful post! I love both sunrises and sunsets. Both have wonderful drama. The years I lived in Florida, it was a tradition for me to get up on New Year’s Day and drive to a deserted beach by myself and watch the sun rise over the ocean. It was a poignant way to ring in the New Year

    • 12/10/2011 6:18 pm

I used to sit and watch the sun rise and set when I had my apartment in Manhattan. It had windows that captured both… I didn’t take pictures of them then… Such magnificence. Now I’m in the woods and the trees shade everything… well, almost everything. Glad to see you here after sometime. TY! 🙂

You have some pretty beautiful sunsets here, Elizabeth. I love sunrises but sunsets seem to just burst with quiet color and always leave me speechless.
