Happiness: Thank Goodness It’s Saturday…

‘Saturday’s child works hard for a living…’ Before I go any further, I know each day is special and the love we give Monday should be equal to the joy we give Saturday…  All well and good, but this is merely a post about a favorite day of the week that includes a reminder about child labor laws;  we should be concerned about those who use indentured child laborers, and avoid buying products made by said children.  If it weren’t for the fact that today is Saturday, I would have chosen Friday. However, how do you live down a post that screams “Thank God It’s Friday!” on a Saturday and then factor in the possible agida from the restaurant with said name? If we lived in a world where days were counted in numbers only, without corresponding names, would we know the difference? Our maxim for Saturday is … relax, choose happiness and go help someone else.

“Satire is what closes on Saturday night.” George S. Kaufman

Happiness: Thank Goodness It's Saturday... Time to relax...

Humor aside, there is something to be said about the 6th day of the week… It is, typically, the day we relax, lollygag, and/or play catchup on things we couldn’t do during the week. I love Saturday because it is a day to unwind from the push and pull of the week and run a number of easy errands.  One can choose to do nothing but rest and read on Saturday, while others honor it as the Sabbath; a day of reverence and worship. Some of us use that day to also pamper ourselves with hair appointments, Mani-pedis, shopping trips, and possibly a lunch or dinner out to a favorite restaurant. On other Saturdays, friends might be invited over to dine and then watch a movie… For a day sandwiched  between Friday, the end of a work week which many love, and Sunday, a day of worship for some and preparation for the upcoming week, Saturday gives us a moment to pause.

“Every man has a right to a Saturday night bath.” Lyndon B. Johnson

Happiness: Thank Goodness It's Saturday... A child at play on a Saturday...

Monday’s ChildRoud Folk Song Index #19526.
Monday’s child is fair of face
Tuesday’s child is full of grace,
Wednesday’s child is full of woe,
Thursday’s child has far to go,
Friday’s child is loving and giving,
Saturday’s child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay..

I remember this poem as a child and how concerned I was for Wednesday and Saturday’s child. They seemed to get the short end of the stick with woe and labor for company. All the other kids were bright and cheery and going places. Sheesh!  Don’t get me wrong, working hard has its rewards, but you wonder what that means when everyone else is sailing along full of grace and bonny and blithe. For those of us who live in countries where we have the benefit of choice to do what we wish on any given day, we  live charmed lives. Our daily choices are not at the mercy of a dictator ordering us about or of a fortune teller filling our heads with a litany of dos and donts.  We can work or rest on Saturday and  be comforted  by the fact that while our Saturday child works hard for a living, he is monitored and paid fairly for his talent. He can take a bath at night or in the daytime… the right to choose belongs to him on Saturday and every other day.

Please bear with me dear blog friends, I have been swamped and will catch up on commenting on your blogs this weekend… by Sunday! Thank You for the goodwill.  ♥ 🙂 More below…

“Middle age is when you’re sitting at home on a Saturday night and the telephone rings and you hope it isn’t for you.” Ogden Nash

Happiness: Thank Goodness It's Saturday... Don't miss that telephone call...

While sipping a Hot Toddy on a Saturday night, phone call at hand, middle aged or not, it would be wise to reflect on the events of the week that ended and plan the week ahead. Since most people spend the work week looking forward to the weekend, it might be a good or novel idea to focus on each day, and make the best use of it by helping others, instead of looking ahead to a day that hasn’t even arrived. Or better yet, switch it up… We can also kick back and reminisce on a Saturday and not feel guilty. If the phone rings, we can answer it without feeling like a loser. After all, who wouldn’t appreciate a friend’s call any day of the week, regardless of the time of day of the caller? Frankly, some weeks, I’m a Thursday kind of girl because she’s going places… and then at other times, Saturday suits me fine. Get the drift?  😉  What are your thoughts? What is your favorite day of the week? Do you do something special on that day? Do share? Thank you! 🙂

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: What is your favorite day of the week? And why?

Positive Motivation Tip: Everyday is a special day and then we have days we really love… enjoy them all.

Great post, as it has much meaning to me right now as I am approaching retiring from one of my jobs in another week. I will have my special days, for adding adventure and fun time to my life, the first since many years ago. I have much to look forward to ! 🙂

Congratulations Penny! I pray you spend your time doing things you love and that you benefit from your years of hard work. TY! 🙂

I remember that poem and used to worry about Wednesday’s child. I used to wonder if Saturday’s child was more successful in life because they worked so hard.
Child labor in this day and age is such a concern, how do we know which products are produced through child labor?

    • 26/09/2011 1:10 am

WoW! That is great that you had the same experience with that poem as I did. 🙂 Actually, if you do a Google search, lots of information will come up. There have been a few controversies around the subject too… Tons of information on the internet. TY! 🙂

It’s a funny thing about days of the week – for me, each day has a different feel to it. Even when I mess up and am thrown by a holiday, I say it “feels” like a Tuesday, etc. I can’t imagine not have a name for our days and going by numbers alone…but as usual, you make me think! Thanks for an interesting post – Happy Saturday!

I hear you on that and I do find that some people have the same sensation as the days pass… Each one brings its own set of emotions, feelings, plans and such. I sometimes find myself saying that Thursday is a lucky day… I just find a lot of good things on that day… interesting eh? TY! 🙂

so sweet: the child with the goat! TY for choosing such a picture!

    • 26/09/2011 1:13 am

TY too! I thought it was a miniature donkey. 😆 TY! 🙂

My favorite day changes depending on my mood, honestly…I have pretty much always hated Mondays though, for the most part. Saturday was definitely my favorite day of the week THIS week, though! 🙂
I bet you can guess why!

    • 26/09/2011 1:14 am

Yes, I can and I agree with you that our mood has an effect on how we see a day… Happy Birthday in order? 🙂 TY! 8)

I hate Mondays because it starts the work week which shpuld make me think about your last post. Am I doing what I truly love?
I like Saturdays as a reprieve from the busylife but Thursday is my fav. It feels good.
Thanks for this post and for making it even more meaningful with information on child labor.

TY for your kind words… I love Thursdays too! The poem reminded me of child labor abuses and I felt it was a good way to bring up that sordid subject and remind us all to think about it… Thanks again 🙂

  7. 25/09/2011 11:15 am

    I am . . . bonny, blithe, good and gay. 😀

Thanks for the lovely post, E!

    • 26/09/2011 1:15 am

Oh you lucky Sunday child you… 😆 TY! 🙂

So true: the love we give Saturday should be equal to the love we give Monday. Saturday is my “catch-up” day–and I am a Saturday child.
As for child labor: In Ocean City there are loads of young Mexican boys who are illegally working. They need money to send back home.

    • 26/09/2011 1:18 am

Yes, same here on the catch-up! As for the kids in Ocean City, I hope they are paid a decent wage… It is the way child laborers are mistreated that had been a problem. Some talented kids work and as long as they are compensated fairly and given the requisite time off it is fine. In instances of abusive labor. All human rights are ignored…. TY! 🙂

Don’t worry about Wednesday’s child! I have one and he is as sunny as the day is long – and everything falls into his lap! Having said that – I’m a Friday child, and I would say that thankfully, I’m full of grace…..

    😉

    • 26/09/2011 1:19 am

What a lovely and funny comment. TY for clearing the air on this subject and setting my heart at ease… You are full of grace, TY! 🙂

I just need an extra day or two in this month to catch up. I think you do too.

Yes dear Barbara, we all do… I tell you, that pneumonia took a lot out of me and I’m still recovering from the drug side effects… but life must go on. Like you, we do the best we can. TY! sister! 🙂

  11. 25/09/2011 7:23 pm

Cheers to catching up! I’m almost caught up on other folks’ blogs, but it’ll be another week at least until I’m caught up at my own blog! I wonder if it’s akin to the cleaning phenomenon my mom always got on her kids’ cases for: “Why do you help other people clean their houses but don’t do the same here?!”

    • 26/09/2011 1:23 am

“Why do you help other people clean their houses but don’t do the same here?!”
Tell me about it. I get what you are saying. Must be that Catholic guilt again… Sometimes, we just can’t do it all and our bodies insist on the rest it desperately needs. I must listen to my body as I’m still in recovery mode. TY! 🙂

I’m a Sunday child and I remember that poem too. Saturday is probably not my favourite day of the week, as I seem to spend so much of it shopping for food and groceries these days! 😆

I think Sunday is probably my favourite at the moment, nothing to do with my day of birth, just simply it is a day I can rest! Sort of!

    • 27/09/2011 2:56 pm

I understand that… with the current arrangements, it would make sense that Sunday is your true day to rest and catch up… I like the fact that you are one of those luck bonny and blithe Sunday children too… 😆
Do get some rest…. TY! 🙂

  13. 26/09/2011 6:42 am

Just this week, a colleague mentioned that despite some issues at work, she’s still loving and giving, a true Friday’s child. The poem popped into my head but I couldn’t remember what Sunday’s child was, neither could she. Thanks for including this in your post. Now I see that I’m bonny and blithe and good and gay. I sure wish I felt like that!
Sunday’s probably my favorite day but not because it’s my birthday. It’s the day I rest, reflect and plan and prepare for the week ahead. When I was younger, I loved Fridays and hated Sundays because it was the day I had to leave my cousins (fun) and return to school (not so fun).

    • 27/09/2011 3:00 pm

I love Sunday too, although it is the day before all the madness starts another work, school, life, week! Good for you that you are a Sunday child… It seems like I have a few here too. TY Marcia!
Is it our birthday for real? 🙂

  14. 28/09/2011 11:20 am

This past Saturday I was off from work and spent the day with my best friend and my new puppy. My favorite day changes each week (kinda like my work schedule)
