Weekly Photo Challenge: FACES…

21/09/2011

“To a true artist, only that face is beautiful which, quite apart from its exterior, shines with the truth within the soul.” Mahatma Gandhi

Weekly Photo Challenge: FACES... a smile makes a huge difference

Weekly Photo Challenge: FACES... what mood is he in?

Weekly Photo Challenge: FACES... sometimes a mask reveals more about us...

Our faces tell a thousand stories and everywhere we go, they project their message about how we feel and what we are experiencing; joy, sadness, confusion, anger, happiness and many other emotions. Sometimes we wear masks; symbolic or real, to project a completely different message from what we feel, and sometimes our mask reveal who we truly are…  Physiognomy is a form of face reading that gives the reader lots of information about us and helps them to predict a variety of things. Our faces are a stamp on the world; we can welcome others with a smile or a grimace…

“You use a glass mirror to see your face; you use works of art to see your soul.” George Bernard Shaw

Our faces and the many faces we see daily help us recognize the multitude features that identify who we are and where we come from. Our faces carry certain identifying markers that show our group orientation, our ethnicity, our family connections, our age, our gender, and more. So when we meet a face, we begin the process of retrieving identifiers from our memory bank or selecting markers to help us remember who/what we just saw… This is a way we distinguish human faces from non-human faces and everything in between.

“A man’s face is his autobiography. A woman’s face is her work of fiction.” Oscar Wilde

Weekly Photo Challenge: FACES... the human face reveals much about our personal history

Weekly Photo Challenge: FACES... female faces in a charcoal drawing...

I shared a story once about a woman I saw on the NYC subway whose face was etched with years of rage/anger that she must have carried around with her. It reminded me of my mother’s admonishment, “Wipe that grimace off your face… or it will become a permanent look!” I remember being told that a smiling face blossoms and an angry face shrivels…

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face… do the thing you think you cannot do.”  Eleanor Roosevelt

Weekly Photo Challenge: FACES... even peacocks want to say hello...

For this week’s photo challenge on faces, I have selected a wide range of faces that I collected over time. Some are human, some animal, a few are sculptures, and several are masks. I love masks because they speak to the traditions and cultures of people around the world. The masks I showcase are African but I’m sure you have seen others representative of other cultures. I hope you enjoy them. What did you show?  More below… 🙂

“The ideals which have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully have been kindness, beauty, and truth.” Albert Einstein

When we take a moment to look at the faces of people around us, we will begin to notice that each face carries its own biography; telling stories of the bearer and letting us know if they are open to connecting with us or not. The saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul is quite true; when you look in the eyes of other people, you immediately detect their comfort or discomfort with you… We know that a smile lights up a face and that a frown darkens it… so every emotion we express appears on our faces… adding or taking away from our beauty and perhaps our truth.

“If the essence of my being has caused a smile to have appeared upon your face or a touch of joy within your heart. Then in living – I have made my mark.”  Thomas L. Odem, Jr

I know a smile makes a huge difference in our exchange with others. I take a daily walk on the Croton Aqueduct in my area. Some days, I am pensive and look inwards, focusing on my mini radio and the message or music coming from it. People pass me hurriedly, trying to not interrupt my silence or to avoid my facial message that I am currently unavailable… At other times, I smile as a stranger passes me on the aqueduct and they smile back; in that moment, a friendly hello is communicated without words… We do this again and again until one of us musters a verbal hello. A smile does make a difference… What are your thoughts? What kinds of faces did you find? Did you choose human faces or other types of faces? Do share? Thank you! 🙂

I once read: If Jesus met Mohammed or Caesar – maybe they would smile to each other …
    P.S.:
of course I would smile, if we met on the street, Eliz…

Oh TY Frizz and I would smile back… I was trying to explain that we all have days when we are less outgoing and others pick up on it… TY! 🙂

I love this post for many reasons! Most excitedly, I’m going to use your photos with my son to help him identify emotion in faces! You knew I’d do that though inside, didn’t you? You see? You’ve given me yet another gift today in your post… <3

    • 22/09/2011 9:57 pm

TY Karen! You are welcome to use the photos anytime. Glad you enjoyed it… It was a bit of a challenge because I didn’t want to use people’s faces without permission… TY! 🙂

I loved that quote from Oscar Wilde. Not totally politically correct in these changes times but full of the pithy observation he made his own

    • 22/09/2011 10:01 pm

Precisely Peter; spot on! That is why I chose it… so Oscar, so out there TY! 😆

What a wonderful post and collection of faces, E!
Enjoyed them all . . . but my faves are:
    (1) Buddha (serene confidence with a whisper of a smile)
    (2) the Gorilla (serene contemplation)
    (3) Storm King statue or the women in charcoal.

    • 22/09/2011 10:04 pm

Beautiful post. Masks have always intrigged me, you have a good collection here. I especially like your quote:

“To a true artist, only that face is beautiful which, quite apart from its exterior, shines with the truth within the soul.” Mahatma Gandhi

    • 22/09/2011 10:06 pm

TY Penny! I am fascinated by the intricacy and design of masks from around the world… I loved that quote too because it was about the beauty within… 🙂

  11. 22/09/2011 10:26 pm

I know you’ve received this before…. BUT, I had to share this award with you because I just love ya!

    • 22/09/2011 10:29 pm

TY Maggie, You are so generous… 🙂 I appreciate the gift and will stop by your blog to thank you! 🙂 Eliz

The story of the woman on the NYC subway made me think of what my parents used to tell us when we made a silly face: “if your face still looks like that at 12 o’clock, it’s gonna stay that way!” Not sure whether I believed them though 😉

    • 23/09/2011 5:59 am

Oh what a riot! I heard people say that one too and I wondered about it as a kid… Since I didn’t want to find out, I quickly changed my moody face to something safer.TY! 😆

  13. 24/09/2011 4:36 am

We used to get told “the wind will change and your face will stay that way”.

Melbourne is a city reknown for no-one speaking to anyone on public transport. We scurry everywhere not acknowledging our fellow residents, unless we know them personally. Sad. Other cities are not like that. Mr O finds it very strange!

    • 24/09/2011 11:43 am

Actually, I find that most big cities I’ve in or visited are like that… People are rushing about heads down, focus elsewhere until you reach out to them and then they are helpful or not. On the NYC subway, people stand and stare ahead until an entertainer comes on board or some thing happens… Sadly, we all get used to it. TY for your feedback! 🙂

  14. 24/09/2011 7:27 am

So many inspring images and beautiful words. You moved the theme “face” to the next level. A level of meaningful and motivational words that the touches the heart. Have a blessed day my friend.

    • 24/09/2011 11:45 am

Oh dear one, now that is a huge compliment because your post on FACES really took it to a fantastic, creative level… I still think of how you presented it and go WoW!
      TY for your feedback 🙂

  15. 27/09/2011 11:18 am

I missed one! That gorilla is so expressive!
Nice lineup of faces, Elizabeth. They all tell a story. I love what your mom used to tell you. Now we understand.

  16. 27/09/2011 1:45 pm

TY Marcia! I loved watching the gorillas at the zoo and spent some extra time when I went to the Bronx Zoo… Yes, apparently a frown can be forever. 🙂
