Inspiration: Four Documentaries Worth Seeing…. Pray The Devil Back To Hell…

Pray The Devil Back To Hell

Directed by Gini Reticker and produced by Abigail Disney, this is a powerful documentary about a dynamic women’s movement in Liberia.  The Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace was organized by social worker Leymah Gbowee, and became a powerful voice to reckon with in a country that had been fractured by war and violence. This documentary presents the enormous effort the peace movement called Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace made to bring harmony and change to war torn Liberia. The peaceful resistance and brave actions by a group of bold women led to the movement that resulted in the election of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in Liberia. Worth a go see.

“It is difficult to produce a television documentary that is both incisive and probing when every twelve minutes one is interrupted by twelve dancing rabbits singing about toilet paper.” Rod Serling

Inspiration: Four Documentaries Worth Seeing…. YogaWoman….

YogaWoman: Never Underestimate the power of inner peace.

On Thursday, I attended the NYC movie premiere of this timely documentary on the contributions of women to the ever popular and growing yoga movement. It showcases the beginnings of the yoga movement in the USA and how some of the most popular female teachers started their journey. The documentary tells not only their stories, but the movement’s continued growth around the world.

Directed by Kate McIntyre and Saraswati Clere and produced by Michael S. McIntyre (he was also director of photography), Kate and Saraswati, it was filmed in 9 countries and includes the voices/interviews with 50 of the leading female yoga experts. The YogaWoman DVD can be bought on the YogaWoman site which I also added above. Worth a go see.

“I’d like to see a nature film where an eagle swoops down and pulls a fish out of a lake, and then maybe he’s flying along, low to the ground, and the fish pulls a worm out of the ground. Now that’s a documentary.”  Jack Handy

Inspiration: Four Documentaries Worth Seeing… Hannah Hauxwell – An Extraordinary Life

Hannah Hauxwell: An Extraordinary Life DVD

I must say that Patrecia at MissWhiplash introduced me to the exquisite and remarkable story of the life and hard times of Hannah Hauxwell; a now 85 year old woman who was living under trying circumstances and poverty on a beautiful farm in the Yorkshire Dales in the UK.  In 1972, Yorkshire TV made a documentary about her struggles, and then, ITV documented her trials in 1973. Other documentaries followed and Hannah has become quite famous for her adventures.

The Hannah Hauxwell – An Extraordinary Life DVD which I purchased through Amazon UK has the original and first 3 stories of Hannah’s saga;  Too Long A Winter, A Winter Too Many and Innocent Abroad. It was directed/produced by Barry Cockcroft and executive produced by Grant McKee. Worth a go see.

“If you want to tell the untold stories, if you want to give voice to the voiceless, you’ve got to find a language. Which goes for film as well as prose, for documentary as well as autobiography. Use the wrong language, and you’re dumb and blind.” Salman Rushdie

Inspiration: Four Documentaries Worth Seeing… The Glow Project…

The Glow Project: The Movie Behind The Project

The GLOW Project movie, created and produced by Stacey Yancey, and executive produced by Kym Yancey, is a documentary featuring “15 prominent corporate achievers and successful entrepreneurs,” all remarkable women ,who share their personal journey to success. Many of them had incredibly challenging lives and their stories serve as an inspiration to the rest of us. The Glow Project also spearheaded a fantastic program that was created to inspire, motivate and empower women.

The initiative/program includes other complementary components that complete the Glow picture of finding ways to support and empower women. They are: The GLOW Project Movie, MyGLOW.net Community, GLOW Project Live Events, GLOW Project Training Events, and The GLOW Project Philanthropic Initiative. Worth a go see. What are your thoughts? What documentaries have you seen recently? Do you have any special ones you’d like to recommend? Do share! Thank you. 🙂

I recently saw a documentary called “Been rich all my life” about a bunch of showgirls who danced at the Cotton Club and others in New York in the 1930’s. They met up when they were in their 70’s and formed a dance group, and performed for many years. Funny, inspiring, and sad. http://www.tootscrackin.com/braml_story.htm
