Music brings people together and helps us find common ground during special and difficult times… When I am feeling run down, rejuvenated, reflective, I turn to music to refresh my mind, to relax and tune inside for answers. This post is in response to the Daily Post suggestion that we find ten favorite songs to share… Some are old and others and in between but what they all share is a timelessness…

When I listen to music, I find myself revisiting places that hold good memories and sometimes places that bring back an evocative feeling of peace and joy. We can’t fail with music as everyone has favorites and can choose new songs to add to any list.

I like the quote from Albert Einstein, especially about seeing life through music… Also I find that I love all kinds of music; including songs written in other languages… The language of music is so universal that we can enjoy songs from other cultures and traditions and not feel limited by barriers of any sort. Music transcends everything and the beauty of a song carries us to ancient and restful places regardless of the language of the song… I find that quite remarkable.

I’ve always loved this song by the rock group Poison; even though the video is so, so. The song was one of many I listened to in the heady 1980s, and I have added it here to share with you because every time I hear it on the radio or elsewhere, it puts a smile on my face…and that is what makes music so satisfying, isn’t it? Well as you know Liz, music plays a large part in my life. It is a constant companion to my everyday activities. I am really impressed with your inclusion of the works of Coltrane and Monk, especially My Favorite Things. ( Please note the fantastic piano playing by McCoy Tyner). And we cannot forget that other great musician Miles Davis, who is my favorite jazz musician.
Music heals the body and the mind like no other instrument. It, like art, has its own impulse that resonates with our soul.

You got Sade on your list. That’s a great artist. When I was a baby, my mom played “Smooth Operator” and I would rock to sleep. When I was around 10, my mom played the CD all the time, and that was my favorite song to sing along to. Some of her other songs that were very dark and soulful made me think of when my brother was born and we were at the hospital.
I love Sade’s music too and played it a lot… I even had Smooth Operator on my answering machine… years ago! TY for your comment… just saw it. 🙂
