Music: Ten Favorites For The Road…

18/09/2011

“Music fills the infinite between two souls. This has been muffled by the mist of our daily habits.” Rabindranath Tagore

Amazing Grace – Cecilia

‘Round Midnight – Thelonius Monk

Music brings people together and helps us find common ground during special and difficult times… When I am feeling run down, rejuvenated, reflective, I turn to music to refresh my mind, to relax and tune inside for answers.  This post is in response to the Daily Post suggestion that we find ten favorite songs to share… Some are old and others and in between but what they all share is a timelessness…

“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Love Supreme – John Coltrane

Water No Get Enemy – Fela Kuti

Bob Marley – WAR

War live – Bob Marley

When I listen to music, I find myself revisiting places that hold good memories and sometimes places that bring back an evocative feeling of peace and joy. We can’t fail with music as everyone has favorites and can choose new songs to add to any list.

“Where words fail, music speaks.” Hans Christian Andersen

The Sweetest Taboo SadeAdu/Sade

Fire on the Mountain – Asa

There are times when words can’t express what we are feeling or words are insufficient for what we are experiencing; that is when music offers its best insights and even answers. I find at times like that, it is best to turn to the sounds that we love; jazz, classical, R &B, spirituals and many others and listen to them without interruptions…

“If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music. … I get most joy in life out of music.” Albert Einstein

Music: Ten Favorites For The Road… Behind the Music…

I like the quote from Albert Einstein, especially about seeing life through music… Also I find that I love all kinds of music; including songs written in other languages… The language of music is so universal that we can enjoy songs from other cultures and traditions and not feel limited by barriers of any sort. Music transcends everything and the beauty of a song carries us to ancient and restful places regardless of the language of the song… I find that quite remarkable.

“Life is like music; it must be composed by ear, feeling, and instinct, not by rule.” Samuel Butler

Every Rose Has Its ThornPoison

I’ve always loved this song by the rock group Poison; even though the video is so, so. The song was one of many I listened to in the heady 1980s, and I have added it here to share with you because every time I hear it on the radio or elsewhere, it puts a smile on my face…and that is what makes music so satisfying, isn’t it? What are your thoughts? What favorite song would you add to the list? Do you have any stories to go with your songs? Do share! Thank you. 🙂

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Write a top ten list of your favorite songs.

Positive Motivation Tip: Music will always soothe those hurting and happy places… find your rhythm and enjoy!

Well as you know Liz, music plays a large part in my life. It is a constant companion to my everyday activities. I am really impressed with your inclusion of the works of Coltrane and Monk, especially My Favorite Things. ( Please note the fantastic piano playing by McCoy Tyner). And we cannot forget that other great musician Miles Davis, who is my favorite jazz musician.
Music heals the body and the mind like no other instrument. It, like art, has its own impulse that resonates with our soul.
Thanks for sharing this post. I will be returning to my 30 Day Song Challenge in just a bit.
    Walter

Music is magical, as words flow with balancing my thoughts. So many times, I can be deliberating on a thought, and hearing a song with the right words-brings it all together. Great post ! enjoyed !

Yes to everything you said… the jazz greats made some fantastic music that we still listen to … TY! 🙂

  16. 20/09/2011 9:32 pm

Now this is a list that can just “take me away.” Coltrane is a god.

    • 22/09/2011 6:24 am

Coltrane is simply out of this world as a brilliant jazz musician. TY! 🙂

  17. 22/09/2011 6:23 am

Sade is truly wonderful… TY! 🙂

  18. 19/10/2011 6:58 pm

You got Sade on your list. That’s a great artist. When I was a baby, my mom played “Smooth Operator” and I would rock to sleep. When I was around 10, my mom played the CD all the time, and that was my favorite song to sing along to. Some of her other songs that were very dark and soulful made me think of when my brother was born and we were at the hospital.

    • 18/01/2012 12:05 am

I love Sade’s music too and played it a lot… I even had Smooth Operator on my answering machine… years ago! TY for your comment… just saw it. 🙂
