Weekly Photo Challenge: Textured…

14/09/2011

“Affluence was, quite simply, a question of texture … The threadbare carpets of infancy, the coconut matting, the ill-laid linoleum, the utility furniture … had all spoken of a life too near the bones of subsistence, too little padded, too severely worn.”  Margaret Drabble

Weekly Photo Challenge: Textured... Swirls; close up of an oil painting...

Textures: 1.A structure of interwoven fibers or other elements. 2. The distinctive physical composition or structure of something, especially with respect to the size, shape, and arrangement of its parts: The appearance and feel of a surface. 3. The quality given to a piece of art, literature, or music by the interrelationship of its elements Free Dictionary Online

All of life is textured and we gravitate to things; symbols, images, elements that appeal to us. Sometimes, we are drawn to soft and fuzzy things and at other times to solid and heavy things. But regardless of what we see and choose, we notice things more when we pay attention… an important lesson to learn about life in general. But it is interesting to see what we get drawn to again and again.

“The web, then, or the pattern, a web at once sensuous and logical, an elegant and pregnant texture: that is style, that is the foundation of the art of literature.” Robert Louis Stevenson

When I saw the new assignment last Friday, I was concerned that I won’t have any or enough textured things to share. Frankly, the subject didn’t interest me one bit. But, as I contemplated the idea and saw the beautiful textured things my blog buddies and others shared, I slowly started to get excited about this challenge. As I paid closer attention to the colors and textures around me, I found things that fit and they are here today.

Symbolism is no mere idle fancy or corrupt regeneration: it is inherent in the very texture of human life” Alfred North Whitehead

Weekly Photo Challenge: Textured... my favorite tree trunk; so textured, so human like

By now, you know that I enjoy looking at each photo challenge from a philosophical viewpoint. I find that it helps me conceptualize the assignments and make connections between what we see and what we think. As I gathered my shots for this Photo Challenge, it made sense to me that the stories of our lives, the very fabric of our lives are filled with textured experiences and exchanges that have helped us form our personal histories; some soft, some hard, some colorful and others nuanced… and with them come lifetime reminders; shown through the interrelationship of elements around us. More below… 🙂

“In shape, it is perfectly elliptical. In texture, it is smooth and lustrous. In color, it ranges from pale alabaster to warm terra cotta. And in taste, it outstrips all the lush pomegranates that Swinburne was so fond of sinking his lyrical teeth into.” Anon

Weekly Photo Challenge: Textured... Foliage and fruit; each uniquely textured...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Textured... Fabric; paisley in a shawl...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Textured... A lit room with many textures...

As we spend time observing our surroundings, paying attention to the textures and sounds that are around us, we begin to understand the magical nature of the world we live in. We exist in a three dimensional world that is as fascinating as it is textured. The textures add to the beauty and richness of our lives and we couldn’t function effectively without the presence of all these textures/elements around us… Enjoy them!  What are your thoughts? What textured things did you find? Did you enjoy the hunt for ideal examples of textured? Do share? Thank you! 🙂

I loved the textured pieces you chose but what I enjoyed most was the fact that you look at each challenge from a philosophical viewpoint. I feel a little the same way. I really enjoyed the entire read etc. thank you.

    • 16/09/2011 3:42 am

TY Mezza for your comment and yes, I find that approach helps me make sense of each challenge and gather my thoughts too. 🙂

  4. 15/09/2011 4:13 am

Love it, especially all the peacock feathers! 🙂
Reminds me of going to the zoo about a month ago with my friend and getting the peacock feather from her little son.

    • 16/09/2011 3:43 am

TY Sharon, I liked the way they set up the lighting for the peacock feathers too… I remember your post as well. 🙂

TY Cecelia… as I thought about the assignment it made more sense about life being textured… TY! 🙂

  6. 15/09/2011 6:10 am

Lovely examples of texture. I agree, our three dimensional world does provide interesting textural counterpoints.

Say, Elizabeth, are you still not getting my posts? I did some tinkering in the background, let me know. Thanks!

Great post, really enjoyed your photos. I look forward to the weekly photo challenge, often unsure if I have anything that will fit the bill, but usually I find something suitable, or that works in some way.
    Look forward to more

Yes, that photo looks so human like… It makes me laugh too. TY! 🙂

  11. 15/09/2011 6:36 am

your metaphorical bridge today is great again:
    “the stories of our lives,
the very fabric of our lives
are filled with textured experiences and exchanges
that have helped us form our personal histories…”

    • 16/09/2011 3:46 am

TY frizztext, glad you enjoyed this post… 🙂

  12. 15/09/2011 10:05 am

At this point, I just have to say that I would definitely buy a beautiful coffee table book with your pictures and writing. You’re an artist, Elizabeth and you should memorialize the beauty of your photos and writing with a beautiful book! 🙂

    • 16/09/2011 3:50 am

TY so much Karen… I would need to take better photos, but you are giving me some great ideas. TY for the support. 🙂

  13. 15/09/2011 11:08 am

My wife would love the woven bag in gold. Each photo is a beautiful version of texture. I like the Buddha. ” I seek peace, happiness and prosperity for all of us.” have a blessed day my friend.

    • 16/09/2011 3:51 am

TY dear one… I love that bag too and the Buddha was very calming for me…TY! 🙂

  14. 15/09/2011 11:55 am

You always amaze me Elizabeth. Where do you find the time??

    I do love the tree.

The sentiments are mutual Barb… I lose a few hours of sleep trying to catch up and complete visit to others… You know, all the stuff you do too. TY! 🙂

  15. 15/09/2011 6:26 pm

    Great examples of texture. 🙂

I found this challenge much more interesting than I originally thought it would be. That’s often the case when I take a little time to let something grow on me rather than dismiss it right away. It took me a lot of years to learn that lesson, of course. lol!

    • 16/09/2011 3:53 am

I hear you! and yes, I’m learning that lesson as I go along and especially with the photo challenge. I start out not knowing I have the right photos and then, it builds from there… TY Robin 🙂

  16. 15/09/2011 7:04 pm

Yet again another great collection of photos.

  17. 15/09/2011 11:21 pm

Moments become hours become days become weeks . . . all woven into the textured tapestry of our lives.

    • 16/09/2011 3:55 am

Yes indeed. It is amazing how when we plug our minds into a word, and hold onto it, it starts to reveal its message… TY! 🙂

  18. 15/09/2011 11:48 pm

Great photo entries. I agree with your reflections of life and our surroundings. On another note, don’t you just love keeping up with continuing education credits? I retired my license for a while, reactivated, then had to retire it again. By then the state board changed how we renew/reactivate it. Can be a pain in the you know what. 🙂

    • 16/09/2011 3:58 am

TY! Yes, the renewal process is a pain and then all the fees have shot though the roof… You’d think in a down market, accommodations would be made… 🙁 TY for understanding. I have one more class coming up and then I am done. Phew! TY 🙂

  19. 16/09/2011 11:01 am

These pictures are great! Guess you worried for no good reason about not having any pictures to share.

    • 17/09/2011 10:53 pm

TY… guess I did. I’m always amazed how it works out in the end. 🙂

  20. 19/09/2011 4:40 pm

You may not have liked the assignment, but you certainly did find some beautiful textures. I really like the tree and also shawl.

    • 19/09/2011 10:43 pm

Oh TY Robyn, Isn’t that something? I didn’t think I had anything to offer, but over several days, and thanks to all of you, ideas came rushing in and it worked… TY 🙂
