Reflections: A Bucket List For The Seasons Of Life…

06/09/2011

“I tell you the past is a bucket of ashes, so live not in your yesterdays, not just for tomorrow, but in the here and now. Keep moving and forget the postmortems; and remember, no one can get the jump on the future.”  Carl Sandburg

Do you have a “bucket” list? Nyet? Why not? When I first read the DailyPost prompt on creating a bucket list, I was amused… It’s not a bad idea to have plans and goals of what we’d like to accomplish in the coming months and years, but a list of what to do before kicking the proverbial bucket struck me as morbid. We can still enjoy our lives without having a to-do list, as long as we make every moment, every engagement, every opportunity to live and learn, an enjoyable one. Nevertheless, I relented and actually had fun with the exercise… thinking of lots of creative and fun things we can all do. What would you add to my list?

“Asking is the beginning of receiving. Make sure you don’t go to the ocean with a teaspoon. At least take a bucket so the kids won’t laugh at you.”  Jim Rohn

I don’t plan that way but like a combination: planned, fluid, organic and spontaneous events and things to do. Imagine you had one year to live?  6 months? 3 months?  One month?  What would you want to do differently?  There are places to visit and fun stuff to do… I have put together a list of things to do over time… No restrictions, no worries. no deadlines. Choose to do what you wish, at your leisure… More below. 😉

Even if we do several things or just a few on the bucket list I added to this post, what matters more is that we had fun and cherished memories to take home with us. It is  not so much that we have accomplished things and seen the world but that we felt the inner joy of contentment and that it touched us and others around us too. What are your thoughts? What things do you have on your bucket list? What is holding you back? Do share! Thank you. 🙂

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Write your bucket list – a list of things you want to do before you kick the bucket.   If you find this topic banal, come up with 5 new euphemisms for dying.

Positive Motivation Tip: Follow you heart’s dream, engage your list, and live your life…

There is so much energy expressed in this blog! Such positive and proactive ideas.

    cheers
    Lorraine

    Hi Lorraine,
Thanks for the feedback… I tried to add things that both interest me and others; so maybe there are things you’d like to do too… I love lists but don’t want to be wedded to them… It actually turned out to be a fun exercise as other ideas came to mind….
Enough for a lifetime I suppose. TY! 🙂

  3. 07/09/2011 12:28 am

Eliz, I love the list…even if it is not your bucket list. 🙂 The older I get, the more I realize that we need to do some things that we plan and some things that are spontaneous. We need to do some things that are in our comfort zone and some things that take us far outside of it. We need to do some things that make us feel good and some things that make others feel good…which in turn will make us feel good.:)

    • 07/09/2011 12:36 am

True and I have deliberately made this such a list; an eclectic mix of things I and others can enjoy. Naturally, there are things that don’t interest us as we humans have our quirks, but then there are things we cherish and so we do them…
It is MY bucket list but not specific to just me… TY Viv! 🙂

Nice post. Always love your thoughts and images. Still messed up by trying to switch to WP.org. Hope to be able to post again on Postaday soon. At least I can still read.

      Hi Katherine,
Thank you for your feedback on this post. 🙂 Oh dear, you moved your blog? Hang in there and I hope you work out the kinks. Did you avail yourself of the WP staff offer to help people move their blogs for a fee like $99? I hope so…

Please keep us posted on your blog move. TY! 🙂

you wrote: “…a list of what to do before kicking the proverbial bucket struck me as morbid. We can still enjoy our lives without having a to-do list, as long as we make every moment..”
    yes…

    • 07/09/2011 4:21 am

Yes, enjoy your life and times with or without a list… 🙂 I’m sure you do too. 🙂

  6. 07/09/2011 6:08 am

I think I mentioned it before. There’s a movie called The Bucket List. It has Jack Nicholson & Morgan Freeman. It’s great – funny, sad, poignant.

    • 07/09/2011 8:13 am

Yes Narelle, I found a blurb on Wikipedia and checked it out on my Amazon list. I think I could watch it for free… I don’t know yet. TY! 🙂

  7. 07/09/2011 6:10 am

Yeah, a Bucket List is a bit morbid but can be a fun exercise. BLs allow us to dream, let our minds expand and in that state, nothing’s impossible, nothing’s out of bounds. The exercise alone brings pleasure, just like reading your list gave me joy.
The reality is, I could do something everyday for the rest of my life and still have things left over.
As you point out, the important thing is to enjoy one’s life and bring joy to the planet.

    • 07/09/2011 8:16 am

Aye! Aye! and then some… I don’t always get the need to box everything up, plan within an inch of our lives, line them up like ducks in a row, and then fret that there isn’t enough time, money, energy and such to barrel down a list… It is fun enough to dream and create and then ,… Que sera sera! Entiende! 🙂

  8. 07/09/2011 6:36 am

I think the “bucket list” idea is American and I had never heard of it until I saw the film with Jack Nicholson, (which I really enjoyed). That being said it is a great concept but I hav’nt made one yet, Now wheres my pen

    • 07/09/2011 8:11 am

Yes, it is probably an American concept. I never saw the movie of the two dying men, but I read that the reviews were tepid. Interesting exercise though… TY! 🙂

  9. 07/09/2011 8:55 am

What an exotic, exciting list of things to do!! There are lots of them I love but I’m pretty sure I could not make 3 new friends a week if I also sang my favorite song to an audience at a Karaoke Bar! 😉

(1 more day of closing- we ended mid-close yesterday. I’ll be back tomorrow!)

    • 07/09/2011 9:11 am

LOL! I couldn’t either, nor is here time to go looking for three chicas on the street! But we try eh? Glad to hear things are wrapping up on your end. I do hope you;d take a moment to breathe before jumping back in the fray. Cheers! 🙂

  10. 07/09/2011 9:26 am

I love your bucket list (and this post!). I don’t have one. Maybe it’s time I sat down and started making one. 🙂

    • 07/09/2011 9:40 am

Well TY Robin! It was done on a bit of a whim, as reluctantly as possible, and then I got into it. TY for the feedback! 🙂

  11. 07/09/2011 10:07 am

What an energetic list you have! I have never written down all the things I want to do, but I did accomplish two this summer: Returning to the Cayman Islands and taking our son for his first scuba lesson (the week was everything I could have hoped for!) and going to see a Beach Boys concert (why I put that one off until now is beyond me!) So little time–so much to do! Thanks for the inspiration, as always!

    • 07/09/2011 10:22 am

TY Freedom! Good for you to at least do the Cayman Islands and get some well deserved R and R. Yeah, I feel the same way… so much to do, so little time, and then lists! 😆

  12. 07/09/2011 11:10 am

What an impressive bucket list – great examples 🙂

    • 08/09/2011 8:20 pm

TY Maria! Glad you like them… It became a fun exercise once I committed to coming up with a wide range of things w could aim to do… If I do them all that would be an awesome lifetime of fun. 🙂

  13. 07/09/2011 11:40 am

I really have no desire to create a bucket list. It’s not even about it feeling morbid, but more about projecting the future. I’ve had so many big changes lately the thought of projecting anything beyond tomorrow would be a stretch.

You really had fun with it and that’s how it should be.
    Thanks for a fun post!

    • 08/09/2011 8:21 pm

I hear you and you are busy with a full plate… that is enough of a bucket list Barb. Exactly, I had fun with this and now I can come back and check out ideas of things to do or see… It was fun TY! 🙂

  14. 07/09/2011 3:31 pm

There was a prompt from the #trust30 challenge where I devised a quasi-bucket list. I am just not that organized. Besides, do I win anything nice if I complete them all? Just a thought. Miriam

    • 08/09/2011 8:23 pm

Oh you make me laugh Miriam… Yes, you win all the toys if you complete all the tasks.. Where is your quasi-bucket list? You should blog on it and have some fun… 🙂

what a riot! I love some of your combos and could feel the joy of the exercise.
That is good enough for me too and then if I achieve any of the fun things, the blessing is there.
    Loved this! 🙂

    • 08/09/2011 8:26 pm

TY and I’m glad you picked up on the fun and joyful air.. that was the delight of trying to overcome my own misgivings about the concept…
So, I did stretch myself after all. TY for pointing that out. 🙂

  16. 07/09/2011 5:19 pm

There is such a fast-moving rhythm to this list. It made me anxious–in a good way. Makes me think of all the things I need or want to do, makes me dream.

    • 08/09/2011 8:29 pm

Oh dear, I hope the anxiety passed because this wasn’t meant to be a challenge but an invitation to celebrate the things we imagine doing; even if only in our heads. 😆
I read your adult list and it was a riot … so you did overcome the twinge then, right?. 🙂

  17. 07/09/2011 11:02 pm

I think bucket lists help motivate us to do more than just pass time in front of the TV. If I hadn’t started a bucket list, I probably wouldn’t have accomplished as much as I had this summer. If I get them all crossed off, or never get any done, it is something that make me think and want to enjoy life more.

    • 08/09/2011 8:32 pm

Good for you then… It can be a motivator if one likes to work with a list but we can still do stuff without a list… I shop with a list but I don’t necessarily live my life with a list… I like the combination of spontaneity and planning; keeps life interesting, no? TY Souza lady! 🙂

  18. 07/09/2011 11:31 pm

Fun list, E! The path beckons us forward . . . revel in uncertainty. Explore, Dream, Discover.

    Aah . . . that’s better!

    • 08/09/2011 8:33 pm

TY Nancy! Yep, I’m all for the reveling… 😆

  19. 08/09/2011 5:43 am

You are going to be very busy! 😆 Great list! I am catching up – it has been a hectic week.

    • 08/09/2011 8:36 pm

Hi lady, I’m not leaving town anytime soon. The list was a chance to push through and break out of my shell a bit. I had fun imagining the lists and had great fun with it. I’m happy for the process and anything I do on it will be icing… TY! 🙂

  20. 08/09/2011 8:15 am

What a fun post! What a fun list! I saw some things on your list that I’ve already done (skydiving, mountain climbing, learning a new language, etc.) and I also saw a lot that I haven’t done but will put on my bucket list (start my own healing/counseling business, write a book, learn to tango [in Argentina]). The act of imagining the possible is one of the most rejuvenating exercises I know. And then to seek to make it happen … I think I will go work on my list. There are definitely things in life I want to accomplish and experience while I’m here. Thanks for sharing your list with us. 🙂

    • 08/09/2011 8:40 pm

“The act of imagining the possible is one of the most rejuvenating exercises I know.” Brilliant and I agree because this post fired my imagination and nudged me. 🙂
Sure, there are things on the list that are important to me and I will pursue them… Then there are whimsies which are worth a try, and then stuff I’ve already done or need to do, and then on and on… I had fun with it and I’m glad you enjoyed it too. Bravo that you’ve done a bunch too. 🙂

  21. 10/09/2011 12:38 am

May you fulfill ALL your goals on your Bucket List! 🙂
