Weekly Photo Challenge: UP!

Up is such a positive word on all levels and so this week’s prompt gave me much to celebrate and recall. We spend our hours looking forward, sideways, and even sometimes downwards, but to look up is to look for hope and joy and things that fascinate us… I’m always in awe of the skyline in major cities and the things we see when we take a moment to look up.

“We had the sky up there, all speckled with stars, and we used to lay on our backs and look up at them, and discuss about whether they were made or only just happened.” Mark Twain

I find that when we look up around us, we are often caught by the surprise of a glimpse of something we might have ignored… a curve in a staircase, the beautiful colors in the sky, even the moldings in a ceiling; all add a sparkle to our feeling of being uplifted. We can then look for more signs of the positive to take home with us…

“Every so often, I like to go to the window, look up, and smile for a satellite picture.” Stephen Wright

Sometimes what we see is different from what we expect,  but the shots capture an essence in the sky that give us promise… like a sudden rainbow appearing in the skyline after a short late afternoon rain shower…  This one appeared suddenly and soon formed a double rainbow.  I love the surprise of rainbows and their message of hope.

“And when it rains on your parade, look up rather than down. Without the rain, there would be no rainbow.” G. K. Chesterton

At the end of the day, our up moments can be at eye level or in the sky and that is fine…  Up is a commanding word; get up, look up, show up, turn up, stir it up, all positive calls to action. We can follow the exhortation and turn our dull moments to rejuvenating ones… What matters is how we feel when we see things that stir our hearts and make us joyful. I hope you enjoyed your UP shots. What are your thoughts? What Up shots did you find? Did you enjoy the process of matching shots for this one? Do share? Thank you! 🙂

I read a comment (can’t remember where) that NYers don’t look up. Probably true — there’s so much to see at eye level. But when we look up, it’s a whole new city!
I like your comment that looking up is positive and hopeful — it sure is!

  2. 01/09/2011 12:38 am

TY for your comment Marcia! We don’t look up much but when we do — magic! 🙂

Some amazing photos – I love the architecture of these buildings – and the rainbow was beautiful

    cheers

    P.S.:
    “When some Bossa Nova musicians
    stopped to play with me,

    I looked up and noticed,
    that would be the chance

to play more blues and gospel
    again on my guitar…

Behold the great , beautiful version of up. Each photo is both an awe and wonder. Those structures are simply amazing. I wish I can see them one day.

    • 01/09/2011 9:45 pm

Oh TY! You are so kind with your compliments and I appreciate the fact that you liked the shots. I do tend to look up when I’m in cities because I’m curious about the architecture which I always love… TY! 🙂

You know what you need? Some photos taken by you in Australia! 😀

    • 01/09/2011 9:47 pm

I look forward to visiting Australia someday. It is at the top of my list… though so far away… It would be great to visit all the hotspots and take tons of photos… TY! 🙂

I don’t know how to put photos up but I really enjoyed these

    • 01/09/2011 9:52 pm

Oh Peter, you can check in with WP Support and they have a manual to help you upload pictures or use Zemanta to click and paste suggested photos to your blog. It is quite easy. I will look for the link and share it with you…
It does get addictive and then, if like me, you are constantly collecting photos. I love to shot random photos lately so I can have choices for the challenges when they appear. I use them regularly now; mine and theirs (Wikipedia’s).
TY for enjoying this post! 🙂

Great photos & post, Eliz! One of my favorite sayings with the word “up”:
“50% of Life is just showing up.”

    • 01/09/2011 9:53 pm

Yes, it is about showing up… and that is what I loved about the UP challenge, it was all about the uplift and the positive… TY! 🙂

I’m glad that you know Tokyo tower. It’s an old symbol in Tokyo.
I know Big Ben although I have never been to there..

    • 01/09/2011 9:55 pm

I enjoyed our visit to Tokyo Tower and the top needle part was so scary and the air so thin up there that I felt dizzy… We took an extra elevator to get to the top part… Overall, I had a great time there with my kids shooting pictures… TY! 🙂

When you look up you see the beauty that has been created by the Creator then you know what true beauty is

    • 01/09/2011 9:56 pm

Well said Pat! It is about connecting with the creator within… Up and way to the heavens. I loved this one. TY! 🙂

  11. 01/09/2011 10:47 am

Great photos as always Elizabeth. I am fascinated with the sky, whether clear blue or dark and stormy, there’s always something magical in looking up.
    Thanks!

I agree… as a child, I used to look outside on wistful day and write stories in the clouds; each changing cloud pattern created a new story and the characters and locations changed… I was creatively observing my surroundings, and the sky still pulls that out of me. TY! 🙂

  12. 01/09/2011 1:43 pm

Wonderful shots, E! I love looking UP . . . as long as a flock of birds isn’t flying overhead. 😉

    • 01/09/2011 9:59 pm

Yes, the bird poop we can avoid… I love o look up too… I did have poop fall on my head in NYC once… it was not fun. TY! 😆

I love your selections too and the buildings look so majestic against the skyline.
The Tokyo Tower must have been amazing. The sky over the Connecticut River took my breath away.
    Up is definitely better. 🙂

“Up” is such a great theme. I did a whole month of it a year or two ago. It was fun.

Well done on capturing “up.” 🙂

    • 01/09/2011 10:03 pm

I always read your posts but just couldn’t find the right words to express how inspiring your posts have always been. Thank you!

Love that first line of Louisa May Alcott: Far away, there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. Such hope in those words! And thanks for the mention–can’t wait to see all the Up Challenges–you’ve saved me some time by posting them!

    • 03/09/2011 12:07 pm

TY Too! I loved the quote very much and thought it would be perfect for the post… The Up Challenge is definitely one of my favorites… 🙂
