On Music: Sounds That Capture The Essence…

28/08/2011

Develop an interest in life as you see it; the people, things, literature, music-the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls and interesting people. Forget yourself.” Henry Miller

On Music: Sounds That Capture The Essence... Susana Baca ... De Los Amores

I’ve always loved music, and my favorites cover a pretty wide spectrum from Jazz, to R&B, soul, classical, reggae, pop, gospel and more. When I read the Plinky prompt for this post – Create a soundtrack that captures the essence of your 2011 so far – I decided to not fall back on my old favorites and the songs I reach for readily when I am feeling wistful. I wanted to step out of my usual songs and listen to other music; stuff my kids and their friends listen to, as well as songs I’ve gleaned over the internet or through other friends. For instance, Marcia at InsideJourneys.com introduced me to Susana Baca’s music which is so old world romantic, that it takes you back to a time so ancient and innocent, my heart sings along in recognition.

Watch The Throne Otis –  JAY-Z & Kanye West

Run The World (Girls)Beyoncé

How to LoveLil Wayne

Then, my kids encouraged me to listen to many of the other artists on this list from Nicki to Foster The People to Adele. I added  LiI Wayne and Jay-Z & Kanye because I like to vary my musical interests. Plus, the prompt wanted sounds that capture the essence of 2011.  Since Jay-Z and Kanye will have a huge sold out Watch The Throne tour this fall, they fit the request. Ditto the North American F.A.M.E. tour with Kelly Rowland, Chris Brown, T-Pain and Tyga. Beyonce is a consummate entertainer and when I saw her perform in Los Angeles a couple of years ago, I was impressed. Oddly, I can’t listen when it’s on CD, only when she performs live. The lady is terrific anyway… and is expecting her first child. Congrats Bey!  I’ve added some more sounds below, plus a few new performers on my horizon. I’m always looking to hear new sounds so share your beats.

With the impending hurricane, I might be offline till Monday… I Will follow up on comments when feasible. Posts were already scheduled. Stay safe all! More below…

“Cherish your visions; cherish your ideals; cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts, for out of them will grow delightful conditions, all heavenly environment; of these if you but remain true to them, your world will at last be built.”  James Allen

The Edge Of GloryLady Gaga (not my favorite of her great songs… but here it is.)

I came across Somi quite accidentally, but you will love her music. She has a unique sound and range, and the sort of music that allows you to enjoy it slowly without feeling rushed to jump up and dance. I like Kelly’s message and video on motivation as it’s a subject close to my heart… See if it appeals to you too. It would be a shame if I didn’t add a Lady Gaga song as she is off the curve musically; eccentric and all. Enjoy the tunes and share some of yours, as I’m always eager to hear new artists, and find ways to capture that inner essence through new songs… What are your thoughts? What sounds are capturing the essence of your summer 2011? How do you select music you enjoy? Do share! Thank you. 😉

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Plinky: Create a soundtrack that captures the essence of your 2011 so far.

all videos are censored for German youtube users (except one:Ingele by SOMI) because they say there are copyright problems. Cannot watch them, blocked. Sometimes I think, I am censored in Germany like in China …

    • 30/08/2011 1:45 am

I had the same problem with some videos too and don’t understand why music is being censored in some markets… it is puzzling. Can you watch them on YouTube directly? TY! 🙂

Love music, when I am down or up, music has a way of lifting me up, giving me a higher tone to whatever I am going through. Just for relaxation the sounds that sooth the soul. Thanks for sharing these. Great post !

Music makes my world go round too and i love to listen to something everyday… My range is varied and i play to my mood. I listen to the radio too… TY for stopping in and hope all is well where you are? TY! 🙂

Thanks for introducing Somi. She’s got depth and range, and sounds like she’s been singing for many lifetimes. I love these contemporary singers with ‘old’ voices, like Adele.
Unfortunately, I get distracted by Lady Gaga’s get up; I can’t hear her for the drama surrounding her. It’s as if most of these contemporary artists rely too much on accoutrements and that clouds their creativity.

    • 30/08/2011 1:54 am

I love the singers with that old world magic and depth too… A lot of the newer artists are big on the razz and it gets tired fast… all that auto tuned stuff. However, new ones show up and, thankfully, the selections out there are huge. TY 🙂

I love Susan Baca has well. I heard her this summer on the radio. I enjoy bringing music into my thought process for creating art and writing. This year has been a year of Neo-classical / ambient sounds for me.

    • 30/08/2011 1:57 am

Susana is amazing and I have her on my laptop and listen to her to relax… She has the finest voice and the music is like a massage for the soul… TY for stopping in and yes, I remember your month of tunes for us was a ton of fun. TY! 🙂

  12. 29/08/2011 3:10 pm

Nice variety of tunes here my friend…

Re: Lady Gaga…. If I close my eyes, I love her. 😉 Her voice is absolutely stunningly beautiful! Just not a big fan of her theatrics.

Different artists that have caught my attention this year are The Black Keys, The Script, Parachute… John Legend and I have developed quite a relationship this year as well. 🙂

Oh Megan, I should have mentioned you too in my post because you do regularly share your tunes and concerts so TY girl. I check out your stuff and enjoy them regularly. TY for liking my selections… much appreciated. 🙂

Never heard of Susana Baca or Somi. Loved Somi and need to revisit her on youtube–so thanks for sharing them with us! Hope you survived the storm—we fared well (some people still without electricity though) here at the shore and vacationers have already moved back into the area.

    • 30/08/2011 2:03 am

We were okay after all Terri, TY! I hope you were alright too as you had mentioned the possibility of evacuation… I’m glad all is better but sad that some did lose life and property… Prayers and condolences for all who were lost to the hurricane. ;-(
TY again for enjoying the selections. 🙂

    We shall see. 😀
