Inspiration: Not All Angels Have Wings…

02/08/2011

“An angel can illumine the thought and mind of man by strengthening the power of vision, and by bringing within his reach some truth which the angel himself contemplates.” Thomas Aquinas

Inspiration: Not All Angels Have Wings… the messenger with a smile awaits

Recently, I was reminded of an incident that occurred many years ago and it had me thinking of angelic souls; good people who come forward to help us in our times of great need. Do you believe in angels? Do you believe that angels walk the earth; especially in times of great crisis? I do… but we must be attentive to their presence as their messages are always clear; sometimes even with a sense of urgency.
Many, many years ago, during the war years, my older brother had a remarkable experience that could have only been an act of God through an angelic messenger. He was sitting in a local restaurant with an uncle, they had stopped in for a quick bite on their way back from some meeting. They had ordered their food, rice with stew, and sat drinking glasses of cold water and chatting about the meeting.

“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrews 13:2

Inspiration: Not All Angels Have Wings… they feast and fast with us...

Soon, the food arrived and, as my brother recalled it, the server was a friendly young woman with a soft voice. She placed the dishes on the table and encouraged them to eat up and hurry on their way home. My brother thought it a bit odd as they had only gotten there a short while before. They thanked her and settled down to enjoy their meal and conversation. As they ate their food, she kept coming by to check in on them and ask if they needed anything else… Sure, it was extraordinary service; but there was more… More below 🙂

“Make yourself familiar with the angels, and behold them frequently in spirit; for without being seen, they are present with you.” Francis de Sales

Inspiration: Not All Angels Have Wings… they come as us, like us, for us...

At some point, the young woman came back and told them they needed to get going as it was time for them to get on the road and finish their journey home. There was an urgency in her voice which alarmed my uncle and disturbed my brother greatly. Ever the stubborn man, my uncle wanted to know what was all the rush to get them going … She calmly told them it was time to move on and leave the restaurant. My uncle now baffled, asked if they could, at least, finish their food and pay before leaving. At which point, she told them in a firm voice that there was no time to pay… “Do you hear the buzz outside? It is the jet bombers approaching. Get out now!” It was a time of war and my uncle understood the implications quite well. Without further ado, they dashed out of the restaurant. My brother carried his plate of rice with him, I know…

“When angels visit us, we do not hear the rustle of wings, nor feel the feathery touch of the breast of a dove; but we know their presence by the love they create in our hearts.” Anon

Inspiration: Not All Angels Have Wings… Michael, angel of kindness

As they crossed the threshold of that restaurant, running for the nearby bushes, the jet bomber showered the restaurant and surrounding area with bombs. In a flash, the building was destroyed and a huge fire set ablaze… debris and bodies everywhere. They were unscathed and had been saved by an angel. Needless to say, they couldn’t believe the grace in the form of that young woman whom they, by the way, never saw again. When they arrived back in the village, they were covered in soot and all shook up. They told the story over and over for years to come. They were saved by an angel… Not all angels have wings. What about you? What are your thoughts? Do you believe in angels on earth? Have you ever met an angel? Do share! Thank you. 😉

Thanks for your comment Lorraine… It was quite remarkable and I’m glad to share it. We all have access to that grace. It is available to all.

    Elizabeth,
I believe in angels. This is a wonderful reminder that angels do not always look the way we expect or arrive in the manner that we think. Thank you for sharing.

      Hi Wyletter,
Welcome back! Howdy? Yes, they come in many forms at all times; especially when we need them the most. TY! 🙂

  3. 03/08/2011 12:15 am

Yes I do and what happened to your uncle and your brother is a wonderful example of them “walking among us”.

    • 03/08/2011 1:27 am

      Hi Barb,
It was an amazing story and has stayed with me over the years… Sure, when our time is up, they guide us home… but they are near at other times too. TY! 🙂

  4. 03/08/2011 12:34 am

Yes, I believe in angels being among us to help us, be with us. I speak frequently to my “spirit guide” and ask to be led where I need to be and to help me solve any problem I might be having. My “spirit guide”/angel is by my side….always.

    • 03/08/2011 1:26 am

      Hi Angeline,
I agree with you on that one too… The spirit guides are very close; sometimes we choose not to listen… 😉 TY!

I was thinking about this same thing today. I was leaving work, and a man at the bus stop approached me and asked if I could take him into town. I refused because I didn’t know him, and I was running late to pick my kids up from school, and I had work stuff all over the seats which I had to redistribute when I picked up my kids. I felt sad that I couldn’t risk my safety (and my children’s safety if they were left to wait for me) to carry out this act of kindness. I wondered if it was a test.

If I bore into it too much, my modern logic can bring doubts to be my beliefs. That’s why I make it a point to just accept openly that such things as miracles and angels exist. Personally I have been touched by them, even to the point of it being life changing. When I can manage a relatively quiet mind and am able to be still I can always feel a presence within and about me. I am glad the younger years when I was too proud to accept help are gone. There are benefits from growing older! One of them is gratitude which I write about every day on my blog goodmorninggratitude.com It was profoundly changed my life and I know the urge to begin it came from a power beyond me.

I love angels and believe in them. I have many that surround me and one is called Iris and the other is Lilly. I have had angles protect me in my car, house and in other situations. Thanks for sharing.

Beautifully related. I am glad your brother and uncle escaped safely.

Hi Elizabeth. I do believe in angels on earth. In fact, I’ve met a lot of them! When we do pray, God really sends them to help us. I’ve had a lot of encounters with angels on earth already, this comment section won’t be enough to tell all my stories. 🙂

Take care and God bless. 🙂

Looking back on your life so far, have you encountered any angels Elizabeth? I am not sure that I have, but it certainly is possible. Call it intuition or angels, I believe in a guiding force that propels us forward. Miriam

Yes, I do believe in angels. I’ve written about my car accident (It’s on the ‘My Love Affair with Volkswagen page) and how I knew I was going to roll but had no idea I had been air born and flipped a few times before landing in the grassy median. The entire time there was the most calming voice in my head repeating, “You’re going to be fine, you’re going to be fine.” and I was.
I broke my arm and was quite bruised, but knowing what happened I believe angels gently placed my car on the grass for me. Then when I got out of the car it seemed every person who stopped to help was either a doctor, paramedic or nurse… and that’s before the official rescue crew arrived!

Your story gave me chills. We need to be aware and welcome the angels into our lives every day.
    Thanks Eliz! Great post!

What a chilling story! Gave me goosebumps…

  16. 03/08/2011 2:54 pm

    Barbara, THAT is amazing!

In 1996, I was about 8 months pregnant and had a job that began at 5am, so in October, it was quite dark out at 4:30am. I was running late, and going faster than I should have down the main street from our house toward the freeway (about 50 in a 35). I was super tired and only half paying attention to my surroundings. I looked up and saw bright headlights in the oncoming lane but they weren’t moving. Definitely lights on a semi, which is weird enough in our residential neighborhood. But as I got closer (still going 50) I realized the TRAILER of the semi was parked perpendicular to the road; it was crossing both lanes! I jammed on the brakes of my little Honda and waited for collision. It didn’t occur to me at the time that it would be fatal if it happened.

I stopped about 10-15 feet from the trailer. I swear angels were holding on the bumper of my car.

I do believe angels are with us in times of crisis – and not just the ones that threaten our bodies but our spirits as well. Either my faith has matured considerably over the years, or an ethereal someone is whispering reassurance to me when others would implode.

    Peace, Eliz! 🙂

    Elizabeth the Other 😀

I have goosebumps reading this. I’m not sure I believe in individual angels, per se, but I do believe that there might be moments in which peoples’ actions are divinely inspired or are somehow touched by graces perhaps not needed in other moments. I’ve been privy to a few such moments, and they–like your words, here and elsewhere–are a light to me in darker moments.

  18. 03/08/2011 7:56 pm

What a wonderful story! My guides gave me an article recently saying that if you have a sudden urge to do something unusual, or not to do something usual, pay attention, the Universe may be trying to tell you something. http://orea-highervoice.blogspot.com/2011/07/listen-to-your-inner-urges.html

I think the same is true in circumstances like this, where something very unusual happens around you, like the waitress insisting you need to leave.

If that happened to me, I would be wondering, why, out of all those people in the restaurant, was I saved? And I hope I would try to make my “gift years” mean something special to the world, somehow.

    Blessings,
    Orea

My dad told me once that if you want to know who your Guardian Angel is, you simply say a solemn praying asking for their names and the first name that is whispered in your ear while praying is the name of your Angel. Dad told me the name of my angel was… but I forgot.

Anyway, angels are everywhere. Silently guiding us and watching over us. Even friends are angels. 🙂

Wow, what a wonderful story. As I read, something really hit my heart. I can’t describe what it is, i just know that my body responded to the story. Without a doubt, I believe in angels. I believe they’re around us all the time and give us gifts that unfortunately we sometimes overlook. Gosh, I can’t seem to pull myself back from that restaurant, I’m seeing and feeling that waitress, your uncle and brother. WOW! Sorry, I can’t think about my angel story right now. I’ll have to come back later.

there’s a pop song now in my ears, fifties (sixties?) ANGEL BABY – forgot the singers …

  22. 04/08/2011 12:33 pm

    She was an angel indeed!

…My brother carried his plate of rice with him, I know…
I am sure he must be related to Mr Piglet!

  23. 04/08/2011 1:27 pm

WOW! I definitely believe in Angels.
This story gave me chills because I had a moment in my past where “something” told me to leave my house…not a person I could see but a feeling….and I truly believe if I had stayed in my house, I would not be alive today….I actually posted a link to the story in my post on 7 posts that I tagged you in. It’s one of the bottom 3 links in that post…the one mentioning a fire.

Sharon, you just reminded me of a story from my family. It didn’t involve an angel warning, per se, but read on and see what you think. The house my family lived in when I was born had a large cherry tree in the back yard. One day the tree fell onto the house directly over the crib where the baby was sleeping. My mom said that the tree tipped and fell in slow motion, and when she ran to look, the baby was unharmed, and still asleep.

    I was that baby.

Did the angels hold that tree and gently let it down on me? Or did the tree’s roots just happen to let go that slowly? I guess we’ll never know.

Then there was the time when I was driving. I was in the left turn lane waiting for the arrow to turn on. When it did, I didn’t respond. I wasn’t even aware that I was frozen. A few seconds later, a car sped into the intersection right through the stoplight. It was going fast! I would have been directly in its path, making my turn, if something hadn’t prevented me from moving. Angels? I think so.

I wonder how many of us have been saved and never even realized it.

    Blessings,
    Orea

Beautiful story, Orea and I do believe it was angels watching over you as a baby….and I believe there are angels watching over all of us yet some refuse to notice. Every time we are delayed a few minutes and then pass by a wreck that we could have been in, for example….

The Angels help us to remember and to strengthen these wonderful gifts within us..Our guardian angels have been with us since before our birth and accompany us in every step we take in our lives and they will be with us when we leave this lifetime and return to our soul selves. They amplify the goodness within us they increase the loving energy that we are able to feel they were able to both feel and radiate and share with others.

I read this when you wrote it and I meant to comment then, but somehow I just I forget to stop by. I have been working on cleaning out my e-mail in-box today and came across your post again and I am so glad I did. It is one I plan to save.

Yes, I believe in angels including those without wings!
