Inspiration: Dreaming of Rain…

29/07/2011

“He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass, as showers that water the earth. In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth…” Psalm 72:6-7

Inspiration: Dreaming of Rain... the rains bring renewal and grace

If you encounter rain in your dream, then this suggests that it is time to communicate with others. An impressive downpour demonstrates that you are conscious of spiritual development.

Have you ever had a dream that is not only vivid but also palpable? What do you remember about it? How did it make you feel? Rain is a very powerful symbol in almost every culture. It is known as the water of life. We pray for rain to grow our crops, we honor the rainfall for our harvest, the heavens rain when a great soul is lost, and God‘s promise to Noah is part of that popular biblical rain story…  Recently, I had a powerful dream about rain; a torrential, heavy, unrelenting deluge, and it prompted this post.

The Dream: I was at a book signing with Toni Morrison. It was a wonderful event and lots of people were there in a brightly lit space. My children and many others were there chatting away and doing the usual things that occur at a signing. It was  a happy event and Ms. Morrison was in her element.

“The spiritual person is so shaken with fear of the Lord as to break out in tears, just as CLOUDS draw their water from the upper reaches and pour it forth as rain.” Hildegard of Bingen

Inspiration: Dreaming of Rain... rain is cleansing and healing

Jimmy Cliff – I Can See Clearly Now

A gift or assistance from God.  Nourishment and replenishing (as rain nourished plants). Spiritual presence. Cleansing, washing away the old, and starting new .

The Dream: After a while, I decided to head out as I had errands to run. I joyfully said my goodbyes and headed out the door. It was a bright and sunny day and I remember as I opened the door, a gust of wind and a few droplets of rain fell on me.  As I stepped into the rain, I realized I had stepped into a deluge. It was the heaviest rainfall I had even been under that it took my breath away.

As I struggled with my open umbrella, I could hear myself gasping for breath, and the rain showers fell on me like heavy sheets of glass. Interestingly, the rain felt like a deep cleansing even as I struggled to catch my breath. I was drenched and my umbrella couldn’t compete with the rainfall… and then, as my breath grew weak, I prayed out loud for help and almost  immediately, I felt a release; awash with grace I awoke and bolted out of bed.

“The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.” William Shakespeare (Portia from Merchant of Venice)

Inspiration: Dreaming of Rain... even the deluge brings forgiveness

Dreaming that you get wet from the rain means that you will soon be cleansed from your troubles and problems. Rain also symbolizes fertility and renewal. Seeing and hear rain falling, symbolizes forgiveness and grace.

The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare (Portia speaks)
The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown.
His scepter shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings.
But mercy is above this sceptered sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings;
It is an attribute of God himself;
And earthly power doth then show like God’s
When mercy seasons justice

Even in a deluge, rain is also a symbol of forgiveness. The image of that rainfall has stayed with me, and I remember the feeling of it around me; the heaviness, the struggle, the words of prayer, and the release. The rain was relentless; yet forgiving, once I accepted the power and grace behind it…  What do you think? More below… 🙂

“Rain keeps (the body) from drying out, as the rain moistens the earth. For when the rainfall is moderate and not excessive, the earth brings forth new life. But if it is inordinately heavy, it destroys the earth and drowns new shoots. From the soul there emanates certain forces to vitalize the body, just as rainwater with its moisture vitalizes the earth…” Hildegard of Bingen

Inspiration: Dreaming of Rain... the rainbow is God's promise

Carrying a closed umbrella in the rain is highly unfortunate for the dreamer and his business plans. To dream of carrying an open umbrella in the rain is a very fortunate sign that speaks of good luck in most endeavors.
Clouds, Rain and Lightning, in addition to representing themselves, are also important symbols change, renewal and fertility.

We live in changing times, amidst much contention and difficulty, yet, there is hope in the grace available to us all.  The heavy rains will test our resolve and then bless us, but we must remain open to its warnings as well as its gifts. May all be blessed by the rainfall. May all on earth seek peace. What about you? What are your thoughts? What does rain mean to you? Have you ever had a vivid dream? Do share! Thank you. 😉

Positive Motivation Tip: Trust the rains will bring renewal and a rebirth; they will. Trust the rains will bring spiritual and material abundance; they will. Believe.

I don’t remember ever dreaming of rain. It sounds frightening, yet exhilarating at the same time. What do you think the meaning was in your dream? Miriam

I think when I add snippets from the block quotes and look at them together, it speaks to me… There were other parts to the dream that I left out intentionally; like the exact words I said or some other details, but the essence of the dream is here. It is a time of shifting sensibilities and rebirth for me. I get that, and the rest I am thinking about. What struck you in the telling? TY! 🙂

I can imagine that being a very cleansing experiene. Almost like a new Baptism. Leaves me wondering

    • 31/07/2011 7:07 am

It felt like a baptism of sorts, albeit a tad scary. I’ve tried to imagine the sensation and it is not something I’ve ever felt before. TY! 🙂

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky. ~ Rabindranath Tagore

    • 31/07/2011 7:09 am

There were no clouds in my dream but I get the sentiments Tagore is expressing in the quote you added. TY! 🙂

It’s not the subject of the dream, it’s how you interpret it. This dream could have been a scary for some; that’s what makes dreams so cool.

    • 31/07/2011 7:12 am

It’s all in the interpretation? That’s interesting… It was a tad scary for me yet, I felt inside of myself that the deeper meaning was not a scary one but a profound and deeply healing one. From the moment I stepped into the rain, I had crossed the state of deep sleep to a place in-between where I was acutely aware of what was going on… in a witness state. TY! 🙂

I haven’t had a dream about rain that I can recall, but now I want to. As for you… I think this dream speaks of a book in your near future. hmmmm?

I do know I am ready for some change.
Thanks for a very interesting post!

I don’t dream of rain that much either and this one as so vivid that I had to record it somewhere. I still step back there to re-visit the weight of the rain, indescribable… and yes, I did start this whole journey at a book signing;though it was Toni Morrison’s not mine. From your mouth to God’s ears… yes, we could all use some change for the better, TY! 🙂

What beautiful and powerful dream. The struggle, prayer and release. Very strong images.
I walked home in the rain yesterday. At one point, I found myself hurrying and thought, why? When I’m at work and it’s raining, I think how wonderful it would be to walk in the rain, feel it run down my face, soak my clothes. Now I was walking in the rain, in clothes that I didn’t mind getting wet – so I slowed down and let it run down my face and soak through to my skin.
Your dream reminded me of one I had where I felt myself take my last breath. I felt so at peace. When I woke up, I still felt that peace.

    • 31/07/2011 8:11 am

That is awesome that you allowed yourself to enjoy the rain. I’ve written posts about memories of enjoyment in the rain in childhood but being conscious of getting wet hair and clothes as as an adult. I applaud your actions.
As per my dream, the sounds emanating from my throat were very loud and strong… Honestly, it was truly an amazing dream. TY! 🙂

      • 31/07/2011 10:16 am

I bet it was. Do you record your dreams? It’s interesting to see how they correlate to what’s going on in everyday life.

Rain is a very powerful and purifying force. I can’t recall ever having dreamt about it though. I often dream about running or climbing. What a powerful dream, Eliz.

    • 31/07/2011 8:12 am

Thank you… I don’t dream of rain much either… Actually, running is a theme I used to dream about a lot but not anymore. 🙂

I love rain but don’t think I have ever dreamed of it but hope I do!

    • 31/07/2011 8:13 am

Right… same here as I often dream of indoor events actually. It was different and remarkable. TY! 🙂

I loved your description of your dream. I think you know the answer to the question whether I’ve had any dream so vivid, but as to the question of what rain means to me? It means home. I love Los Angeles, and I’m grateful to live here. But when I wake up to a gray sky, I can’t help but hope for a little rain, so I can pull over my car, step out into it with closed eyes and pretend I’m seven years old again. What I’d give to feel a little of that now . . .

    • 31/07/2011 8:16 am

WoW! That is a great description… Rain means home for you. I like that idea too and though I have read of memories of rainfall, home isn’t usually one of the connectors that is terrific TY!
Love that post you wrote on healthcare. It got a lot of us going… : -)

Very interesting dream! It’s been a long time since I’ve had a vivid dream like that.

    • 31/07/2011 8:17 am

Hi Donna, It might be time for one , no? 🙂

  11. 01/08/2011 8:20 am

No, no vivid dreams for me: I assume I dream, I just do not remember them I think.

Rain to me is very practical – I live in a drought area, so to hear our water storages are at 60% now is WONDERFUL. We are down to stage 2 water restrictions. Our target has been 155 litres of water a day only. 4 minute showers by the clock. No washing the car except with recycled water.

To me, rain symbolises growth and renewal, the hydration of life.

I do love a rainy day to play catch up, or sometimes to just sit and relax, listening to the rhythm of the raindrops replenishing the earth with each little ti-tat. To be honest, I find it so much easier to concentrate on indoor things when it’s raining. Those sunny days call me, wanting me to come play. But rainy days snuggle up with you, or me anyway, and keep me content to do what it is I’m doing inside. It looks like you appreciate the luxuries of moist side of nature as well. Beautiful post. Thanks for the share.

Thank you.Loved your feedback. I enjoy the sound of rain and how it cleanses the earth. It represents all that nourishes and heals us.
