Weekly Photo Challenge: HOT! A very hot fire ceremony at a home in Los Angeles

Weekly Photo Challenge: HOT! Hot and sweet pepper display at a local supermarket

I was quite happy to read the challenge for this week, and imagined all things hot one could photograph and add to this post… But, once I started gathering my shots, I soon found myself stuck in a basket of hot peppers; jalapeno, habanero, scotch bonnet, Jamaican hot, Holland red finger hot, lies pepper and a bunch of other not so hot varieties… When I came up for air, I had to tell myself – “Scratch this!” – and find something more to add to my hot-heat-hot collection. So, the photos you see here are my flawed effort to edit my love for hot peppers/hot food and add some other things. The fire ceremony above was in honor of a friend’s birthday and to bring abundance into the lives of all present. It was a sweltering day in August in Los Angeles and we were all sweating buckets by the time it all ended… well past sundown. As for the next shot, I couldn’t resist capturing the colorful array of peppers at a local supermarket display.

Weekly Photo Challenge: HOT! A pepper shop at Pike Place market in Seattle.. Muy Caliente!

Weekly Photo Challenge: HOT! A hot plate of four varieties of peppers; holland hot, lies pepper, scotch/jamaican hot, and jalapeno

The selection above, includes some of the hottest pepper varieties and I mean … HOT.  The first one is a shot of the impressive selection at Choice Pepper; a spice shop at Pike Place market in Seattle.  The next is a plate of some of the hottest pepper varieties on the market. I love that four clover shaped Lies pepper from the Dominican Republic. It is pretty and hot. The Scotch Bonnet/Jamaican hot pepper adds a unique flavor to any dish.  It has an unmistakable bite and is very popular in Caribbean and African kitchens. After handling the peppers, I had to wash my hands several times… Yep, they were radiating heat babe.

Eating spicy foods is an acquired taste and I find that when some friends tell me, “Yeah, I can handle it,”  I don’t believe them until they’ve tasted one of my hot dishes… Invariably, they start hyperventilating and asking for water. I think if you can’t handle eating a hot pepper with a dash of lemon, stay away from spicy dishes; unless you’re truly adventurous, have a bit of the dragon in you (more on that below) or you like to sweat! What hot things did you find? More on my finds below. 😉

Weekly Photo Challenge: HOT! A picante, hot snack...

This snack fell in my lap as I was on the checkout line at BestBuy. I thought it would a mildly spicy snack, but it has quite the kick and will satisfy your need for some savory heat on a hot day… Interesting isn’t it that people drink tea and eat hot foods in hot countries? Well, these peppery delights and spices have an inner cooling effect, and keep our faculties alert and ready to dash out of the way when something unpleasant, like a Komoda dragon, shows ups… 😆

Weekly Photo Challenge: HOT! Hot pepper sauce ... ready to pour

Weekly Photo Challenge: HOT! Those lovely hotties... Upclose and personal

Coolness might indicate fine qualities, but some just like it real hot Ralphie!  The Hot Sauce shot above was taken at the Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles Shop in Chinatown. They make the best noodles and you should pay them a visit when you’re in NYC. I have some friends who travel with their own portable mini bottles of hot sauce. Whenever they go to a restaurant, they whip it out and season their food at the table.  I have not joined that club yet as I just don’t see the need to eat every dish with smoke coming out of the top of my head… Sheesh, even dragons want a milkshake occasionally… I think. 😳

Anyway, if you have a taste for heat, I suggest you try one of the peppers I listed.  Check them out in that close-up above and then buy one, eat it, and share your experience with us. Do have a glass of cold water nearby… just in case. 😉 What are your thoughts? What HOT things did you find? Did you have an easy or hard time with this exercise? Do share? Thank you! 🙂

I’m glad you liked that line… had me laughing too when I thought about it. 😆

A glass of cold water or maybe some milk to coat your esophagus with some of the intensely hot peppers you picture.

  3. 21/07/2011 1:29 am

Yes, a glass of very cold milk would do too… but it kills the heat and the taste of the food in one fell swoop. 🙂

What a hot good. I like hot dishes but I can’t cool hot ones because my children can’t eat them.
So I eat hot food outside. For example hot noodle, hot fry beef.

Great photos. My son has an affinity for spicy foods. I just picked the first jalipeno pepper from my garden last evening. Can’t wait to see how it tastes!

Again–nice collection of photos. I, too, love spicy foods–the hotter the better. I just had a great carne enchilada last night with great salsa with a wonderful kick made by one of my Mexican student’s parent. My daughter-in-law is from Thailand, so we often eat the heat at her home.

Ahhh…as a lover of hot, spicy foods, I really enjoyed this post! 🙂

I can’t handle hot peppers or hot sauce. I like horseradish, wasabi, but not the pepper sauces. I think too much seasoning often smothers the true taste of a dish. Let the flavors come through as they were meant to and save your stomach, is my motto.
    Thanks for the beautiful imagery!

In Jamaica, we do a pepper shrimp, which is exactly that: shrimp steamed with LOTS of pepper. Women, mostly, sell it. They have them in little plastic baggies in pans that they balance on their heads and walk up and down or sit by the side of the road looking for sales.
I love them even. And even when my mouth is on fire, I’m still popping them into my mouth.
There’s no making curry or escoveitch fish or jerk without it.
Thanks for sharing your love of everything hot,
    Marcia

I must have a bit of dragon in me as I do like my food hot and spicy. I use a lot of that hot sauce you have pictured.
