Summertime: Seven Seasonal Favorites…

17/07/2011

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” John Lubbock

Summertime: Seven Seasonal Favorites... Summer flowers ... orange flower

FLOWERS: With brightly colored flowers everywhere, who could resist the charm of summertime flora?

What is your favorite season? When I think of my favorite time of the year, it would have to be summer. Who can ignore the explosion of colors we enjoy from summer flowers? After the shedding of leaves in fall, the hibernation in winter and the endless beauty of spring showers, summer barrels into our lives all sunny and bright. It wakes us up to enjoy many of its gifts and we embrace it with enthusiasm. We can choose to sit and stare; quietly enjoying the sights and sounds or we can get busy with outdoor treats or simply head for our cottage gardens. In celebration of the season, I put together my list of some things that scream summer to me… You may have other things you’d like to add to my seven, so stop by and share… Here are a few more things I enjoy seeing or doing at this time of the year.

Summertime: Seven Seasonal Favorites... choco cherry vanilla ice cream

GOOD MOOD FOOD: Whether we eat a delicious bowl of Chocolate chip cherry vanilla ice cream  or salads and seasonal fruits all year round, we enjoy eating more of them in the summer. I like the idea of eating an ice cream cone outside; while strolling down the street… Now that is a seasonal delight.

Summertime: Seven Seasonal Favorites... Sunny summer day

WEATHER: Sunny, relaxing weather is what we all love about the summer. The sun shining brightly in the sky lifts our mood and helps us start the day on a cheery note. With all that sunshine comes lots of fun at the beach, time to hang out on our porch, lie down on the grass, plus  enjoy fruits and flowers growing everywhere.

Summertime: Seven Seasonal Favorites... the outdoors; nature walking, hiking, swimming

Summertime: Seven Seasonal Favorites... Nature trail at Ardmore Point, UK

THE OUTDOORS: Lots to do too… You can name a few. The outdoors offer us plenty to do in the summer time and even if we start with just a few outdoor sports, we always add the beaches, walking in nature, hiking, and biking to the mix of fun things we do. What else are you doing?  Congrats to the Winners of the Women’s FIFA World  Cup for Soccer – Japan.

Above are some of my favorites for the summer season… I have added the rest below. What would you add? What do you love about  it?

“Summer is the time when one sheds one’s tensions with one’s clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all’s right with the world.” Ada Louise Huxtable

Summertime: Seven Seasonal Favorites... Summer sundress worn by Gisele Bundchen

FASHIONS: During the summer, we shed our tensions like Louise says and add light weight, light colored, easy care clothes to our wardrobe. Whether we choose swimwear, shorts, t-shirts or light flowing dresses, we know the message of this season is dress light; no more winter coats and heavy boots.

Summertime: Seven Seasonal Favorites... Summer berries

FRUITS: Fresh fruits are abundant during this season, and we get to enjoy a wider selection from berries to peaches to mangoes and more. I love summer fruits because they are plentiful, colorful and delicious.

Summertime: Seven Seasonal Favorites... Summer travel by train to Mount Fuji, Japan

Summertime: Seven Seasonal Favorites... Summer travel items...

TRAVEL: Traveling and visiting places near and far is a huge favorite in the summertime. Because  millions of people travel during the season, airline tickets go up and advance bookings for everything is requisite. If you find that long distance travel is not in the picture for you, planning a short trip to a favorite haunt locally would suffice. There is much we can see and do locally too.

We can add a few more things to our summer to do list. We never tire of the fun that our time in the sun brings… I find that my mood shifts and I feel like getting around more. The warm weather gives us lots of ways to make new friends and see new places.  What about you? What are you waiting for?  What does your summer look like? What would you add? Do share! Thank you. 😉

Positive Motivation Tip: Step into the sunshine and shed your worries and your woes.

I think I do love Fall the best, a settling down of time in preparation for winter. But I do love the free-wheeling times of summer. Fewer clothes, airing out the house and putting away throws and blankets. I love summer fruit and summer getaways. I love going to be by the ocean and sticking my toes in to the wet, warm sand. Ahhhhh….

What I love about Britain is the changing seasons. I can’t choose just one!

I love Autumn.when all the trees put on their Golden, Brown, Red, Rust sliver gowns to get ready for the autumn dance. Then when the wind blows they sway and glisten in the sun and gradually over a few weeks the branches are bare and all is ready for the winter.
I love Winter too, deep snow which twinkles in the sunlight. Snow laying on the branches which makes it look like a Fairy Grotto.Snow that makes odd shapes on the hillside.
Spring I like because it is rebirth. Everything that was sleeping and dormant comes to life again and green buds shoot from hedges and branches.
Summer is hot. but I cannot see myself lying on the grass gazing up into a blue blue sky. I would probably be laying on an ants nest…just my luck!

loved you post and I agree with Tilly but the same applies to Bulgaria..here we have all the seasons in separate packages..not all rolled into one!

Choco cherry vanilla ice cream – I shouldn’t, but nevertheless: I eat once a week …

Mine would also be Summer. I love the beach, anything with water including pools and thus summer is 2 thumbs up for me. Spring second except for my bad allergies. those pics are just vividly beautiful. thanks for the visit and the heartwarming comments. Hope the retreat brought you so much good energy. stay blessed.

Got to be summer for me. Coming from a country that has only one season, I’ve adapted to the changes but summer’s very close to my heart. Green grass and walking barefoot, flowers – lots of beautiful flowers, the beach and beach parties, being able to cook and eat outdoors, fruits, street fairs – I could go on, but you get the picture.
Hey Elizabeth, I’ve changed my theme and seemed to have lost you. Stop by and see what I’ve been up to. http://insidejourneys.com

For me summer means one thing – BEACH! I love the beach. Sun, surf, sand, sea.

My favourite season though is autumn (fall to you) – not as hot, but warm.

Great description. It is too hot to go out for a long time but there are various things during the summer season such as food, nature things and others.

For me one of the things I love most about summer (and this should come as noooooooo surprise to you 😉 ) is outdoor concerts!!! Nothing is better than sitting outside in the company of those you love, enjoying the sweet sounds of live music… add into that enjoy good eats, laughter, cool beverages and beautiful summer nights and I am good to go! Also I love sitting around a fire on a nice summer evening doing the same things I mentioned above!

Having a beach house it stands to reason that summer is my favorite time of year. When I’m at the beach I am more creative than any other time of year. Mind you, I don’t like sitting on the beach and soaking up the rays… not a big fan of getting all sweaty and gritty, but walking on the beach I do love. Fresh air wafting through the house is like energy filling me up.
I also love lightweight summer dresses, billowing skirts and t-shirts are my go to wardrobe in the summer.

Lovely post Eliz, and as usual the photos are wonderful.

Summer has always been my least favorite season, but I’m finding reasons to appreciate it this year, some of which you have listed in this beautiful post.

Summertime fruits and veggies are tops on my list. Other things I like about summer are going to the beach or mountains (which we’re not doing this year), sitting on the deck watching the sunset as the cats roll around on the flagstones, summer reading… this list could go on and on. 🙂

I love early spring. Seeing all the plants waking up after a nice nap

  13. 18/07/2011 12:49 pm

Summer is my favorite too . . . you probably guessed that by where I live (Florida, not Alaska). 😀

LOVE this post and the first quote:

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time” John Lubbock

    Don’t just do something . . . Sit there!

I will admit I am not loving summer this year as much as usual. It has much to do with almost every day being 100+ and a good 10 degrees hotter than normal. The temps make being outside something of a struggle in the afternoon parts of the day. My favorite season is Spring when life jumps up and says “I’m back” after a cold winter. I am partial to that annual renewal of life….

  15. 18/07/2011 4:43 pm

I love summer! You get to wear skirts and all that 🙂 clothes are so much more beautiful in summer!

  16. 18/07/2011 10:49 pm

I adore your choice for an opening quote! As one who is more of a thinker than a doer”, I appreciate those who appreciate the contemplative side of summer! What with all the beauty around us, it would be criminal to ignore it.

  17. 19/07/2011 7:34 am

great summertime list (love the sundress). I am trying to find peace with winter–I think I’m almost there.

  18. 19/07/2011 1:13 pm

Summer for me, too! That’s why I loved living in Florida and miss it very much!

  19. 19/07/2011 5:03 pm

I certainly appreciate the pensiveness of lazy beach days that only summer can offer but, I have to say my favorite season is absolutely Autumn. I like to think I can smell the season approaching before anyone else! I love everything about it… the changing leaves, smoky dusk and the crispness in weather. =) Cheers to the changing seasons!

Fall is my favorite season because it starts to get a little cooler and my birthday is also in the Fall! 🙂
