Reflections: Be At Peace With Yourself…

05/07/2011

“Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Reflections: Be At Peace With Yourself… Peace, Prosperity, Passion… begins with peace within

There is a lot in life that can make us feel uncertain. One thing I know for sure is that even when we make plans on how we wish to live our lives, other events over which we have no control, can/do happen to unravel our well placed plans. To live is to experience a measure of uncertainty. How do we overcome uncertainty? If we could own one quality/virtue we don’t currently have, what would it be? What could we do to make time for moments that feed our passions more often?

In case you’re wondering, I am combining three prompts (two from #Trust30 & one from WP DailyPost) that bring me back to one important quality that is imperative to anything else we do, want or imagine — To Be at Peace with Yourself. Peace within is imperative to accomplishing our goals and dreams.

#Trust30 is an online initiative and 30-day writing challenge. The #Trust30 Prompt: Write down a major life goal you have yet to achieve or even begin to take action on. For each goal, write down three uncertainties (read: fears) you have relating to each goal. Break it down further, and write down three reasons for each uncertainty. When you have three reasons for your fear, you’ll be able to start processing the change because you know where the fear stems from. Now you’ll be able to make a smaller changes that push you towards your larger goal. So begins the process of “trusting yourself.”

Every goal, dream, desire, fear, joy, or passion we have begins with an inner prompting that then guides our hearts and minds to purposefully plan a course of action or not. Responding to the inner prompt requires trust … and peace. Trusting our own inner guidance and acting on it comes from being at peace with our decision.

Unless we are at peace or operate from a place of peace, we get pulled in many directions by the multitude of voices; ours and others, that tell us to do this and that… Then, before we know it, our plans are derailed and off we go in another direction. If there is a quality we should own, I would reach for peace and then all the other virtues. When we think about the focus we place on things that matter to us, there is a knowing, an inner peace that resonates… What is that sensation like for you? What trips up your peace?

“The world belongs to the energetic.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Reflections: Be At Peace With Yourself… Lightning – peace is there as you find your form of energy…

#Trust30 is an online initiative and 30-day writing challenge. The #Trust30 Prompt:Think of an instance when you’ve been so involved in an activity that you’ve lost track of time, and then identity the passions and energies you were feeding. Who was there with you? What were you doing? What will you do to make time for moments like that one more often?

Whenever I am doing the things I enjoy passionately; yoga, dance, reading, creative and spiritual practices, I enter a place of remarkable energy flow and calm; what some call the zone. This place is peaceful, energetic and centered. A ton of activity might be going on around us when we enter the zone yet we are alert and not ruffled or distracted as at other times. A lot gets accomplished from that center of peace for all of us. Yet, we don’t visit it as often as we’d like to. What stops us?

Aside from our daily demands in the world, we have to deal with others expectations of us and our own actions. As much as we’d love to stay centered by our passions and tap into the infinite energy source that is there for us, we do get distracted by other desires. Unless we have the understanding and peace within to stay focused on the present and on our tasks, other things will throw us off… To myself and others, I’d say: Be at Peace with yourself…. and let the rest follow. What are your thoughts? What quality/virtue would you like to own? Do you imagine your goals from a place of peace within? How do you know when you are on the right track? Do share! Thank you. 😉

This post was inspired by three prompts from RalphWaldoEmerson.me: Write down a major life goal you have yet to achieve or even begin to take action on. For each goal, write down three uncertainties (read: fears) you have relating to each goal… write down three reasons for each uncertainty. So begins the process of “trusting yourself.”| WP Daily Post: If you could own one thing you don’t currently have, what would it be? | and RalphWaldoEmerson.me: Think of an instance when you’ve been so involved in an activity that you’ve lost track of time, and then identity the passions and energies you were feeding. Positive Motivation Tip: Seek Inner Peace… What you believe, dream, imagine you become… when you focus and listen to your inner promptings.

“The truth speaks from a quiet place.” I heard this quote (or something similar) on a TV show once and was stunned by it. I’d struggled and struggled to come to a decision on something up until the moment I heard those words. Afterward, I removed the struggle by trying to find that quiet place–extracting everything I wanted to feel or felt I should feel. And the truth? It did speak to me.

Since then, I’ve tried to see dissonance or frustration as a sign I’m moving away from where I’m meant to be . . . or arguing so much with myself because I know an answer but don’t want to accept it. Those moments of acceptance are epiphanies of peace for me.

I know I’m on the right track when my sense of dissatisfaction starts fading. 🙂

the zone for me: writing, talking with friends, guitar music:

“Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles.” I had to read it this several times because the more I do, the clearer it gets. There are so many distractions in life, that it is hard to find such peace but I have to make an effort to block each one of them, to make ammends, to seek forgiveness, to live in love and generosity, to be surrounded by silence so I can listen to the whispers of my heart. It may take more time, but I’m hopeful it will happen. Thank you.

Desiderata, a prose poem by Max Ehrmann (1872-1945), a lawyer by trade, a poet by choice, hung on the wall of: my bedroom in high school, my dorm room in college, and my office in law school (and throughout the years I practiced law).

Filled with Ehrmann’s observations about life (and the human condition), his words served as a constant reminder to me:

    * to be at peace with the unfolding of life
    * to be gentle with myself and others
    * to pause and notice the beauty of this world
    * to go placidly amid the noise and haste
    * to remember what peace there may be in silence

    Peace lies within.

I am enjoying my inner and outer peace at the moment. I will try to keep that inner peace when the outer peace erupts in a few days.

I am learning to be at peace even if the unknown is right in front of me.

Ah, inner peace! My peace gets tripped up with other people’s plans! I am so easily persuaded to spend my little bit of free time doing what other people want me to do. Haha I could use a day at the spa!!

I have found inner-peace in finding the comfort of being myself and letting everything sort of fall into place as it should. There are many things that happen in our lifetime to disturb this reflection, but I have also found if we are grounded in truth and wisdom, these too shall pass !!

What you write often makes me push back my chair from the computer and think for a little while before I move on to the next paragraph. Today I am reminded of what I know to be true, but lose track of sometimes. Life is change… constant and never ending for each life. The changes may be very small and evolutionary…or may burst upon me demanding I take a different path. But change is the constant we can all count on…. things goes best when I just give in and enjoy “life’s ride” with my hands off the handle bars…

I’m really trying to be at peace right now. But there’s that little voice which keeps me questioning whether I’m really at peace or just coasting.
I feel as if I used to be better with uncertainty, not sure I’m as good any more and I’m not sure why or when that happened. Age, maybe?

It’s sometimes difficult to block out all the distractions when they come at me from all angles. Most of the time I am at peace especially in the garden, on the boat, or forest bathing. Being outdoors gives me much peace.

Want to hear more about your yoga experience–it sounds wonderful!

Elizabeth, where do you find the time to invent and then write these posts? You amaze and inspire me to do and be more. Thanks! Miriam

For the moment, I have achieved mt goals. Our next goal is to buy a bigger house. To achieve that we need John to be employed, so I guess when I stop and thing about it, achieving the big goal we did, just leads to more goals! 🙂 We are trying to be peaceful within now, after so much having gone before.
