SADE LIVE: In Concert In NY... A Pictorial Review… Sade and entire band at show's end

Last October, I was chatting with a friend on Facebook when a post flew by announcing that Sade Adu would be touring again and performing her famous hit songs after a ten year hiatus. I was thrilled. When Diamond Life came out in 1984, I bought the album and, anyone who has ever loved an album can relate to this, played the songs a zillion times and memorized all the lyrics. I devoured everything I could find on my homegirl and her band, aptly named SADE, and bought subsequent albums; Promise in 1985, Stronger Than Pride in 1988, Love Deluxe in 1992, Lovers Rock in 2000, and her most recent, Soldier of Love in 2010. I was not going to miss this show. I didn’t and all the photos on this post were taken by yours truly, last Tuesday, at the Nassau Coliseum.

SADE LIVE: In Concert In NY... A Pictorial Review

One of my closest friends, Diahann, and I got advance tickets for the Sade Live In Concert at The Nassau Coliseum, Long Island, NY. Our date with Sade was Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 07:30PM; we had waited eight months to see her and she didn’t disappoint. Her soulful music; a blend of jazz, funk and soul  had us dancing all night.

SADE LIVE: In Concert In NY... A Pictorial Review... John Legend with his singing trio

John Legend, the fabulous nine Grammy Awards winner, super talented musician and actor, was her opening act, and he delivered beautifully with his backup singing trio. Dressed in a handsome all white suit, John performed a set of his most popular songs for an hour – 7:30-8:30pm. He sang, danced, played his Yamaha piano, even stood on it at one point, and had us on our feet shouting for an encore at the end. That man can sing…

Set List – Songs Sade Performed:(1-7 of 21)
Soldier Of Love
Your Love Is King
Skin
Kiss Of Life
Love Is Found
In Another Time
Smooth Operator
From 8:30 – 8:50PM, there was a short intermission and then the lights dimmed, the band appeared on stage to the song Soldier of Love … and then Sade, dressed all in black, appeared; rising from beneath the stage like a phoenix rising from an orchestral pit … the crowd went wild. Yes, the Coliseum was packed with Sade fans and friends of all ages and we had a musical extravaganza. Come back later for more pictures here and below (updated). 😉

Set List – Songs Sade Performed:(8-14 of 21)
Jezebel
Bring Me Home
Is It A Crime
Love Is Stronger Than Pride
All About Our Love
Paradise
Morning Bird
Dressed in black and looking fabulous, Sade started the show on a high note performing many of her most popular songs. She changed outfits four times and sang, altogether, about 21 songs. Her mellifluous voice was strong; She sounded so much better than she did performing live ten years ago. She looked great, and danced, entertained, and serenaded us till after 11:00PM. The set was equally entertaining as it was superimposed with images of places, captivating scenes from Sade’s life, video playbacks and nature shots as backdrops to her stage show. In three parts, I have added a set list of the songs she performed, more write-ups and pictures for you to enjoy. Sit back and enjoy the show via pictures.

Cherish The Day
What impressed me at this show was not just the superlative performance, nor the camaraderie I experienced with other concertgoers, it happens at all concerts, but the truly international flavor and age range of the crowd. We danced in the aisles, took tons of pictures; some even video, and had a jolly good time. The staff and security detail at the Coliseum were efficient and professional. They treated us with respect and, at the end, we all left with our spirits high. We had an awesome time.

Another thing I liked about the location is that the Marriott Hotel is across the parking lot and you can go eat, have drinks and chat with friends before and after the concert. I give this show an A+. Next? Ms. Janet Jackson in August. What are your thoughts? When was the last time you attended a concert? What was your experience and did you enjoy it? Who would you like to see perform? Do share? Thank you! 🙂

I just LOVE her. so glad, and slightly jealous ;), that you got to see her concert. Thanks for letting me “see” it through your post!

    • 27/06/2011 2:34 am

Hope you return to see the rest of the photos… Thank you! 🙂 Now, I have to catch up on blog comments to my buddies.
It’s been a hectic week with family visiting from out of the country too.

  2. 27/06/2011 3:11 am

your SADE photos – great! thanks so much for sharing!

    • 27/06/2011 9:24 am

Thank you Frizztext! I was a bit miffed because I took my mediocre Nikon coolpix camera with me. I figured if they took it away, I wont be upset… It takes unpredictably bad and good pictures and even when it looks good on the viewfinder, the end result is not always good… I took a lot of pictures that a better camera would have made fabulous… Sheesh, my Canon takes better shots but I didn’t want to lose it. We had a great show. 🙂 TY!

OMG, my friend and I were talking about her at dinner last night! She saw her the last time she was here — I didn’t and kicked myself. Needless to say, i am JEALOUS! Sade’s my girl!!!!!!!!!! And John Legend, what a treat!!!
Glad you were able to see her. She’s the consummate performer.

    • 27/06/2011 9:27 am

She is even better as a performer now. Ten years ago she didn’t dance much and seemed quite self-conscious. She really rocked the house this time. 🙂

      • 27/06/2011 6:55 pm

You must have had front row seats. Those are some lovely photos – WOW!

    • 27/06/2011 9:37 am

Interesting duet… I prefer Sade singing her songs by herself… No offense Alicia but… 😉 TY! Frizztext.

  6. 27/06/2011 4:17 am

She is so beauitiful and I always thought of her as classy but what’s with the red bra? Tacky.

    • 27/06/2011 9:39 am

It’s a youthful fashion statement… You know – that underwear as outerwear fashion look. It’s deliberate and adds a surprise factor to an otherwise classic evening gown… For a performer, on stage, it works… TY! 🙂

  7. 27/06/2011 5:09 am

I’ve always been a big fan of hers and her amazing voice. Full of envy that you might actually get to see her but good luck with getting tickets

    • 27/06/2011 8:40 am

      Hi Peter,
I already saw her in concert last week! The concert was last Tuesday and all the pictures here were taken with my camera… Are you referring to Sade or Janet now? There are tickets for both available. 🙂

  8. 27/06/2011 7:27 am

Sade Live is great ! I love the photos ! Thanks so much for sharing ! Great Post ! 🙂

    • 27/06/2011 9:42 am

Thank you Penny! We had a lot of fun and I would go again if someone would give me free tickets. A back stage pass won’t hurt either. 🙂

  9. 27/06/2011 8:16 am

What a great experience to see Sade Live. I wonder how you found time, lol… I guess those of us who don’t sleep much have tons of time to do all sorts of fun things. Glad you enjoyed it.

    • 27/06/2011 9:44 am

You know the drill, we make time to do stuff… It was an evening show show and we had time to get there and enjoy the evening… It was in NY so I didn’t have to travel far. TY! 😉

  10. 27/06/2011 8:35 am

You’ve made me realize how long it’s been since I’ve been to a concert–years & years! Favorite memories of younger concert days: 3 Springsteen concerts. (Quite saddened with the recent death of Clarence).

    • 27/06/2011 9:46 am

Yeah, RIP Clarence… I wish I could go to more concerts but they require a lot of preparation and stuff. It does keep one upbeat and active… We danced in the aisle all night. TY! 🙂

  11. 27/06/2011 8:47 am

I love Sade! You must have had excellent seats to get such good photos. She is more beautiful now than ever. I agree with Frizztext … she looks a bit like you.
The price of tix for concerts these days keeps me away. Two concerts I missed that I’m still kicking myself over are The Rolling Stones, Steel Wheels Tour, which I could have seen for FREE because I worked at a radio station but we had other plans. Should have changed them. And I regret not paying the big bucks to see the Eagles reunion tour, Hell Freezes Over.
Other than that I’ve seen most everyone I’ve wanted to see.

Can’t wait for your review of Ms. Jackson!
    Thanks for sharing!!

    • 27/06/2011 9:52 am

      Hi Barb,
Doesn’t that stink when you miss a concert that was at your finger tips? I feel the same way about Prince in January… I messed up on that one as I could have seen him too. Yeah, ticket prices are whack and then you have to organize the plans for the evening and all. I found it easier to see shows in LA than in NY (though it should not make sense at all). TY! Will update y’all 🙂

  12. 27/06/2011 6:20 am

I think SADE looks a little bit similar to YOU, Eliz!
    compare your icons on twitter!

    • 27/06/2011 9:41 am

Em. No! I don’t think we look alike at all… Now she is gorgeous… Thanks for the compliment though! 🙂

  13. 27/06/2011 9:40 am

I’ve enjoyed Sade’s music for a long time – what fun it must have been to see her in concert!

    • 27/06/2011 9:53 am

Yes, it was a ton of fun and she and the band kept the energy level quite high… 🙂 TY!

  14. 27/06/2011 9:44 am

I LOVE Sade! She is gorgeous and has such an amazing voice! So glad you went and posted these awesome photos! You must’ve had great seats – you look so close! My favorite song is Your Love is King. Now, I have to go listen on my iPod. I think her clothes are fabulous! Oh, what I would give to fit in that white dress!! She is beautiful.

I have not been to a concert in years. Last one? The band “Yes” many moons ago… Thanks for bringing it to life! 🙂

    • 27/06/2011 9:58 am

I love Sade and the music too. We had pretty decent seats… and if my camera had behaved, my shots would have been much better. She is very stylish and everything she wore looked fabulous. I don’t go as often as I’d like either but I have a great time when I do… Maybe we should go find them (Yes) and attend one of their concerts, no? 🙂 TY!

  15. 27/06/2011 10:15 am

Hardly any guys commenting on this post, but I LOVE Sade’s music. Looks like a great concert. How about Sade and Maxwell?

    • 27/06/2011 10:49 am

Now that I would pay to see! How about Sade and Eminem… You know, crazy creative meets cool creative? I’ll pay to see that. LOL! 🙂 Yeah, where are you guys? There were just as many guys at the show. What gives? 😉

  16. 27/06/2011 10:20 am

Sade is truly a class act! :)The concert in Toronto was amazing! A simple stage design and a few outfit changes, but it was all about the music! Every time she did a song from her old album, the crowd went wild—the cheers were continuous! 😀

  24. 27/06/2011 11:35 am

Your pictures are amazing! Were you sitting ON the stage?!?!

    • 27/06/2011 11:57 am

    Best. Review. Ever.

Thanks so much – what a great artist she is! Love that you put together both pics and your impressions. A powerful post that makes me feel I was there. Excellent writing. Glad you got Pressed!

I love Sade. She is an incredible singer and performer. Thank you for sharing your experience. I would love to see her in concert.
I have photos of Luther Vandross and Howard Hewitt performing at a concert I attended back in the 80’s. Luther was heavy set then but I loved him just the same. His voice was undeniably The Best. I was so close to the stage with Howard that on my photo you can count the strands of hair on his chest. He wore white pants and a deep open white shirt. It was an awesome experience. 🙂
    Congrats on being Freshly Pressed.

  27. 27/06/2011 12:05 pm

    looked like a good concert!

  28. 27/06/2011 12:12 pm

Loved Sade back in the day… and Soldier of Love is just as good as her older hits. What I find amazing, looking at your fabulous pics, she does not seem to have aged one bit! Stunning!

    • 27/06/2011 8:15 pm

Now, I was thinking the same thing at the show… She looked fresh and nary a wrinkle in sight… almost the way I remember her from ten years back. Pretty amazing! TY. 🙂

    • 27/06/2011 8:52 pm

TY! 🙂 I didn’t have a telephoto lens… I had a pretty average camera – Nikon Coolpix – that was erratic. We had pretty good seats and I’m grateful for the shots I was able to capture… I’m an amateur photographer with a lot to learn so I’m somewhat glad with the outcome.

    • 27/06/2011 8:59 pm

TY Frizztext… You are funny! I was looking at those black cartoon cats again. 🙂

  51. 27/06/2011 9:36 pm

I am so happy that you got to see Sade and John Legend! I wanted to see them so badly as they were here in Pittsburgh, but couldn’t make it!

Congratulations my dear friend on being freshly pressed! Couldn’t think of a more deserving person… Your words have encouraged and inspired me many times, bringing smiles and comfort when needed most! Yay for you! 🙂

    • 27/06/2011 9:51 pm

Thank you Megan! I thought of you when I heard she was in Pittsburgh too… Thanks too for your kind words, I was so surprised to read it and delighted too. WooHoo to Freshly Pressed and may everyone have a chance to enjoy a blog moment like this. 🙂

    • 28/06/2011 1:50 am

Thank you Maggie… you are so sweet. You have impressed me as much too… We all do our bit to help each other. I am as grateful for my buddies like you as I am for the FP honor… It’s all good!

  52. 27/06/2011 9:39 pm

    so jealous!

    • 27/06/2011 9:43 pm

Don’t be… You’ll have your show someday too! TY! 🙂

  53. 27/06/2011 10:06 pm

She opened the tour here in Baltimore and it was magical. I consider myself an aging punk rocker but back in the day you could find Sade cassettes mixed in with my Black Flag and Dead Kennedy’s tapes.

    • 27/06/2011 10:33 pm

I hear you… this from one aging punk rocker to another. I was a huge Sex Pistols fan in London and wore the clothes, pins and dyed hair… Those were the days. TY! 🙂

  54. 28/06/2011 12:12 am

Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed! It is well deserved!
I love Sade, but I’ve only really been to one concert in my life…and it was OK…but not that great…it was Kid Rock at 19 and one of my friends won 2 tickets, couldn’t go, so she gave them to a mutual friend and me and her went.
I remember doing cool downs in Dance class to Sade and singing along. 🙂

    • 28/06/2011 1:47 am

Thanks for your comment Sharon! You’re next… 🙂 Yeah, I used some of her music in dance class too and even on my answering machine, LOL!

  55. 28/06/2011 12:15 am

I wish I could have gone. I love Sade. Thank you for sharing your experience.

    • 28/06/2011 12:56 am

It was a lot of fun… Thank you too for your comment! 🙂

  59. 28/06/2011 2:17 am

I would so love to see her in concert one day. Soldier of Love Brought my attention. Happy to hear the concert was great. Makes me want to go 🙂

I’m going to a Prince concert in just a month. Saw him twice last year, and cannot wait to see him again. Funky-time!

I bet Janet Jackson will be wonderful as well. I missed her concert in my country two weeks ago because I was getting married the day after. Chances to see Janet again is not that high, so after your concert I’ll come back here and read your review 🙂

    • 28/06/2011 2:34 am

Good for you to see Prince in a month… I messed up on that one… Sure, I’ll write a post after the Janet Jackson concert and pray they are as generous with us as Sade’ was. Sending you blessings and love on your marriage. TY for stopping by 🙂

  60. 28/06/2011 5:09 am

She is beautiful. A beautiful singer and woman. Sadly, I’m younger and I first listened her 2-3 years ago.

    Great pictures, thanks! 🙂

    • 29/06/2011 3:03 am

Thank you for your feedback! You have picked a great time to love Sade’s music. The ten year hiatus is over and you get to hear her again. 🙂

    wow, great singer 😀

  63. 28/06/2011 7:30 am

Congratulations….I kind of jump off my seat when I saw you on freshly pressed. I knew in my heart that you will be posted and celebrated by the rest of the world for the daily inspiration you give into their lives. I was looking at the list of bloggers who congratulated you and a lot of them you have motivated by the daily posts you make each day. This is such a great event. It made my day. The tribute to Sade was beautiful, she was one of my favorite when I was younger, the years has been good to her. she’s even lovelier as gets older. Your friends in the Blog world are just all joyful, honored and proud to have known you and be a part of their daily walks in life. God Bless.

    • 29/06/2011 3:08 am

TY so much! 😉 I love your enthusiasm and you made my day with your comment here and the next posts. I love Sade’s music and kept playing her stuff even during the quiet years… I hope she reads my post and leaves us a comment… Now that will totally rock. 🙂 I feel blessed to be connected to many, many positive folk here. TY everyone and you are all equally deserving! 🙂

All I feel is envy. Wonderful shots of the concert. Didn’t know they let people in with cameras to those types of events anymore. Unless you happen to take them with you camera phone, then all I have to say is that’s one nice phone! Thanks for sharing them and congrats on being fresh pressed!

    • 29/06/2011 3:15 am

Aww… Don’t despair, your day in the sun is near! We were lucky as they did allow us to take pictures and some even had video cameras… I was thrilled to be able to take my pictures without sneaking around. It was a fantastic show and I hope other artists will take note that fans are there to have fun; letting them take pictures, dance in the aisles, and be treated with respect by security should be a given… 🙂 Thank you for your kind words! 😉

  66. 28/06/2011 10:18 am

They both brought the house down and I say the promoters did an awesome job of putting them together… John is a cool guy and both he and Sade can sing; they brought it home… Great combo. TY for your feedback! 🙂

  68. 28/06/2011 9:59 am

I really love her music. Her voice is beautiful, and she sings with such passion which comes from her heart. 🙂
I even have links to her music on my travel blog

Cool! I will check out your music/travel blog. TY for stopping by and leaving a comment. This has been a huge energy rush! 🙂

  69. 29/06/2011 1:16 pm

I got here from your ‘Thank you’ post. John Legend and Sade on the same bill – Well worth the money I would have thought. Concerts aren’t particularly good conditions for photography, but you have some great ones here. You make me wish I was there.

  70. 29/06/2011 2:25 pm

You are right. There were some lighting challenges and I had to make sure to turn my flash off. Some shots were impossible because of bright light saturation, while others were a gift. I’m grateful for the way the pictures I took turned out. Thank you for your feedback! 🙂

  71. 29/06/2011 5:48 pm

I love Sade, here music is so soulful and her voice wonderful to listen to. Would love to see her in concert.

Glad to hear it was a great show. Love the photos. I saw Sade twice in past years and loved it both times. I was at the Rihanna concert last night and she put on a great show too.

Thanks for sharing this! Loved loved loved the show and I’m still on a Sade high.
I also bought all of her albums and purchased advanced tickets and had to wait the long months for the concert to get here. The only difference….We (my Sade partner and I) purchased tickets for the IZOD center in Rutherford, NJ for June 24th. At the last minute my Sade partner decided that we should see her twice and he bought tickets for the Nassau Coliseum, so I was able to see her twice! TWICE! I’m still spinning! I don’t think I have ever been so excited. For folks who haven’t seen her and hold future concert tickets, you are in for a fabulous treat! Thanks again for sharing the photos. They are awesome. By the way, the last concert I went to was 10 years ago to see Sade! And lastly, I was able to get a couple of good shots myself (and video too) with my old Canon PowerShot S2 IS camera.

    • 27/07/2011 5:00 am

Good for you to have attended twice…. It must have been a ton of fun for you, right? You should share some of your photos so we can all celebrate with you. TY! 🙂

Saw her last friday in oakland. Actually brought tears to my eyes to witness such an amazing moment. I’ve waited 26 years to see Safe and it was worth it! Thank you for your pictures and post you captured the beauty of the evening. I only wish she would have sung Nothing can come between us. I love the lines in that one. But still breathtaking nevertheless…btw I see you missed Prince I caught him twice this tour…again another amazing show! I’ve been in tour Heaven last couple of months!!

    • 05/09/2011 7:39 pm

Good for you to catch Sade and then Prince. Fantastic! I loved the show I attended and would see her again if possible. Ditto when Prince comes to a town near me, I’ll be there… 🙂
