Inspiration: Making Choices…

25/06/2011

“You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.” –Morpheus (The Matrix)

Inspiration: Making Choices... Now Choose - Red or Blue pill?

From the time we wake up in the morning, till the time we fall asleep at night, we make choices. Our choice could be as simple as staying in bed an extra hour, jumping out of bed to exercise or staying out late at an all night party. Whether we want to or not, we get to choose how we live our life. Making choices that help us see the depth of the rabbit-hole can be liberating or enervating; it depends on the individual. But we have to choose… as a matter of fact, we are always making decisions; be it consciously or unconsciously, and we sometimes act without thinking because we have a memory, or expectation of a familiar outcome. When we decide to not act on situations, we are still making a choice; the choice to stall until we are forced to choose.

Inspiration: Making Choices... blue mushrooms or red apples... choose wisely

For instance, this post was to be about flowers in my garden and then I saw the WP Daily Post prompt and changed my mind. It is less about whether I’ll take the red or blue pill and more about why and how we make choices. Why did I make that change? I liked the idea of imagining the outcome of choosing to swallow, perhaps on a whim, the red pill and finding myself in another world vis a vis The Matrix.  I was also thinking about a book; A Piece of Cake: A Memoir by Cupcake Brown which details the remarkable journey of a young woman from a life of gang membership, prostitution and drug addiction to her life as a well respected lawyer… she chose to turn her life around. That is the power of making choices that uplift us. What do you think? How do you choose? More below… 🙂

“It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” J. K. Rowling

Inspiration: Making Choices... We can choose the red apple or pill.; it's our call

Some days we wake up and want to relax, read the paper, chat with friends and take it easy.  Others days, we choose to tackle tasks/chores that need our attention. If we decide to toss our plans out the window for a momentary thrill or a ride on the merry-go round, then so be it. Whatever happens, stand by your choice and own it…  I’m standing by this one even though I can’t find a picture of a red pill to add to this post. (update… I did!) 😉  Now, we can go for the pill or jump on the apple, it’s up to us. No matter which way you decide to go, I hope you like the rabbit hole. What are your thoughts? Do you expect different outcomes from your choices? What do you do when presented with two equally tempting choices? Do share! Thank you. 😉

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: If given the choice, are you the kind of person who takes the red pill, or the blue pill? Why? When do you willfully do the opposite?

Blue pill or red pill? Reminds me of all the medicines I take! But going back to what this pills meant, just like what you said the choices we make in our life determines who we are or what we will become. I remember when I was a kid, I love to draw and I would often get a ” Best in Art Award” in class. There was a time when it became to predictable that I wished I had a different talent like singing or some academic achievement but eventually I embraced what God gave me and took the ” Artist” pill and the rest is history. Thank you for inspiring us daily. I’m amazed by how you bring all these words and do it everyday. Thank you again for the awards. I placed them on my blog and noted that it came from you. Gifts like the one you have needs to shared so more people will be inspired and motivated. Take care.

Yes, it is important to realize we make choices. The fact is, however, there are times we don’t have a choice. It can always be said, we can choose how we respond when life doesn’t let us choose something, but that is not always true. Choice is limited.

Thinking otherwise has been a way of blaming some people for staying mired in poverty or not “snapping out'” of a major mental illness. Oprah says “If I made it anyone can.” That diminishes her accomplishments, but makes all who don’t “make it” personally to blame. Not the way to develop a compassionate world for those with limited or no choice.

Hi Katherine, I felt a connection with your comments about our ability to NOT have a choice at times. One of the things I have come to understand through my study of Buddhism is that things are impermanent. Things are always changing even down to the micro level. Hence, where does choice come in. And how often are we making conscious choices. Constant change and choice seem to go hand in hand.

      Hi Katherine,
I’ve had this conversation with friends as well and I hear and understand the point they’re making.
It sounds simplistic but I believe firmly that we *have* choices. And we exercise those choices from before we’re born and those choices are imprinted in our DNA. We even have the choice to be born into the family or situation that we’re born into. We make those choices in order to have the experiences / lessons we want to learn so that we can evolve and continue to evolve into the perfect beings we are to be.
Because we’ve made a choice to have the types of experiences we want to have doesn’t mean others can’t or won’t try to help us along the way — that’s also part of the decisions we made — to bring people into our lives to teach and help us.
We do have free will to orchestrate the kind of life we want.
      Marcia

    great biography!

Oh, and some choices we make don’t have reprecussions until years later! (For good or bad). Free will is wonderful, horrible thing, sometimes, isn’t it?

Making choices can be very overwhlming, as we hope to see good changes come out of the choices, but sometimes don’t ! But, one thing I do know for certain, “Choices” will always be a part of our daily life. Great Post ! 🙂

You are so right that even when we think we are not making a choice, we are! I’ve seen a few posts on this prompt but this is the best!, Thank you!

As I get older, the choices I make are often related to “live for the moment” ones. I can clean the house or food shop some other time.

I strongly believe we always make choices. Even when it appears there are no choices – there is a choice to believe there are no more choices (give up) or to keep searching for a way. Your mind is always free to believe anything it choses to believe. Whether that is in accord with reality does not matter. Unless there is some disability that prevents one from choosing, it is a necessity, the same as breathing.

Some choices made lightly come with life-altering and even life-ending consequences far out of proportion to the choice originally made. I think that last quote about being careful with choices because of consequences is very wise. Even though we cannot anticipate all consequences, all choice comes with a price.

    Brilliant post, Elizabeth. Thank you!

Thanks for your daily words of encouragment, and the challenges to think about our actions.

You never know if the red pill or the blue pill would be enough for you. Sometimes you make the right decision at the moment and you are happy with it, years later when you are changed, you regret you made this decision and want to return the time back but you can not.

It is hardly to say which pill is best! I wish I can choose both that way no regret whatsoever :))

I love to be positive and upbeat. I think we all make choices and decisions based upon what we are going through at that season of our lives. Some are good and some are bad. Thanks for uplifting me as our spirits are connected.

Choices mean change, and I think so many people are afraid of change, actually coming up out of the rabbit hole to see what goes on out there in the world. A different world than you are used to. One change leads to another and another after that, and whether those changes are taking you on a good path leading you forward, or a bad path dragging you backward and down is up to you. Then of course, you have the choice of no choice and you remain frozen in place, not experiencing the richness of life.
