Weekly Photo Challenge: Shades of Red…

What does the color red mean to you? Do you make any associations with specific colors? Which colors do you gravitate to and why? Most people consciously or unconsciously reach for the same family of colors again and again. We choose them because we love the shade, they remind us of certain events or simply because we find them uplifting and cheery. For those who investigate the meaning of colors, red is considered the color of love and aggression; there is something about fiery red that gets some people excited. Even language uses red to connote emotions, types, beliefs and behaviors; seeing red, red states, redcoats and more. I remember friends sharing that if you drive a red car, the chances of being pulled over by a cop is greater… perhaps the brightness draws attention more than anything else. I’ve always loved red so I find stories and emotions attached to it fascinating.

For this week’s Photo Challenge: Red exercise, I found lots of things in red; a surfeit of choices and really had to pare it down and share only the red things that had a little bit more interest factor.  As I was working on this post, I was reminded of how often we put our hearts and soul into a project and yes, the human heart is always shown in red; ditto all the Valentine’s Day paraphernalia.  I also remembered that the American Heart Association runs the Go Red For Women  Red Dress campaign which serves as an important symbol reminding women to fight heart disease by taking care of our hearts… Do get a check up if any pain or discomfort arise. Your life depends on it. I enjoyed this challenge a lot and I hope you like this collection of shades of red today. 🙂

Weekly Photo Challenge: Shades of Red… red door; a pathway to the soul.

When I was a child, red was my favorite color and I would reach for it again and again. I wore red, had red cups, toys, book covers, and when I bought and wore my first shade of lipstick… yes, I reached for red. For years, I loved red dresses because as Bill Blass would say, “When in doubt wear red.” It was always admired and ladies who were daring enough to show up at parties in red got some serious attention… Go figure. Interestingly, I switched to black in later years and now my color preferences have expanded to include lots of other shades… Red still features prominently but not as a daily color I reach for. How about you?  What are your thoughts? What shades of red did you capture this week? What is your favorite color and did you find the exercise, easy or hard? Do share?

Positive Motivation Tip: Colors add another dimension to our lives and give some insight to our personality and mood; Brighten your day with a daring shade of red.

Thank you for stopping by… What a great idea. I might consider it as I do love color and photography… I’m a beginner and seriously thinking of taking a photo class locally. I enjoyed my visit to your blog. 🙂

I like the restaurant photo. I may be able to eat a lot of food there. 🙂

    • 19/05/2011 8:27 am

I like the restaurant too. Where and what is that restaurant!?

    • 20/05/2011 1:39 am

Oh yes you would… The restaurant is called Spice Market at 403 West 13th Street.New York, NY 10014 • Tel: 212.675.2322, and they serve South East Asian cuisine. The decor is Moroccan meets Mediterranean meets Asia fusion. You will enjoy it. 🙂

what a collection–you must have large coffers! I especially like the mood of the first one–the man and dog lazin’ away

    • 20/05/2011 1:43 am

When I win the Lottery, I will! LOL! 🙂 I like the first photo too as it has a certain mystery/mood to it. I enjoyed the process and eliminated several because I already had a lot up there. One day, I will find the one picture that says it all and then post just one shot. 🙂

I’m actually not a big fan of red as a colour. I have very few red clothes, for example, and none of my decor is red.

    Love the photos though!

As to what colour am I drawn to………. I think certain shades of green. Yellow in some situations. Magenta is my favourite colour.

    • 20/05/2011 1:46 am

Okay… I can understand that. I have friends who won’t touch the color with a six foot pole. I used to feel the same way about pink because it never looked good on me, but I love the full spectrum of colors and wear a lot of them. I still have favs in the red, brick, bronze, white and black family of colors. I like Magenta too 🙂

Really enjoyed this post & photos! Enjoyed the article on the meaning of color, too.. Just had a pedicure last night. I chose a wonderful shade of red with a delicious sheen and an even more delicious name: Pants on Fire.

    • 20/05/2011 1:47 am

Pants On Fire… that is hysterical. Is it one of those OPI colors? They have the best and most outrageous names for their nail polish. Love it! 🙂

I love this quote and I’m going to post it somewhere today. I also love color, though I like color very strategically placed in my home. I like looking at red farm houses, firetrucks, hydrants, phonebooths, vintage signage. I like all the various shades of red, and I love orange.

    • 20/05/2011 1:49 am

Isn’t it a great quote? I’m a big fan of color and red is up there for me… I know you love red; look at your fabulous hat! That hat rocks. 🙂

Red definitely speaks loudly!! I have always loved red for fashion and for editing purposes. In trial, I usually wear red when cross-examining the defendant – psychologically, it is advantageous to me. 😉

One thing I cannot do is sign anyone’s name in red- there is an old superstition in my family about doing that which does not bode well for the person whose name ends up in that color…

Your pictures are phenomenal as usual, Eliz! My favorite is the flower.

    • 20/05/2011 1:52 am

Sure does scream at one with all its sizzle! 🙂 I’ve read things about color but don’t recall the superstition bit; fascinating! I’m glad you liked the hibiscus as it was part of the plant life in an indoor aquarium at the Bronx Zoo. 🙂
      Thank you!

Terrific set of photograps. I love the first one as it has so much of a story and the red pulls you in. The restaurant is amazing looking; do tell?
Love is a strong color and not for wallflowers. 🙂

Thank you… this was fun and the red gets me upbeat! I don’t think my camera did the restaurant red room justice as the shots were fuzzy and I kept re-taking the shots. Phew! I no longer use that camera as it was inconsistent. The room is huge and stunning with private banquets tucked away in the corner… 8)

    Wonderful post, E!
I love your eye for interesting photos and splashes of brilliant color!

The window frames, the red door, and the red telephone booths just drew me in.

    • 20/05/2011 1:58 am

TY Nancy, I love those too… The red door to the church photo is part of a planned post on that church… I’m still working on it. 🙂

Beautiful photos-red is one of my favorite colors, but not my favorite. I like greens, being an outdoor person, I like all the greenery. It’s a color that brings the outside indoors. Excellent post, and most creative.

    • 20/05/2011 2:00 am

Yes, red is one of mine too… TY for your feedback. How come you don’t try out the Photo Challenge? I know you’d be great at it; plus its fun. 🙂

A beautiful meditation on the color red, Elizabeth!
I love, love, love all the photos you were able to find. Beautiful and eye catching.

Thank you Marcia, I had a lot of fun putting them together… I liked your jigsaw puzzle man too. 🙂

The red room reminds me of the old Russian Tea Room in Manhattan. I loved it there.
My wardrobe has evolved into black, white and red primarily. Although as the weather gets warmer I’m drawn to blues and aquas.
    Nice photos!!

    • 21/05/2011 1:11 am

Oh yeah, I remember the Russian Tea Room and then it closed down for a while and later was reopened by another outfit.
I wear dark colors more in the winter and add brights in the warm weather but I do still love red. 🙂

  16. 22/05/2011 2:18 pm

Very nice selection of red pictures! I love that first one, with the red window shutters!!
