If you’ve ever had to do major renovations on your home; especially a home you purchased that needed both obvious and not so obvious work, you’ll empathize with this week’s featured blogger – Donna Huebsch. Donna’s blog Huebsch House Chronicles is an ongoing account of the challenges and successes she and hubby, Jim, experience as they renovate their new home and deal with endless tasks and surprises – from roof repair to insurance matters and more. Their effort is truly a DIY (Do it yourself) labor of love as the indefatigable Jim, assisted by his equally tireless wife, Donna, tear down, fix, correct and celebrate the progress of their work. Through it all, my good blog friend/buddy, Donna, manages to smile and be grateful for the good things that happen around her.

When she comes up for air, Donna is mom to K, their 15 year old home-schooled daughter, and runs her Etsy Shop Cell Chic where she sells cellphone charms and other pretty jewelry pieces she makes. Family pets, Sheba the cat, Molly the dog, all the other dogs and critters, keep the household entertained with their love and antics. As Donna is incredibly busy with her house renovation project, I skipped the extra questions; she needs some downtime. Please join me and welcome this week’s Featured “Get To Know” Blogger, Donna of Huebsch House Chronicles. Do leave her a comment here, and then stop by her blog to say hello! 🙂

Where did you grow up and why do you blog?
I spent the first 28 years of my life in Mississippi, then lived in Atlanta for 5 years, and Florida for the last 22+ years – I’m definitely a southern girl. I tell people I have a mixed marriage – I grew up in Mississippi and my husband grew up in Buffalo, NY… I’ve converted him, though. He now likes cornbread stuffing with his turkey and loves to go fishing.
My current blog is an online diary of the process of renovating the house we just moved into in February of this year. It was a foreclosure, and while basically it was in good shape, it needs updating. The old owners stripped out a lot of the furnishings; like interior doors, light fixtures, kitchen appliances, and even a bathroom sink! We are real DIYers (Do-It-Yourselvers), but this is definitely the biggest project we’ve ever tackled. My blog lets me share this process with my friends, family and anyone else who’s interested, and I only have to say things once. 😉

What is most important to you/about you?
The most important thing on this earth to me is my family. I feel so blessed to have my husband and daughter to share my life with. I can’t imagine what my life would have been like without them. We’re also big animal lovers at our house – we had lots of animals when I was growing up, so life just doesn’t seem complete without an assortment of critters in the house. Right now, we have a yellow lab, a Pekingese, a Chihuahua (whose ears never stood up), a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, a tabby cat, an Abyssinian guinea pig and a Roborovksi hamster.
I also love being creative and have explored so many creative outlets during my life; music, pottery, needlework, decorative painting, beading, carved rugs and much more. When my nieces and nephew were younger, my family used to have “craft weekends” – we would meet at someone’s house, armed with craft supplies and lots of good food and spend the entire weekend crafting to our heart’s content.

What motivates you to get out of bed?
Usually a full bladder – sorry, but it’s true! 😮 I am not a morning person and could probably happily sleep ‘til noon each day. But fortunately, I don’t – there are a lot of interesting things to do each day – crafting, home renovating, home schooling – so getting up to go to the bathroom forces me to get my achy joints moving!

How would you like to be remembered?
If and when someone thinks of me after I’m gone, I’d like to be remembered as a kind person; someone who was fair and honest, and as someone who tried to leave the world a little bit of a better place for my being here.

Donna is currently engrossed in completing the renovation project that she and Jim started in February. She does find time to do a few other things with daughter, K, the family pets, Sheba, Molly and the rest, her blog, crafting, and her Etsy shop – Cell Chic. Her blog is both informative and entertaining, and I encourage you to visit and get to know her. You may connect with Donna through her blog – Huebsch House Chronicles, via her Etsy shop – Cell Chic, and through her Twitter handle – @donnahuebsch Welcome our blog buddy and friend – Donna Huebsch.

Thanks, Eliz, for introducing us to yet another lovely blogger.
Hi Donna…I take my hat off to you for all that you do…renovating a house is a major job and can be quite unsettling…but it sounds like you are able to take it in stride. I’ll be hopping over to visit your blog and watch the progress. 🙂

Thanks, Vivian – DIYing is definitely a way of life for us and we do enjoy it.

  2. 13/05/2011 12:14 am

  3. 13/05/2011 3:43 am

it is wise to focus on a comfy home. Sheba the cat and Molly the dog for sure will agree …

    • 13/05/2011 9:50 am

Too bad I didn’t have an audio clip to go with that picture – you could have heard Molly contentedly snoring. 😮

Nice meeting you, Donna. Good luck with your big project!
What a great feature, Eliz! It’s great to get to know a little bit more about our fellow bloggers!

HA,HA,HA……”A full bladder”. That’s funny and true! Nice to meet you Donna. Cute pets. Another fantastic interview. Thanks Elizabeth!

Wow, another interesting blogger! I’ll pop over to Donna’s blog and have a look… Donna, I love that part of the reason you blog is so you only have to say things once!!

    • 13/05/2011 1:52 pm

Thanks for the visit! Considering that my two sisters, my dad, many relatives and long-time friends live far away, I do like having to put something only once in my blog; then everyone can see what we’ve been up to!

What a great lady! Renovations can bring out the devil in anyone; I empathize.
Donna is also very creative. Nice to meet her. 🙂

Thanks, Bree – yes, renovations are teaching me lessons in patience and perseverance 😮

  8. 13/05/2011 3:10 pm

Glad that the house is coming along, Donna!

Either your dog, Molly, is enormous, or your tabby, Sheba, is tiny . . . in comparison to our tabby Tigger. 😀

    • 13/05/2011 6:21 pm

This was a picture right after we adopted her, so she was a kitten – and Molly was very generous to share her bed with her. However, Sheba IS actually pretty tiny – the rescue group had named her “Minnie Me” because she was so small.

My husband and I know a lot about DIY. Our house was built in the mid 1700’s and believe me, it’s always something around there!

    Thanks for the intro Eliz!

      WOW – mid 1700’s! That’s amazing – ours is mid-1980’s and it’s always something 😮

  10. 13/05/2011 6:20 pm

Glad to meet you Donna, your house is going great with the renovations. I’m anxious to see the completion. Welcome !! Very nice interview on you, and I loved it when you said what makes you get up in the mornings- you said “Full Bladder”-thats a good one but so true. 🙂

  11. 13/05/2011 6:23 pm

“Full Bladder” isn’t profound, but hey, just keeping it real 😮

  12. 13/05/2011 7:52 pm

Hi Donna! I’ve done the renovating thing – I hope to never do it again! Love the phone charm above. Not that I have ever owned one, (a charm that is, I’ve had plenty of phones) but I do like the look of them.

    Eliz, another lovely introduction!

    • 13/05/2011 11:20 pm

We’ve done lots of DIY projects over the years, but this is the first time we’ve ever had a house which needs something done in EVERY room – by the time we’re done, I may never want to do a renovation again either!

  13. 14/05/2011 7:05 pm

Thanks for sharing about Donna, and how talented to make cell phone jewelery. I admire her and her creativity on Etsy.

  14. 14/05/2011 7:47 pm

Every one you featured bloggers is special, Elizabeth!
Donna – you are everything I wish I was – a talented artist with your cell phone charms and good at renovations. I cannot believe that you fit in homeschooling a 15 year old girl on top of all that. I will have to go back and check out some recipes since Southern cooking is some of my favorite!

    • 15/05/2011 9:40 pm

I’m not sure my recipes would qualify as typical Southern cooking – they’re more like comfort food, though, so that’s always a good thing 😮

  15. 17/05/2011 9:25 pm

Nice to meet you, Donna! Good luck on the renovation! 🙂 And oh my, that jewelry box is exquisite!

  16. 20/05/2011 8:48 pm

Another great interview Elizabeth, thanks for introducing Donna – she is one busy lady and I love that her house if full of critters – she sounds like my kind of person!
