I have always been fascinated by animals and how they live in their own habitat… I love the photos and adventures inNational Geographic as it has always been one of my favorite websites/TV shows. So, when saw the prompt for our Photo Challenge on Wildlife, I was thrilled. I had a lot of fun culling photos for this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge on Wildlife and the bigger challenge was deciding what to leave out. I had a series of highly entertaining shots from the Gorilla quarters and would probably do a post sometime on their shots alone. I enjoyed watching the Nyalas and the Mountain goats, the lions and the zebras and all the other animals in between…

The lions were lazily enjoying the warm sun, and the elegant giraffe and zebras posed as if I were a paparazzi gathering shots for a lifestyle magazine. In case you are wondering, I took a trip to the Bronx Zoo in New York and spent time visiting the wildlife; they were equally curious about the human eyes staring at them. Somehow, we were all waiting for each other to make the next move… Staring and waiting, gazing and wondering. What were your experiences with your wildlife moments and shots? Enjoy the selection. 🙂

At the end of the day, I felt I had learned as much about myself as I learned about these animals in their prefab habitat in the city. They seemed content or, at least, I hoped so… Imagine the fierce competition for survival in the wild? Yet, I wondered if they missed the wild or if their memories were long erased by the loving care of the staffers who feed them daily… Everyone and everything deserves a bit of love… Stop by later as I have a few more to share. Some fantastic and beautiful photos there Elizabeth, thanks for sharing them with us so we can see the beauty of nature and wildlife. We all need each other to survive, that’s why I’m passionate about pets (or any animal)!

Zoos that simulate the natural environment for animals (as shown in your photos) are valuable educational tools to teach children about the splendid diversity on this amazing planet.
Zoos with barren cages and concrete floors should be outlawed.

I used to love going to zoos until I watched a lion. He had a pretty expansive space to roam but when he came to the invisible fence, I saw what I interpreted to be a sense of sadness in his eyes. It made me feel sad and I wondered if he missed being able to go where he wanted as he wanted, to be able to hunt. I couldn’t go back after that.
It was great to see animals in the wild. We came close to seeing a kill but I’m glad we didn’t as I wouldn’t have been able to watch. I can’t even watch on television.
These animals look well cared for, content and beautiful. And the best thing: they’re there for everyone to see.
I can imagine how difficult it was to choose which photos to include. I had to leave out quite a lot.

I know this sounds crazy, but the wild horses are my favorite! Well, them and the baby squirrel monkey! Great photos Eliz!!
The wild horses and the lions are my favorite. The least favored is the cobra-do not like snakes !! Beautiful photos ! always enjoyed going to the zoo with the children-I find it fasinating the way mother’s tend to their young-its the ‘mother’s instinct” in all of us moms to care for our young !
I feel sad for the poor animals, just passing by their time in the zoo. I am not sure what is good for them being in fear and free in the wild or being in the zoo.

These photos are phenomenal! The animals are so close and beautiful. I love the gorilla shots – they are gorgeous and who doesn’t love a giraffe! Looks like it was a beautiful day for this. Wish I’d been there – but this is almost as if I was! 🙂
Wonderful photos – Papa Lion is my favourite! Although I did like the polar bear too – he looks very relaxed.
I could happily live anywhere but the city.

What a great collection of animal photos. Couldn’t you just sit and watch the gorillas all day? They do fascinate me.
Those animals are gorgeous! Animals fascinate me, although I must admit that almost all of them intimidate me (yes, even domesticated pets intimidate me). My most recent visit to the zoo was back in December. I almost had my picture taken with a snake wrapped around me, but I chickened out at the last minute. I’m thinking it’s time for another trip to the zoo, or maybe a safari.
I’ve never seen a squirrel monkey before. The baby in your picture is adorable!
