Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One…

27/04/2011

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One... Joan of Arc

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One… Bust of MLK, Jr at capital rotunda corridor (joins both houses)

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One… Albert Einstein

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One… Lenin

For this week’s Photo Challenge on the subject of One, I decided to include a wide range of single item shots; starting with human sculptures of Joan of Arc, Martin Luther King, Jr, Einstein, and Lenin  that I photographed in the last few months. These were randomly selected from what I have on file as they fit the theme of ONE and are historic figures. I then added flowers, animals, and other forms to the mix for variation. Do come back and see the rest if I don’t upload all before the hour concludes… (Updated) 🙂

The number one is significant as it represents the first, the beginning, the central number/figure in all things. For those of us who have religious/spiritual beliefs, we look to the one and only Creator who is known by many names. For athletes, winning means being number one. The same applies in other arenas; academics, creative endeavors, contests, the Oscars, research results and so on. One is a central number and we can look at our planet earth and recognize that, while there are other planets around us, we remain the one and only planet -earth.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One… One daisy cow

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One… One swan

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One… an installation; one blackbird with owls

In this series, I have featured animals/birds as the reference point for the subject of one. The cow and swan were photographed in Cambridge, England. The blackbird and owl installation was taken in Portland, Oregon on a recent visit there. I was very impressed by the installation as it was a fairly large piece with owls flying in for their congregation with the black bird. Since it was behind a Plexiglas frame and the sun was setting, the show was partially framed in the sun. I hope you can make sense of the part I captured.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One… one waterlily

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One… one magnolia flower

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One… one daffodil

The flowers were fun to shoot and I think I was able to capture some of the wonderful colors and foliage. The waterlily shoot was one I took in Kyoto, Japan at a temple. The magnolia flower and daffodil came from my garden… I realized that I had not added the magnolia to my spring flora post; so here is a glimpse.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One… one market clock

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One… one piece of outdoor sculpture

Weekly Photo Challenge: Power of One… one giant blown up city rat

The rest are miscellaneous shots of a clock at the Chelsea Market, a sculpture from the campus grounds of Reed College, and one of my old favorites; that giant rat I photographed in Manhattan… Okay, it is not real but it depicts the rat race lifestyle many are living and possibly all those nasty subway track rats… not the human kind! 🙂 Hope you enjoyed the journey… As always, I love the photo challenges… and I bet you do too.
What one thing did your camera capture? Did you have an easy or hard time selecting photos? What are your thoughts? Do share? 🙂

The power of one is a great thing to remember when you are reluctant to take that first step because you feel that you will not make a difference.

True… and I like the idea of being brave and taking a chance… as they say, it takes ONE. 🙂

      Thank you Barb,
Of course one of these days, I will find the one prefect picture that answers a photo prompt and stick with that ONE.
      LOL! 🙂

for sure http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_of_Arc is a powerful example of the courage of a ONE and only bold person, who is needed, to change a society. H0w’s about Martin Luther King? Do you know Josh White? Mrs. Roosevelt traveled with him to Europe. Since them I adore his message – and play his songs …

Absolutely, there are many, many people one could add but I chose from the pictures in my files and what I used is what I have… 🙂
Now that you mentioned MLK, I will go look at my photos from my trip for the AFSP Training: (Advocacy for Suicide Prevention) and our visit to Congress. I might have a shot of a bust of him in the Senate or the house of Reps. Hmmm, Thanks Frizz, let me look and if I find it, I will post it.
      🙂

My Nanny is sore but otherwise, doing well and my mom is doing a lot better….she will be at the hospital for another week in rehab until she can get around good since she has a brace on, but she told me she’s not really in pain anymore, just a little sore
        Thanks for asking!

    Thank you for track back.
I like “one market clock” photo because I remembered the past time.
This clock is similar to Japanese old clock.

  13. 29/04/2011 8:39 am

Awesome pictures. Loved the picture of the giant city rat and the blackbird with the owls.

  14. 29/04/2011 11:26 pm

The photos are art. They are just simply beautiful. I love the flowers but I’m left with a million questions about the owls and the blackbird…

  15. 30/04/2011 4:53 am

They’re all gorgeous pictures! My favorite is the one of the blackbird with the owls.
